The outpouring of love and support has been unbelievable since the unexpected loss of Thomas Hess on March 24, 2020. We were unable to hold the traditional mass and burial at that time due to the Covid pandemic. On March 27, 2021 a Celebration of Life was held and just recently on July 17, 2021 at a Hess Reunion that took place where Tom’s siblings (many who traveled from out of state) were able to attend to reminisce.

How to help students improve their focus on their studies.
The struggles students can have with focusing on their studies was apparent during the pandemic. A 2020 survey of more than 400 college students found that 64 percent were concerned about their ability to maintain their focus and discipline in remote instructional environments. Though educators, students and parents are hopeful that remote learning will soon be a thing of the past, no one is certain about what lies
ahead in regard to the 2021-22 school year. Ideally, students will be back in school time full-time five days per week by the start of the new academic year. However, there's no guarantee that will be the case, and students may need help focusing on their studies. • Emphasize one activity at a time. Various studies have shown that multitasking adversely affects performance and makes it hard to concentrate. A recent study from researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology found that performing two or three activities simultaneously puts significantly more demand on the brain than simply doing those tasks one after another.
All students, and especially those who are struggling with focus, should be encouraged to take on one task at a time. • Take breaks. The Cleveland Clinic notes that various studies have found that periodic breaks improve mood, boost performance and increase a person's ability to concentrate and pay attention. Many students are well acquainted with lengthy cramming sessions on the eve of a big exam, which can feel like a rite of passage for high schoolers and college students. Parents and educators can emphasize the importance of taking breaks during such sessions and how periodic rest can help improve performance

Unified Therapy Expands to Fennimore Unified Therapy Services is an outpatient pediatric and adult therapy clinic offering Physical, Occupational, Speech-Language, and Behavioral Therapy. Our dedicated team of therapists believe in a collaborative approach to assist children, adolescents, and adults in achieving functional goals. They treat a variety of diagnoses from developmental delays to serious neurological disorders. In August 2020 Unified Therapy Services entered a partnership with Aiming for Acceptance to expand services to the Southwest Wisconsin community. This new location is located at 615 Roosevelt Street in Fennimore, WI and offers the following pediatric services: • Speech Therapy • Feeding Therapy • Occupational Therapy
Speech Therapy
Therapists will embrace a child’s interests while working their specific areas of need. Staff can support in the areas of processing and understanding information, using words to communicate and/or turning words into phrases and sentences, stuttering, articulating certain sounds, age-appropriate social skills, following directions, early literacy skills, and so much more based on their specific needs.
Feeding Therapy
Feeding therapy is utilized when a child has difficulty with trying new foods, eating foods in each of the food groups (fruits, veggies, proteins, etc), holding food or liquid in their mouth, chewing

Occupational Therapy

The therapists at Unified Therapy will help your child meet their unique needs by creating and implementing an individualized program to help them achieve their highest levels of independence. We also incorporate
your child’s primary motivators like creativity and play to keep therapy motivating and fun.
Is your child on track? To provide support to our community and help make sure a child is on track, we offer free developmental screenings. During this screening therapists assess a child’s fine and gross motor skills, sensory responses, speech patterns, and behavioral tendencies to see if therapy is recommended or if they are developing at a typical pace. Early intervention is key, if developmental delays are caught at an early age progress tends to be seen much more quickly. Our clinics uses a medical model approach to therapy, which focuses on the impairment regardless of severity level to ensure that the child can successfully perform the basic activities of daily living (i.e., putting on their clothes, feeding themselves, speaking clearly their wants and needs, walking) in every environment they may be in. These models can overlap in some areas; however, Unified’s therapists will communicate with the school therapists to ensure that target areas will not be duplicated and that all are supporting each other and the child. Its always been a part of my daily life. I saw how much happiness it brought my family members and wanted the same happiness. I had great teachers along the way who encouraged me. YF: Where did you earn your degree(s)? Megan: University of WisconsinPlatteville YF: What led you to a career in education? Megan: As I grew up, I wanted to help other people and debated becoming a teacher or a nurse. I tried out nursing for a short time and in the end, found that teaching was where I wanted to be. YF: What led you to obtain dual degrees?
Megan: I work with students who sometimes have health concerns along with their learning concerns. I wanted to provide the best care possible for all students and didnt have a lot of knowledge when it came to their health. By getting my CNA, I am now able to care for my students with more knowledge and can help plan their programming and support with more experience. Additionally, many of my students have an assumption that because they struggle with certain aspects of learning, that they cannot go on to obtain jobs that require additional education past high school. My students are some of the most caring, kind, empathetic people I knowthe perfect candidates for a human services career such as becoming a nursing assistant. I decided that I would get my CNA so I can break down the concepts and requirements in the CNA program. I am now able to pre-teach skills, break down concepts into smaller steps, and helps students study for the CNA tests. YF: What was the most challenging aspect of teaching last year? Megan: A lot of what I do relies on observation and body language of my students. Many students dont like to ask for help when they need it, but I am able

