YF: What has been the most challenging obstacle you have faced with virtual teaching? Julie: My most challenging obstacle is the unknown. Each day you wonder who in your class will be quarantined and how to give the Kinder the best education at home.

YF: Do you have a funny story about a virtual blooper? Julie: While zooming with one of my student’s, a little brother or sister was running around naked behind the Kinder. YF: What is your favorite aspect of in-person learning? Julie: My favorite part of in-person learning is seeing my Kinders’ smiles each day. They want to be here with me in school.

YF: What is your favorite aspect of virtual learning? Julie: My favorite part of virtual learning is the amazement of all the resources and materials out there to help teachers. Teachers are wanting to help each other to be successful.

YF: Do you have one tip to share with parents? Julie: Be kind to yourself. You are a hero in my eyes. We couldn’t do this without all their help.

YF: What is your favorite event of the entire school year? Julie: My favorite event was that our school was able to have a safely distanced Veteran’s Day Parade for our local Vets. We stood out on the side walk cheering them on as they passed us on the street.

Your Name: Katie Audetat School Name: Cuba City Elementary School School Mascot: Cubans Grade Level You Teach: K-5 General Music YF: What has been the most challenging obstacle you have faced with virtual teaching? Katie: Something that has been challenging is keeping the kids 6 feet apart and not being able to share instruments in the classroom. I have had to have each student have their own instrument or item when I am passing things out. A lot of my lessons would consist of students playing the beat on an instrument and then passing it onto the next student. My lessons also consist of movement and we still do that, but instead of moving around the room, the students stay by their spots to respond to the music. I have also had to alter singing games that are usually done in a circle. I’ve made it work, but it can be challenging! Thankfully, my room is big enough where I am still able to sing with my students since we can social distance.

YF: Do you have a funny story about a virtual

blooper? Katie: In March when I would Zoom into classrooms, my dogs Brahms and Luna would always make an appearance. Usually they would get riled up because they would hear people talking on the computer. Since they hadn’t seen other people for a while with the shutdown, they would start to play and sometimes growl loudly and playfully. They would then jump on the couch and be distracting to the students, but the students always liked seeing them!

YF: What is your favorite aspect of in-person learning? Katie: Our district hired interns for grades 2-5 this year so we could have an extra section to help with social distancing. I have been enjoying the smaller class sizes. I have between 10-15 students in my classroom at one time. On average in past years the class sizes have been around 20 students! It has been nice building relationships with students in the smaller class size setting.

YF: What is your favorite aspect of virtual learning? Katie: I really enjoy the programs we use for virtual learning. For Kindergarten and First Grade we use SeeSaw and 2nd-12th grade we use Schoology. We used them last Spring, so the students are used to using the programs so if we ever need to go virtual or if students need to go virtual, they have learned how to use these programs. It’s user friendly and it’s neat the lessons I can set up on there, virtually.

YF: Do you have one tip to share with parents? Katie: Our parents have been super awesome, supportive, and understanding during these times of COVID, so I would just say keep doing what you are doing to support your child and don’t be afraid to reach out to the teacher with any questions you have!

YF: What is your favorite event of the entire school year? Katie: My favorite event usually is when I have my Spring Concert in May with my students. I work hard with them to rehearse and pick out music I think they and the audience will like while also learning musical concepts along the way. I cannot wait to have concerts again!

Your Name: Karyssa Prohaska School Name: Iowa Grant School District School Mascot: Panthers Grade Level You Teach: 5th Grade Social Studies YF: What has been the most challenging obstacle you have faced with virtual teaching? Karyssa: Technology issues is the biggest obstacle for me. Internet is spotty or goes out, I cannot physically try to help students fix their technology. It is also challenging to come up with effective ways to teach and give the same outcome as they would get in person.

YF: Do you have a funny story about a virtual blooper? Karyssa: I was in the middle of teaching virtually from home and a student goes, “What is that weird sound?” It was my dog laying on the other side of my computer, snoring!

YF: What is your favorite aspect of in-person learning? Karyssa: The students! I like being able to interact with them, help them, joke with them, and just see those lightbulb moments.

YF: What is your favorite aspect of virtual learning? Karyssa: I like that the students do not have to wear their masks so I can see their smiles.

YF: Do you have one tip to share with parents?

Karyssa: Practice patience, grace, and forgives. This is new to your student, teachers, and you. We will get through this together. Also, check your student’s grade. Just because they say it is turned in does not mean it is :). YF: What is your favorite event of the entire school year? Karyssa: In a normal year, my favorite is the end of the year ropes course trip. Its fun to see kids push their abilities, encourage each other and just have fun together.

