A. As any feline fancier can tell you, cats are regal, majestic, and they play by their own rules. In a multiple
cat household, all bets are off as it relates to them demonstrating acceptable, owner-preferred behaviors. Cats by nature are solitary creatures and prefer their own stable, relaxing territory. Though it may appear that all are friends, especially after cohabitating for years, your cats might be feeling stressed out and are acting accordingly. Common stress behaviors include scratching furniture, fighting, hiding, or having accidents outside of their litter boxes. Fortunately, there are many possible solutions. Cats love to scratch things, rather than eliminate this behavior try redirecting it to a personal (one per cat), sturdy scratching post. Pay attention to their scratching patterns, if they scratch horizontal surfaces, they may require a flat scratching solution. Territoriality can extend to paths taken within a home. It may be that one cat is blocking access to the litter box because it’s in “his space.” Providing multiple litter boxes throughout the house (at least one per cat, with one extra) may make everyone more comfortable. A third alternative would be trying pheromone products. Some brands have multiple formulations that may help calm a stressed kitty, can encourage friendly cohabitation, or can even suggest acceptable scratching locations. If problems persist, schedule an appointment with your local veterinarian to help bring these problems to a swift resolution.