to see when they start to struggle by the look on their face or the way they are sitting in their chair. It was a whole new set of skills to learn facial expressions while wearing masks or body language when they are on a computer screen, but we made it work. It forced us all to communicate more clearly about what they needed and how I could help. I am so grateful for the technology that kept us all safe and able to continue learning and growing together. YF: If there is anything else you would like to share with our readers?
Megan: If you are on the fence about trying something new, especially if it will help others, take the leap and do it. You never know who you will be inspiring or who you will be able to help. It was scary and overwhelming for me to commit to the CNA program while raising three kids and finishing my Masters Degree at the same time, but I knew it would make me a better person. I also knew that the knowledge I obtained will help countless students in the future. We as human beings are capable of so many amazing thingsuse your skills for good.

Chancellor Dennis J. Shields announced that the University of Wisconsin-Platteville is welcoming students, faculty and staff back in full face-to-face capacities, on all three campuses, for the 2021-22 academic year.
I am excited for this upcoming academic year and the traditional college experience that our students will be returning to or experiencing for the first time, said Chancellor Shields. It is because of the willingness of our students, faculty and staff on all three campuses to adapt to

changes last year and respect their peers and greater communities that we are now in a position to re-open fully face-to-face. Classes will overwhelmingly return to a traditional university format, with more than 90% scheduled to operate in-person a larger percentage than prepandemic. University facilities staff is preparing UW-Plattevilles three campuses for the return of students by removing physical barriers, returning furniture to classrooms and restoring recreation and dining spaces to their full capacity. Pioneer athletics will welcome back fans, at full capacity, to home events this fall. Homecoming 2021 is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 23, and Pioneers, alumni and community members can expect to see the traditional face-to-face events, such as the parade and fireworks at the M, which were cancelled last year. Chancellor Shields urges the university community to remain vigilant throughout the year. I am asking all students to take the Pioneer Promise 2021 and do their part,
as a member of our communities, to stay healthy and respect their peers, he said. In compliance with the recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and local health officials, vaccinated individuals are not required to wear face coverings indoors or outdoors on the UW-Platteville campuses. Unvaccinated individuals must continue to wear face coverings indoors. UW-Platteville will continue to offer free vaccination opportunities on the main campus. The University of Wisconsin System recently announced its 70 for 70 Program. Any campus that achieves a 70% student vaccination rate will qualify for the program, through which vaccinated students will be entered into a raffle to win a $7,000 scholarship. Seventy scholarships will be awarded system wide. UW-Platteville is beginning its 156th academic year. Classes begin on Thursday, Sept. 2 on its campuses in Platteville, Baraboo and Richland Center.

