Q. With Winter being just around the corner, how important is it to continue using monthly preventatives on my pets? A. As anyone in Wisconsin knows, the weather is fickle and does whatever it wants to, seemingly at random. And therein lies the problem.

THIS IS FALSE. These are small but hardy creatures, and all three have strategies for surviving the cold—which can include overwintering in your cozy, humidity-controlled home. Any increase in temperature, especially the unseasonal ones (e.g. extended warmth through fall, an early thaw in spring), may cue the critters to begin their reproductive life cycles and the feast upon your pets. By preventing this feeding activity, we prevent the transmission of the disease-causing agents the parasites may carry. Be vigilant in monitoring your pets for fleas, ticks, and mosquitos and remember that any you DO see represents a much smaller number than the ones you DON’T. An annual supply of flea/tick and heartworm preventatives provide another tool to help maintain and protect the overall health of your fuzzy family members, and there are often monetary incentives to buy them in bulk.
