Tell us a little about your background: (Where you’re from, where you live now, how you spend your days) Fallon: I grew up on my dad’s farm, ZZ Ranch, between Cobb and Highland Wisconsin. I now live in Platteville Wisconsin, with my cat Yahtzee and my Guide Dog Bonus. While finishing up my education at University of WisconsinPlatteville, I spend my days balancing work, and self-care. I spend my days empowering myself at Snap Fitness, embracing nature and spirituality, loving my animals, making pottery, photography, singing, and making music with friends. My main form of transportation are my own two feet plus four paws. Walking safely is essential to my success in accomplishing daily life tasks outside of my home. I was taught Orientation and Mobility (O&M) skills from elementary through high school. These skills allow me to identify, with ear training, when a vehicle is near as well as how to tell which direction the vehicle is likely traveling based on the sound of acceleration. I was taught how to use a white cane, and how to properly cross different types of intersections, specifically Platteville’s, as it was the closest big town near me growing up with my high school being in the middle of corn fields. I have the skill to read Braille as well, although, it’s been many years since I’ve practiced. I was born with a visual impairment called Achromatopsia. I was born without the cones in my eyes, which results in complete colorblindness, extreme sensitivity to bright light (Photophobia,) which is both painful and sometimes completely blinding. I am legally blind. One thing people often misinterpret is what it can mean to be legally blind. According to WebMD, “If you’re completely blind, you can’t see any light or form. Of the people with eye disorders, only about 15% can see nothing at all. If you’re legally blind, you can still see -- just not that clearly. Normal vision is 20/20. That means you can clearly see an object 20 feet away. If you’re legally blind, your vision is 20/200 or less in one eye. That means if an object is 200 feet away, you have to stand 20 feet from it in order to see it clearly. But a person with normal vision can stand 200 feet away and see that object perfectly.” Personally, I can not see much from 20 feet away even. I hold things very close to my face to see or read. My vision with corrections is 20/200. Without corrections, it is between 20/350 and 20/375. I have special red-tinted contacts and when I wear those, people see me as a sighted person. The red covers my pupil acting as prescription sunglasses in the contact form. I have many sunglasses for different
YF: Tell us about his/her name. Fallon: This is a loaded question. I Fallon: Bonus is my Guide Dog’s official have had people harass me in Madison, working name. So, he was a Bonus to the program, and to my life. YF: What’s been your biggest aha moment since you’ve become paired with Bonus? Fallon: I realized that freedom and independence were possible for me. I depended on my mom my whole life, which I am so grateful, for everything she has done and continues to do for me. I remember bawling my eyes out after walking through a parking lot with Bonus, because I created trust and let go of fear, fear of not being able to see and getting hurt because of it. Naturally came independence, and I started to grow into times of the day and different light settings. I am always legally blind, the extreme light sensitivity is just a matter of how blind I am and that can change just like that from walking outdoors to indoors, or day and night. Due to my extreme light sensitivity, I do not get to wear my prescription most of the time, unless it is in a very dark setting. Otherwise, I need to wear dark sunglasses (welding glasses) to be able to see anything at all, to block out the light. This idea changes what people see of me, which has been confusing for people my whole life. I have an invisible disability for the most part. I feel I have adapted well to my surroundings, having grown up in the area I live, with a can-do attitude. YF: How did you come to own your service dog, Bonus? Fallon: I was a greeter at the Summer Lands’ End Warehouse Sale in Dodgeville, Wisconsin, when a Guide Dog in training decided to roam free through the doorway I was standing at. After short interaction, introductions, and small-town connections, I was given information about OccuPaws Guide Dog Association, a non-profit organization in Madison, Wisconsin. I then applied by submitting my documentation of my blindness. After interviews, and waiting for a good match, I met my Guide Dog Bonus, while I was attending Edgewood College in Madison, Wisconsin. We had two weeks of intense training together, 8 hours every day. We passed, above average in everything we were trained to do together to ensure our safety. We graduated as an official Guide Dog Team on September 11th, 2016. After about a year of success and check-ins with OccuPaws Guide Dog Mobility Instructors (GDMI’s,) I gained full ownership of my Guide Dog.