YF: School (or School District) Affiliation: Ryan: Southwest Wisconsin Technical College (SWTC) YF: What/Who do you teach? Ryan: I teach the majority of the Animal and Dairy Science classes on campus, ranging from Animal Housing to Animal Health and everything in between. YF: Where did you earn your degree(s)? Ryan: I received a Bachelors of Animal Science from the University of Wisconsin Platteville in 1996. I have worked in the dairy industry all my life and began teaching at SWTC in the Fall of 2018. Additionally; I am a partner on my familys dairy farm: Weigland Registered Holsteins. YF: What led you to a career in education? Ryan: A mentor and good friend of mine, Jeff Dornink; held this position prior to me. When he announced that he was retiring, we talked about the opportunity at great lengths and he strongly suggested I put my name in the hat. I have always had the desire to share my knowledge with others and to be a role model/mentor to others in the ag industry. Teaching at SWTC allows me to do just that. Unfortunately; Jeff passed away prior to me starting at SWTC, but he left me in good hands and I know I am making him proud! YF: What was the most challenging aspect of teaching last year? Ryan: I was very fortunate that 50% of each class I taught was able to meet in person/face to face. For me, the most challenging part of the pandemic was not being able to get students out on actual farms as much as I would have preferred. Technology was also challenging at times, but we all adapted well. YF: Were there any silver linings as a result of the pandemic disruption? Ryan: I think one of the greatest attributes of those of us in agriculture is the ability we have to adapt to many different situations. This shined through time and time again throughout the pandemic. A big silver lining for all of us was to have a greater appreciation for each other and a common desire of reaching our end goal even with the situation at hand. YF: How will your experience with the pandemic affect the upcoming
school year? Ryan: I am certainly looking forward to more face to face time with my students and working with them in a classroom setting on a daily basis. I am also a realist and recognize that things can change with this pandemic at a drop of a hat, so I will cherish the time we spend together maybe a little bit more than I have in the past. Another huge aspect of teaching agriculture at SWTC is farm and industry tours/involvement. I look forward to being on the road and sharing all that agriculture has to offer in Southwest Wisconsin and beyond. YF: Whats the one thing you wish everyone knew about you or your school? Ryan: SWTC is a great place not only to work but to also receive an excellent education. Our staff is here to help you succeed and will go to great lengths to help make the vision for your future a reality. Another neat caveat of our Ag staff is that everyone on our team is also involved in production agriculture on a daily basis. I feel that brings so many opportunities and teachable moments into our classrooms that students may not find elsewhere.

Mitchell: Last year was one of the most challenging years I have had as a teacher because as students entered our building for the day, I knew there was so much more going on in life outside of the walls of our school. Families were under much extra stress due to the pandemic. At that point, it comes down to what is truly important and for me that is connecting and supporting my students/families in more than what goes on between the walls. YF: Were there any silver linings as a result of the pandemic disruption?
Mitchell: In the classroom, I was able to become more creative in my teaching, using recordings, studentcreation, and staff collaboration. I was able to empower students and give them choice in their learning, allowing them to be creative. When it comes down to it, it made me a better educator by pushing me to explore different routes of education. YF: How will your experience with the pandemic affect the upcoming school year? Mitchell: As I view the pandemic and education, we lost time with social learning and had a huge strain on the mental health of students, families, communities, and educators. I will continue to invest in students through connection, collaboration, and seeing people for people. I want school, specifically my classroom, a place that students enjoy coming to and feel cared about. YF: What’s the one thing you wish everyone knew about you or your school? Mitchell: Belmont is a small district, but this allows our students to be involved in everything, which helps shape students to who they want to be. I really enjoy being involved in a great community and this has helped shaped me as I continue to learn and grow.

