At it’s April 13th meeting the Platteville Common Council approved the Sanders-Trine pickleball complex with Owens Excavating & Trenching being awarded the project. PAPA (Platteville Area Pickleball Association) is happy to announce a ceremonial groundbreaking will be held at the southwest corner of Legion Park on April 28th at 5pm. They would like to invite all donors and the community to share in this exciting event.

Because of our community’s generous support PAPA has raised $330,726 of their $363,000 project cost to complete the 8-court pickleball complex with all fencing, lights, patio and amenities. Cindy Tang has given a $35,000 match challenge to help complete the project. The challenge makes this the perfect time to donate! Construction is expected to begin late spring with completion in August 2021.

PAPA (Platteville Area Pickle-ball Association) extends appreciation to Woodward Communications Foundation for their $8,000 donation to the Platteville pickle-ball complex. Bob Woodward, Vice-President of Woodward Community Media and Publisher of TH Media, stated, “Our employee-owned company i s proud to be a part of the coalition that’s making this project a reality. It’s so great to see the alliances between the City, the school system and the Platteville area community. It’ll benefit people of all ages for years to come. We’re happy to be a part of it.” Platteville Park & Recreation Director, Luke Peters, presented the project contract to the Common Council on March 23rd for their approval. The lowest bidder was Owen Excavation & Trenching from Cuba City, Wisconsin. The total amount raised is $299,090 towards the $350,000 project amount. PAPA’s vision of a 8 court state of the art, fully lit complex with a patio is nearing their goal. I decided to come to Rosemeyer Jones Chiropractic after numerous times at other health care providers without any results. About three years ago I was lifting something very heavy (more than I should have been), and felt something weird in my lower back. It didn’t really bother right away and I kept working. The next day, however, I could not move and had very severe pain and tingling in my left leg. I assumed it would go away and it never did. Two months later, even though I had been going through physical therapy, I was still having the pain, although it was not as intense as it had been in the beginning. After dealing with this for the past three years, I was ready for some changes. The surface area of this fungal membrane can become enormous, developing as much as 500 miles of fungal hyphae in a single cubic foot of soil. The more complex it becomes, the greater the health and vitality of the plant. When one uses herbicides, pesticides, nematicides or fungicides, when one applies excessive fertilizer and does excessive soil cultivation, it kills off helpful fungi. In reality, most farm land doesn’t contain very much mycorrhizae. In their absence, plants must rely exclusively on their roots to take up nutrients. This isn’t good, because most plants were designed to need the help of fungi. A plant’s root system has just one thousandth of the surface are of the fungi membrane, so nutrient uptake is severely limited with out the help of fungi, sometimes decreasing by 70% or more. Popularity grows in community SUBMITTED BY DENA GRUTZ, PLATTEVILLE AREA PICKLEBALL ASSOCIATION “In 2010, Kathleen and I winter vacationed in Mesa, AZ at Venture Out where we began playing pickleball. When we returned we organized a group of 10 people to begin playing pickleball at the University outdoor basketball courts. We all contributed to purchasing two portable nets which we still use at the Armory. Since those early days we have had about 58 other people join us in playing pickleball at both the Armory and outdoors either at the Westview tennis courts or the University basketball courts. The sport of pickleball is easy to learn but challenging to master. There are many pickleball players in the Platteville area that would enjoy providing some introductory lessons if anyone is interested. The cost of the sport is very minimal as you only need to purchase a racket. If you are interested to learn more about the game PAPA has several rackets that can be used as you begin playing.” Wally & K athleen Iselin “Pickleball was always a popular unit in my Middle School Phy. Ed. classes. After retirement from the Platteville School District, I joined a small group playing pickleball at the Platteville Armory. When making the decision to move closer to family in Platteville, we were happy to find a welcoming group of like-minded pickleball players already established. It is a lifetime sport, providing lifetime friendships. Players of all ages, skill levels, and physical abilities can play, compete and enjoy the company of others in a fun environment so the sport is growing in popularity. As it is growing in Platteville, we need more courts as the three indoor courts are often overcrowded and the outdoor courts are makeshift and not specific to the game. Generations of Pickleball Play BY LARRY TRINE