all that I now know I am capable of. To this day, I am more relaxed because of the safety and awareness my Guide Dog provides. I learned what it truly means to be fearless, physically, with his support. YF: What are some of the ways in which Bonus has changed your daily routines? Fallon: Bonus naturally keeps me more accountable with my daily routines. I feel comfortable going to the store humanly alone (with Bonus,) and shopping. He reminds me that slowing down is okay. He eases my anxiety when I cannot read something or am not sure where something is. I used to have panic/anxiety attacks simply because I felt the weight of people around me, and I felt I had no time to accomplish shopping the way they do, which just does not work for me. I do things differently when it comes to shopping because I have to. With Bonus, people are aware of that, at least to the point of needing a service animal for something. Bonus also joins me for my workouts at Snap Fitness, helping me navigate around machines and weights. YF: How have other people reacted to Bonus?
Wisconsin thinking his job is a prison, which Bonus gets so excited to work! He loves it, and if you ask anyone close to me, he is so spoiled. More commonly, I have had people assert themselves, ignoring the signage stating “GUIDE DOG, NO TOUCHING, NO TALKING, NO EYE CONTACT, PLEASE IGNORE.” Even when I have told people multiple times to not do these things, it seems as though they do not understand somehow. There has been some people who apologize and correct themselves. I hear some families from afar teaching their children, the best they can, about my Guide Dog and how he helps me, which makes my heart happy. People tend to get excited when they see dogs, I get that. What gets me though, is when people say TO my Guide Dog, “I know I’m not supposed to pet you, but you’re so cute.” Some have pet him after saying this. Few have listened and completely ignored Bonus, when we are working, which is the best thing you can do for my safety. My hopes with this, is to educate and spread awareness about Guide Dog Teams. He is my safety, my medical device, before a cute dog you see on the street. YF: What’s the one thing you wish everyone knew about you and Bonus? Fallon: Bonus is his working name. He has many nicknames that I prefer people to use other than his working name. This is because, if people say his working name around him, it is more likely he will react in the way of “What do I need to do for you?” When we are working, I say his working name, and then the command. People can call him Mushy, Mush, or other famous ones given to him such as Baby B, Mushster, Marshmallow, etc. Pretty much whatever you want to call him other than his working name is fine. Simply put, when Bonus has his harness on, he is in work mode. Please ignore him while he is doing his job. A friend once said, “It’s like if I were to come to your job and jump on your desk distracting you from it…” when talking about distractions. Although for me, it is a matter of safety. It is always best to ask or acknowledge me first, if you have any questions regarding Bonus. For drivers! Please watch for us. Please give us the extra time to cross intersections. Everyone seems to be in such a hurry, but if you slow down, it could help so many things, with driving, pedestrian safety, and in life. I am a friendly person with a kind heart, and I believe that learning and growing is an essential part of life. I do my best, to do my part. Please help me, by doing yours. Thank you!

One milestone that parents may not look forward to is their kids’ first day away from mom and dad. For many children, that day is spent at daycare. Parents may get emotional when dropping their young children off at daycare for the first time, and those emotions might only grow stronger if children cry when Mom and Dad walk away. Fortunately, there are ways to help kids adjust to starting daycare. • Drop by before the first dropoff day. Many daycare facilities encourage parents to visit the facility with their children before youngsters’ first official day at daycare. This allows kids to meet their teachers as well as other children who will be in their class. That familiarity can make first-day dropoff that much easier. • Speak with kids about daycare in advance of their first day. As kids’ first day at daycare approaches, parents can speak with them about what to expect. Discuss changes in routine as well as more exciting things, like the chance to play with other kids. YF: What is your favorite event of the entire school year? Luz: My favorite event of the school year thus far is pajama day. It reminds me that in spite of everything kids are still ADORABLE and we need to have FUN!

