Q. My dog jumps on people during greetings. What should I do?
Q. What are the most common dangers to my pets around the holidays? A. Around the holidays, there are many extra dangers for our furry family members of which
we need to be aware. Extra electrical cords can be bitten through leading to electrocution. Decorations such as ornaments can be ingested and potentially lead to intestinal damage or obstruction. Lots of baking goods around can lead to ingestions of toxins such as chocolate and xylitol, an artificial sweetener that is toxic to animals. Even a lot of “fatty” special treats can lead to pancreatitis for some animals. Holiday plants such as poinsettia, mistletoe and pine can cause gastrointestinal upset or at high doses toxicity. Certain salts used for de-icing can cause skin irritation and gastrointestinal irritation or toxicity if ingested. Keep these items away from your pets and call a veterinarian if your pet does get exposed.

A. This behavior often begins with puppies who are small, cute and friendly. They jump on the legs of people they meet, pawing at them joyfully. Who can resist that? Visitors reinforce the behavior with their attention. Behaviors which are reinforced will repeat. By the time the dog is larger the behavior may no longer be appreciated but it has become habitual. Punishment is unlikely to work because scolding and pushing a dog off is still reinforcing with attention. If it worked you would not have to keep doing it, right? Some dogs acclimate to punishment and consider it the cost of getting attention. Others may consider it a form of play. We often overlook polite behavior and inadvertently reinforce impolite behavior. I suggest teaching simple things like Touch, Sit, Down and other behaviors that contradict jumping and pawing. Then set up greeting practice so the dog gets plenty of opportunities to meet a person and offer behaviors. Generously reward the dog for any behaviors which do not involve jumping and pawing. Teach the dog that four paws on the ground earns the social interaction he craves.