ecades ago, two couples found they had many things in common. They were all teachers. They were active members of the same church, they championed some of the same causes, they both had families, they lived in the same community, and they loved sports. Dawson Trine and B ill Sanders and Jean Sanders taught in the UW-Platteville Mathematics Department, while Marie Trine taught third grade at Westview Elementary School, Platteville WI. In their retirement years, the two couples continued to support the community o latte ille while finding time to stay young with activities like tennis, golf, pickleball, walking, water aerobics, and exercise classes.

Dawson and B ill competed for years on the tennis court, and then added pickleball to their activities. Dawson brought pickleball to Platteville after playing it Bill & Jean Sanders in F lorida in the late 9 0’s. Then, B ill Sanders encouraged the C ity of Platteville to reconstruct their nearly abandoned tennis courts in 2010. These days, these four friends are still active, with family and friends, spending their time in warmer climates during the winter and in Platteville the rest of the year. hile the rines find he illages in central F lorida ideal for their outdoor activities, the Sanders find that enture ut in ri ona suits their acti e lifestyle.

As the fastest growing sport in the country, pickleball is yet another avenue for these friends to stay young. A: We average about 3-4 trips a year! L ast year we had 5 planned but weren’t able to go due to C ovid.

A: Probably about 8-10 trips.

Q: W h at w as y ou r f avorite trip ? A: Alaksa! I won $ 400 playing bingo!! I really have loved them all, but here are some of my favorites. N ew England F all F oliage, Springtime in the Southeast. Yellowstone and Pikes Peak. Q: F u nny m em ory ? A: On the Springtime in the Southeast tour, we decided to walk by the water to go to a Mexican restaurant and it seemed like we just kept walking and walking to get there. We ordered our meal and then decided it was too far to walk back so we asked for a shuttle but they didn’t have one. We called Pat for a ride. She ended up coming to pick us up in a golf cart so we all piled in!

Q: What was your favorite trip? A: Mt. R ushmore, G lacier N ational Park. Texas, N iagara F alls. Q: Share a memory? A: I really enjoyed the trip out West to G lacier N ational Park. Dan was usually driving the bus but on this trip he was able to sit in the back of the bus with Pat and enjoy the trip. It was great to see him riding in the Jammer cars. n every home on every block on every street and lot and farm in southwest Wisconsin, people have stories to tell of this pandemic year. I have one. You have one. And every last one of the 9 1,832 souls in G rant, Iowa, and L afayette C ounties has their own story to tell. G rief. L oss. Struggle. Isolation and loneliness. Despair. H ardship. Desperation. R esilience. And hope for better days. All over our beloved communities and across our beautiful rolling hills and valleys, our stories – each one of them separate and unique – are connected as never before by an invisible virus that threatened our lives and livelihoods. At Southwest H ealth, our story has always been about community, and never has that been more evident than this year. As the region’s healthcare system, community matters here. That’s because your wellbeing is our purpose. So when the health of every person in southwest Wisconsin is at stake, we go all out. We show up for our communities like no one else. When the pandemic came knocking, Southwest H ealth responded. Immediately, our C EO Dan R ohrbach initiated our emergency response systems and created a full-scale command team to lead, monitor, communicate, and plan. We met every day. We left nothing out. We held nothing back. This was no drill. We are each responsible for the safety of all. And we are all to take action necessary for zero harm. And together, we create a highlyreliable organization. In other words, it takes all of us. Although those words were care ully cra ted to re ect our sta s shared dedication to high uality and highly reliable healthcare systems, it felt almost as if we’d anticipated the uncharted waters of the pandemic. Turns out, WE begins with ME is exactly what was required. Together, we persisted. In the face of challenges none of us had ever before faced, our team climbed that mountain. L ooking back, the intensity of my own anxiety, my fears, and my angst over what could happen are all undeniable. Yet I was also surrounded by other leaders with resolute determination and a team of co-workers I knew could accomplish anything. We had each other’s backs, and we had the backs of everyone in southwest Wisconsin. As a result, our incredible healthcare organization adapted quickly. Every day we did things we had never done before. And we did them well.

