As urban life has continued to integrate with natural wild habitats it is important to be aware of what to do when you find a seemingly orphaned wild animal. Common baby animals to find are rabbits, squirrels, both nestling and pledging songbirds, and waterfowl. Here are some general tips if you happen across an orphan. In most cases an orphaned baby can be returned to its nest or near by where the mother will find it. It is important to make sure the baby is healthy before returning it to the nest. A mother will not abandon its offspring if it is healthy and uninjured and contrary to a popular old wife’s tail, a mother will not abandon its offspring if it is handled by a human. Though you should still try to handle the baby as minimally as possible. Do not try to feed or give water to the baby as they have very Ayla Feehery, CVT specific needs that only the mother can provide. Rabbit nests will be a shallow depression in the ground often found in the yard, near bushes, or along the side of a building. Squirrels and birds’ nest in trees, their offspring will often be found on the ground under the tree the nest is in. Squirrels should be placed in a small box with a fleece and nesting material at the bottom of its tree as the mother will pick it up and return It herself.
