Public Works • Parks Maintenance Seasonal Parks Maintenance Seasonal Worker – Are you seeking employment? Do you enjoy working outdoors? If this sounds like you, then we encourage you to keep reading! The City of Stoughton Public Works Department is looking for a part time limited term seasonal employee who will complement its already strong and outstanding team of professionals. Under the direction of the Parks Maintenance Supervisor, the Parks Seasonal Laborer performs functions necessary for the maintenance of the City’s parks, greenways, park rows, road right of ways, building, grounds, and park facilities. Daily work plans are discussed with daily review of progress. There is frequent interaction with the public and other parks/public works staff. This is a position with variable hours during the non-peak season. During peak Season (May-October) the position is 40 hours per week. Work hours are generally Monday - Thursday from 6:30 am until 3: 30 pm and Friday from 6:30 am until 10:30 am. During the off peak season, work hours and schedule will vary based on weather conditions and some weekend responsibilities. Must be 18 years old with High School diploma or equivalent. Must also possess valid operator’s license. Experience operating lawn mowers, string line trimmers, and other similar equipment is desired.

Q. What do I need to do to take care of my toddler’s teeth? A. Generally, a child gains their first baby tooth around 6 months of age and continues to get new teeth until around 30 months. Once a tooth is visible in the mouth, daily hygiene by a parent is necessary. All teeth are susceptible to decay and disease, even baby teeth. The two greatest risk factors are a sugary or high carb diet and lack of daily brushing. Infant’s teeth can be cleaned daily by using a wet wash-cloth or “thimble brush” to gently wipe off plaque. By age 2, a toddler-sized soft bristle toothbrush should be used with a thin smear of fluoride toothpaste. By age 5, use just a rice-sized amount of paste on the brush and always Dr. James Sands, DDS encourage your child to spit out all paste after brushing. Remember that children cannot reliably brush teeth themselves until 6-8 years of age and even then need to be closely supervised. Parents should plan on doing follow up brushing until age 7-8. Children are notorious for believing that tasting toothpaste is just as good as brushing. The most commonly missed spot in the mouth for brushing is along the gum line. Every child should see the dentist by age 1 for an exam and decay risk assessment. This is a recent recommendation due to increased decay in children under 5. Inquire if your dentist is comfortable seeing young children. Children are fun and unique and should be treated that way. Good Luck!
Q. How important is it to warm up before beginning an exercise program? A.The warm-up portion of an exercise routine, which typically occurs within the first 5-10
minutes of activity, is more important than one may realize. A typical warm-up routine may include general upper and lower extremity stretching with large movement patterns and deep breathing, as well as a simpler form of the exercise you will begin (i.e. walking with large strides and long arm swings before jogging). Benefits of a warming up include: reduced risk of injury, increased blood flow, increased neuromuscular synaptic activity, improved viscosity of the synovial fluid of the joint lining, and initiating the aerobic portion of exercise. Aerobic exercise (use of the body’s oxygen supply for building endurance and cardiovascular response), as well as anaerobic exercise Susan Armstrong, MPT (use of energy stores within the body for strength training and increasing muscular tone), are both Physical Therapist required to provide a balanced fitness program. First be sure that the thermostat is in the heat position and the temperature is set above the indoor temperature. Next, check for power at the furnace by turning the fan switch (on the thermostat) to the on position. If the furnace blower does not turn on, check the circuit breaker for the furnace and the switch at the furnace, to ensure they are on. Also check the air filter to ensure it is clean. If you have LP gas or oil heat, ensure that you have sufficient fuel. Some LP gas furnaces have pressure switches that will not allow the furnace to run if the tank is low on fuel. Even though the water heater sitting right next to the furnace lights and runs, the pressure may be too low to allow the furnace to light. If you have a high efficiency gas furnace with pvc vent pipes, be sure that the piping is clear of obstructions such as snow, birds or rodent nests. Q. How can I spot depression in elders? A. We all have days in which we are sad or have thoughts of hopelessness – but for many, it goes beyond

that. Depression (major depressive disorder or clinical depression) is, by definition, a medical illness characterized by a chronic sense of sadness and loss of interest in activities. Depression can often dictate the way in which you feel, think, and act – and if not treated, it can lead to everything from alcohol and drug abuse to attempted suicide. It’s estimated that 350 million people worldwide suffer from depression. More than two million adults 65 years of age and older are faced with depression of some kind. Signs of depression are easy to overlook in older adults, as they’re often mistaken for other signs of aging. Studies show that when depressed, seniors may not clearly display typical signs of sadness such as crying. Instead, they tend to withdraw from the people they care about and the things they once loved to do. Signs to watch for: Irritability, withdraw, decrease in cognitive ability, increased pain and digestive problems. If you recognize any of these signs in your senior loved one, talk to him or her about what he or she is feeling. Although you may receive some resistance initially, it’s important to let him or her know that you’re there to help. From there, it’s vital that you inform his or her primary health care provider or mental health expert to have symptoms assessed professionally.

You might be thinking, I could rent a similar house for $1800-$1,900 per month and not have the maintenance, so I’m saving money. I think it’s clear, if you are in it for the long haul, no matter what part of the market cycle you buy in, you’ll be better off in the end as a homeowner rather than a renter.

Q. What should I keep in mind when trying to purchase a business? A. There is a lot that goes into purchasing a business. The first thing you should do is learn the profitability of that business to see if it is something that will support your investment, as your goal is to invest into something that will give you a long-term return. Then ask yourself, “Am I able to assume the seller’s lease?”. If you are not able to assume the lease, financing the building would need to be considered. The issue we always run into with business purchases is lack of collateral. It’s good for the client to have funds saved for the purchase or look to seller financing. There is quite a bit of important information that will need to be gathered in which I can help guide you in the right direction.
