A. Just today I worked with a 6 ½ year old Labrador who practiced pulling on the leash for that length of time. For the first few minutes he completely ignored me and pulled, as that was his habit.

In response, I stopped walking and waited for him to pay attention to me. When he did I celebrated with a training cue (Touch) and got him back beside me in the “reward zone” so we could resume walking. A few minutes later he and I were walking as a team, side by side, with constant communication between us. To accomplish this I teach fundamental skills: Look, Touch, Sit, Reverse Sit. Look means make eye contact with me, Touch means put your wet doggy nose to the palm of my hand, Sit means when I stop walking your job is to put your butt on the ground, and Reverse Sit means if I back up several steps your job is to approach me and Sit, without a prompt. Then I added right and left turns so we can change directions in unison. The entire process took 30 minutes.