We planned and prepared for worst case scenarios. The very real possibility existed that any healthcare system in the country could be overwhelmed, and it seemed our team was prepared even for that.



We created the “Safe In Our C are” initiative to ensure our facility was always clean and safe for patients and employees alike. As simple as it sounds this a ected e erything from comprehensive changes to disinfecting protocol and visitor policies to temperature checks to even overhauling our appointment scheduling and check-in procedures to ensure patients were always distanced.



Our materials management team began painstakingly tracking our daily use of vital supplies and tracking down the life-saving stocks of personal protective equipment that were for many months in such scarce supply.



We suspended non-essential care to reduce the chance of further infections and focus on the urgent needs.



We created an enclosed and completely separate C OVID unit for patients with more severe cases who required admission to the hospital. This included establishing a third negati e air ow patient room to further contain the virus.



We also created a temporary clinic completely separate from our hospital facility to care for patients with upper respiratory infections who could be potentially infected with C OVID.



We added a driveway and rear exit to our EMS Station garage area to establish a sheltered drive through testing site. This made testing faster and easier for our community.



nd when accines finally became available, we designed the region s most e ecti e systems communicated with our patients, and practically overnight launched a clinic where we vaccinated thousands of high-risk people in a very short time.

The investments this work required was massive. With nearly 500 employees, the

investment of hours worked is by itself an ocean of energy and resources. The o site respiratory clinic alone re uired more than 2,000 hours to operate. There were 2,000 curbside pickups from our pharmacy. Or, even more striking, the 10,635 C OVID tests performed which necessitates the tests, the time, and the lab work. The creation of the drivethru facility alone came with a cost of $ 30,000. There were also the purchases of new equipment and vast quantities of supplies and personal protective equipment. N ow, to help speed the end to it all, our team to date placed over 8,000 vaccines in arms requiring a small army o sta to raise their hands to co er the additional duties. The commitment to communities is staggering. While one could tally the hours, count the dollars, or inventory the tests and supplies, I’ve seen for myself what can’t be calculated. I’ve witnessed and heard of plenty of extraordinary examples of courage and commitment in my years at Southwest H ealth, but this year I saw our team operate on an entirely new level. An intensity and duration of commitment beyond imagination. Our stories from this year deserve to be heard. All of them. I want to know the loss and isolation and struggles our communities faced are understood by future generations. And because I can, I am personally compelled to tell my perspective of Southwest H ealth’s story. saw first hand how this team responded to the enormous responsibilities. I saw how this team proved its commitment to our communities is real. And that, I know in my heart, is a story that needs telling. This team shows up for us every day. Sometimes, like this past year, we show up in extraordinary ways. The hardships of the pandemic aside, I know what a privilege it is for me to work here. The fact I have that privilege means I understand the dedication this team feels to the people of southwest Wisconsin. Telling this story is my way of helping others also understand that dedication. There is no one else to step in and do what we do for our communities. L eisure activities may be widely viewed as un ways to fill up ree time but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal B B A Molecular B asis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging R esearch C enter in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain acti ities and cogniti e unction defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely a oiding boredom. The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insu cient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the e ects o certain types o leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in a ected indi iduals. multi domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and map reading, among other activities. B y making exercise part of their day-to-day routines, people of all ages, including men and women over the age of 65, can greatly improve their overall health. The American Academy of F amily Physicians notes that seniors should aspire to be as active as possible. Exercise is a great way to incorporate physical activity into your daily routine and has been linked to reduced risk for diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and osteoporosis. Though adults with chronic illnesses may be hesitant to exercise, the AAF P notes that it’s possible for men and women who have been diagnosed with such conditions to exercise safely. In fact, the C enters for Disease C ontrol and Prevention notes that regular physical activity is one of the most important things seniors can do for their health and can potentially prevent many health problems associated with aging.