“Life is too short.” “ Don’t take your days for granted.” “Hug your loved ones- you never know what could happen.” “ You think you have it bad…someone has it worse.” “ We never know what tomorrow will bring. Live today like it is your last!” I hear this all of the time! Were people saying this back in the 80’s? Were they even thinking it? Were people going around telling others to learn their lessons, find their purpose and count their blessings? Were people saying hashtag, blessed? Were others showing you their highlights in life just for you to compare your, what seems to be boring life? Or were others showing you all that is wrong in the world constantly for you to fear? SO much pressure these days, am I right? From what I remember of the 80’s was all good. It was easy. It was living life free with no worries or cares. Was this the reality of the 80’s or was this the reality of me being a child? I was a child in the 80’s and I thought those were the best years ever…..my mom even says-, “best years of her life”. Now thinking of it, she was just a kid too (having me at age 17). What was it about back then? Why was it so much easier and why can’t it be like that now? “Why does being an adult have to be so hard?” Why is (you know this is coming) but why is the news always bad? Why is it that we have created so much fear and worry about the things we can’t control? I guess it is because we are living in a world now that is different. It is different than the 1980’s. BUT, THAT DOES NOT MEAN OUR WORLD IS GETTING WORSE. We just KNOW MORE NOW. We are more advanced. We learn the news and updates of EVERYONE in the speed of light. What used to take weeks or months to get to us is updated every minute it seems. The world is not getting worse. We are just getting smarter. We know more. We are evolving. This is a great thing. We are constantly creating new ways to heal and help and grow. It is good. A little to fast pace? Maybe.

YF: What did you want to be when you were in kindergarten? Kaelyn: When I was in kindergarten, I wanted to grow up to be a teacher like my mom. As a child I spent lots of time before and after school with my mom as she prepared her classroom, created activities, and set up learning centers. While mom was working in her classroom, I would pretend to teach my own class of invisible students and my favorite part was sitting in the “teacher chair” reading one of my favorite books to the “class”. YF: What do you want to be now that you are grown up? Kaelyn: Last spring, I decided that I wanted to get a head start on my career and began taking classes at Southwest Wisconsin Technical College in Fennimore, WI. I recently became nursing assistant certified and am working as a CNA in a local health care facility. In the fall I will be attending the University of Dubuque to study nursing. I plan to continue my training to become a physician’s assistant and provide attainable medical services to underserved communities. My goal is to provide advanced care in a rural underserved community where I can form close bonds with my patients and families. The community I have grown up in has given me so many opportunities to help mold me into the person that I am today. Ultimately, I want to give back to rural communities in the way they have given back to me. I really want to be able to help those who need it most. These are the demographic areas I plan to serve after earning my degree. YF: Who is your favorite teacher? Kaelyn: I’ve had so many wonderful teachers through the years that have helped shape my life. As I think back and reflect on the teachers who have made a difference in my life, I can think of quite a few teachers who have/had a gift for teaching and continue to influence me today. My favorite teacher types always tried their best to make a connection with each student in their classroom. They knew what

our interests were and about our families, provided choice in their lessons, advocated for students, and cared about us as young people. Some of those teachers pushed me to do my best and some of them were powerful enough to make me believe I could do anything. YF: What is your favorite classroom subject? Kaelyn: I don’t really have a favorite classroom subject. I enjoy learning and have a passion for knowledge. YF: What advice would you give to incoming Freshmen? Kaelyn: I would like to relay to all underclassmen that they should seize the opportunities presented to them immediately. I would not recommend that they wait to do something that they may even have the slightest interest in. I would also remind underclassmen to not take simple pleasures such as huddling with friends in the hallways and catching up over lunch in the cafeteriaI for granted. I have learned from our pandemic that when you wait for that “just right moment” you may not get to experience it at all or ever. YF: What is your best memory of high school? Kaelyn: There are many things that I will remember from my high school experience as I continue to further my education. I will remember all the pep rallies, sports games, homecoming weeks, senior pranks, and assemblies where we laughed, screamed, cried, and sometimes even slept through. I will remember the bus and van rides to FFA events, the daily trips to the cafeteria to get PB&J sandwiches, t-ping with friends, conversations in the parking lot before and after school, and many more. If I had to choose my best memory of my high school, it would be when the FFA chapter was able to come to World Dairy Expo and watched as my heifer Alexandra and I won Junior Champion of the Junior Holstein Show. The look of excitement on all of their faces and the many hugs and congratulations I received from them afterwards is something I will never forget.