Fortunately, our teachers and administrative staff were very supportive, flexible, and helpful to assist me so that I was successful and able to work with my students to provide a positive, productive learning environment. Ellen: Using technology: the videoconferencing Zoom program, Google Classroom, and on-line learning- were necessary and beneficial and now I am

Ellen: I will continue to use Google Classroom and other programs to prepare for, and incorporate into, the upcoming school year. Pam: I was looking for a job and this was part-time which fit well with my farming. YF: What was the most challenging aspect of last year? Pam: Our district is no any different from any other district in we are critically short of sub drivers. We were not able to take off and use our personal days because of this. YF: What’s the one thing you wish everyone knew about you or your job? Pam: The students on our routes become “our” kids and we love them and want them safe. We all do our best to provide safe transportation to and from school for them. This means many times avoiding accidents due to other drivers being careless and causing near accidents. YF: What is one unforgettable memory you have as a bus driver? Pam: A number of years ago, I was bringing the freshman football team home from a game at Dodgeville and one of the coaches got a call on his cell from the principal that we were heading into the path of a tornado. We pulled into a farm along the road and the family was gracious enough to allow all of us into their basement garage to wait out the storm. YF: What do you like about the children that you have been transporting? Pam: My route students help and look out for one another. They are very good about following the rules on my bus and greet me when boarding the bus and tell me good night when I drop them off at their homes after school. They really are like a family.

I’m sure all you parents and kids are excited to get back to school. I’m excited because I get to bark at all the kids as the walk by. I just love watching them from my window seat! They have these funny things hanging on their backs. I’m guessing that is where they keep all their treats! I sure wish I could have my own backpack of treats. My brother Micky doesn’t like when I announce to the house that more small humans are walking by - he just likes to be lazy and rest at the window seat. Sometimes the little humans even speed by really fast on a thing with 2 wheels. I think my humans said it is a bike. Boy, would I love to go chase those bikes! I’m sure tiny humans have pets at home, and they are really going to miss them while they are away at school. Us dogs and cats can do pretty well on our own, but it is nice to have access to a potty break, fresh water, and even toys to keep us entertained while our humans are away. Oh boy - here comes another bike to bark at - gotta go!

Children have a seemingly endless supply of energy. Channeling that energy into something positive can benefit kids’ minds and bodies. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends various amounts of daily physical activity for children depending on their ages and abilities. Adhering to these recommendations is especially important in the wake of what many public health officials fear has become an epidemic of childhood obesity in many nations. For example, the United States-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that roughly 13.7 million children between the ages of two and 19 are presently obese. In Canada, the Childhood Obesity Foundation reports that childhood obesity rates have hovered around 12 percent for years. Routine physical activity can help children maintain healthy weights, and it also pays dividends for youngsters’ mental health. According to the American Psychological Association, children between the ages of six and 18 who exercise regularly tend to have lower levels of depression, stress and psychological distress. Those findings, part of a 2019 study published in the journal Sports Medicine, reflect the ways exercise affects the mind. And the mental benefits don’t stop there, as the study also found that youngsters who are physically active also have higher levels of positive selfimage, life satisfaction and psychological well-being. STREET LABORER/SEWER OPERATOR The Village of Muscoda is seeking a responsible person to fill the position of Street Laborer/Sewer Operator. This is a full-time position with paid time off, state retirement, and health, dental & life insurance benefits. This position requires weekend standby rotation and must be available before 7:00 a.m. and after 3:30 p.m. to assist with snow removal or other emergencies. Duties include but are not limited to: cleaning and maintenance of municipal buildings, brush and compost pickup, snow removal, general park, pool and street maintenance, wastewater system maintenance, meter reading, assisting in all aspects of the public works department and as necessary work with in the utility departments and may be exposed to certain chemicals. This position will require schooling to obtain various certifications including sewer operator certifications within two years of employment. Physical requirements include but are not limited to: lift, reach, squat, bend, climb, sit, walk, read, write and hear. A complete background check will be completed on selected applicants. The successful applicant will be drug and alcohol tested and should be in good physical and mental condition. A valid Wisconsin Driver’s License is required. A Commercial Driver’s License is required within six months of employment. The starting wage will be determined based on qualifications. Residency is not required, but must be able to respond within twenty minutes.
