This study compared the costs associated with physical therapy following a Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) provided by a physical therapist or through a virtual assistant. The study reported a cost savings per patient and stated “the use of VERA was as effective as traditional PT”. I have many concerns about this virtual exercise program during a critical period following a TKA. It is imperative that inflammation and pain are reduced, joint flexibility and motion are restored, and strength improves to allow for functional mobility. This process needs to occur in a specific time frame so that adhesions aren’t formed Susan Armstrong, MPT that will physically restrict the joint’s range of motion, which can actually require additional intervention (and costs) from the surgeon. Some clients need more encouragement and hands-on care, while others need cues Physical Therapist to “slow down.” Modalities, kinesiotape, lymphatic drainage, manual techniques and scar mobilization need in-person care and instructions. Orthopedic surgeons will provide a list of exercises for patients to complete, yet also refer clients to PTs for the hands-on rehab process and rely on the skills of the PT to adapt the program as necessary. One should proceed with caution when relying solely on a virtual assistant for recovery from a significant surgery. Depression (major depressive disorder or clinical depression) is, by definition, a medical illness characterized by a chronic sense of sadness and loss of interest in activities. Depression can often dictate the way in which you feel, think, and act – and if not treated, it can lead to everything from alcohol and drug abuse to attempted suicide. It’s estimated that 350 million people worldwide suffer from depression. More than two million adults 65 years of age and older are faced with depression of some kind. Signs of depression are easy to overlook in older adults, as they’re often mistaken for other signs of aging. Studies show that when depressed, seniors may not clearly display typical signs of sadness such as crying. Instead, they tend to withdraw from the people they care about and the things they once loved to do. Signs to watch for: Irritability, withdraw, decrease in cognitive ability, increased pain and digestive problems. If you recognize any of these signs in your senior loved one, talk to him or her about what he or she is feeling. Although you may receive some resistance initially, it’s important to let him or her know that you’re there to help. From there, it’s vital that you inform his or her primary health care provider or mental health expert to have symptoms assessed professionally.
