Friday, March 5, 2021 marked our 50th wedding anniversary. We were married likewise on a Friday evening, March 5, 1971, during a candlelight ceremony at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Montfort, WI. While the candles warmly glowed inside, a blizzard was in full force outside. Family guests’ vehicles sliding into one another was not the best way for our relatives to meet, but it did create a memory that helps many to remember our special night! Debbie grew up in Belmont and Mike on a farm in rural Montfort. We met through a mutual friend and quickly realized there was a growing love between us. Looking back, at that time someone 50 years old seemed ancient; now here we are having been married for 50 years! Time surely didn’t drag its feet! We have lived on the lovely country road of Crow Valley, Montfort our entire marriage. Both of us are retired - Mike from farming and Debbie from teaching. You can’t take the farming out of Mike as he still enjoys helping out on the family farm. Nor can you take the teaching out of Debbie as the grandchildren would attest to when their grammar is corrected. Debbie has spread her wings and taken on serious chicken raising... with a flock of six hens, plus loves to garden and be outside. Life is precious, and we are content. We have three sons: Troy (Penny) in Platteville, Jade (Joslyn Peters) in Menomonee Falls, and Dirk (Natasha) on the family farm rural Montfort. Our life has been blessed and is kept full and busy with 13 grandchildren. We will celebrate with a family getaway to be planned in the near future. Cindy is impressed with the passion the pickleball players have in their vision to build Platteville’s newest amenity. The total cost of this 8 court pickleball complex with lights and a patio is $350,642. PAPA has raised $283,438 which is 81% of their goal. The committee is ready for the contract to be signed with Owen’s Excavating and Trenching from Cuba City, WI. We are short $70,000 of totally funding the project. A general clean-up of Hillside and Greenwood Cemeteries will begin on Monday, April 5, 2021. Please remove any flowers or decorations you wish to save by Sunday, April 4, 2021. During clean-up, cemetery personnel will discard all flowers or decorations remaining after April 4, 2020. Flowers and decorations may again be placed after Friday, April 9, 2021. You are reminded that flowers and decorations should be placed on either end of the headstone and not in front of or behind. This allows equipment access for digging future graves. All Cemetery rules will be enforced during the 2021 Season. Please take this time to review the rules listed below. Rules and Guidelines for City Owned Cemeteries: 1. No trees or shrubs or ground displays are to be planted or established. 2. Artificial and cut flowers are permitted if clamped to the monument, or on a onelegged stand directly over the monument, or in a non-breakable container adjacent to the side of the monument. No glass containers are to be used in the cemetery. 3. Flowers may be planted at the side of monuments. 4. All floral urns must be placed at the side of monuments. 5. No new monuments shall be erected that are larger than the largest monument in that section of the cemetery. 6. The City reserves the right to remove or dispose of any unsightly arrangements. 7. One week I could see the grass, and now it is gone again! Can you believe it!? But now when I run outside, I don’t freeze up like a little popsicle (which are delicious). Before the grass disappeared, there were all kinds of wonderful smells of dirt, remnants of fall leaves, and all the tracks of little creatures. I know those rabbits and squirrels are sneaking through my territory again. I can track their trails. But, no matter how many times I follow their scent trail, they are never at the end! I just want them to stick around so I can get a good close look at them. The humans are being weird again. They have started wiping our paws off at the door. I never know what crazy thing they are going to be up to next. I don’t mind a little mud on my paws, so why do they? As a matter of fact, my brothers like the mud on their paws, too! Those humans should just let us be muddy buddies! We even celebrated something called “St. Patrick’s Day”! We had delicious beef, potatoes and carrots! I love when we get to eat the human food. Well, I better go set up my post watching out the window for all those squirrels. I need to alert the house when they creep into our yard!