Your Name: Megan Cooley School Name: Lancaster High School School Mascot: Flying Arrows Grade Level You Teach: High School Special Education YF: What has been the most challenging obstacle you have faced with virtual teaching? Megan: The most challenging thing about virtual teaching is not being able to read student’s facial expressions and body language when they need help. A lot of my job is to read what students need without them asking.

YF: Do you have a funny story about a virtual blooper? Megan: Last month, my boss asked us to record ourselves singing a holiday song for a fun activity in place of our usual Christmas party. I chose to sing Silent Night, but to make it funny I kept my mute on the whole time!

YF: What is your favorite aspect of in-person learning? Megan: There is nothing better than working together to accomplish a goal. Often, the greatest learning happens in the interactions between activities, when the students teach each other.

YF: What is your favorite aspect of virtual learning? Megan: I haven’t done much virtual learning/ teaching, but I don’t mind keeping my comfy slippers on under my desk! In all seriousness, I love that we have the technology to connect, share, and learn even from our homes.

YF: Do you have one tip to share with parents? Megan: Stay in constant communication with your child’s teachers. You are not bothering us to check in.

YF: What is your favorite event of the entire school year? Megan: My favorite event is usually the Veteran’s Day program, when the whole community gathers to celebrate local heroes with songs, stories, and applause. It’s so neat to see kids of all ages proudly introducing their loved ones. This year it was a little different, but we still had the opportunity to honor our veterans with a parade.

catch-up with one another! One day, I saw a bird caught in some netting attached to my house, so I decided that I would have my class watch me attempt to free the bird from the Zoom meeting! I am terrified of birds, so what I hoped would be a heroic freeing of the bird turned into myself shrieking as I tried to free the bird from as far away as possible (while wearing a very large hooded sweatshirt and sweatpants for protection). I did end up freeing the bird, though!

YF: What has been the most challenging obstacle you have faced with virtual teaching? Amanda: I would have to say all of the “behindthe-scenes” work. It takes a lot of time to ensure that you are giving the students the correct virtual or in-person document, as well as spending hours making virtual copies of an assignment that is usually in-person, and vice-versa. It has given me the chance to improve on my organizational skills as well as time management so that I can be sure I am providing my students with the materials that they need!

YF: Do you have a funny story about a virtual blooper? Amanda: This wasn’t necessarily a blooper, but more so a funny opportunity that arose. In the spring when we were first shut down, due to COVID-19 I would have Zoom meetings with some of my classes for non-academic purposes. and say that one of my favorite parts of middle school was rotating students each hour and seeing new faces all day. I was beyond nervous to have the same group of students for the entire day, but I have loved getting to know these kids on a different level than other years, and I genuinely enjoy the environment that our class has created! I like to have a lot of fun and use humor whenever possible, so I love that the students in my homeroom are at a point where they understand appropriate times to do this, and they also like to dish the playfulness/sarcasm back to me. It’s a blast, and I love my homeroom! I do miss the opportunity to get to know the other kids as well as my homeroom, but I understand and support our policies to protect ourselves and stay healthy, so I am making the most out of the time I have with my group!

YF: What is your favorite aspect of virtual learning? Amanda: I have two things that are tied as my favorite part of virtual learning. The first one is that I feel that my own skills and knowledge of online sources have expanded immensely. Since some students aren’t in-person at all, I have to find an online version of whatever text or activity we are working on, and it needs to be as substantial as any instruction that they would receive in-person. part of virtual learning is the relationships that I formed. I was very nervous when I was teaching the virtual students this past fall since I wouldn’t get the chance to meet them in-person. That being said, I truly feel that I formed very strong relationships with them since we would communicate almost twice as much as normal via Google Hangouts messaging, the Zoom chat, video calls, etc. It’s a different method of building relationships with students than I am used to, but I think it’s amazing and I love the time that I get to spend with any virtual students!

It exhausts me just telling you how busy you are. How are you possibly going to get it all done? I worked 50-60 hours a week back in the day and do you know what my constant struggle was? MY HEALTH. It was ALWAYS on my mind. ALWAYS. I was always stressed about food. It was all I thought about. I HATED getting dressed. I hated my closet. I was always shopping trying to feel better about myself when in reality whatever I bought was not going to help. I hated my insides and no 200 dollar pair of jeans was going to fix that Why would you look outside for a pair of keys that you lost inside of your house? Why would you search your entire garage for your slippers that you keep in your closet? Why would you look in your bathroom for your dishwasher soap? Why would you look in your kids room for your own clothes? Do you get what I am saying? WHY ARE YOU LOOKING ON THE OUTSIDE FOR THE PROBLEM THAT COULD POSSIBLY LIE WITHIN? You are exhausted trying to figure out why NOTHING is working. When the truth is you don’t have to try so hard. Just narrow it down. Until I realized that I was never going to be able to make any progress without simplifying the problem I was never going to feel good...inside or out. The Problem? It was me. It was not because I was too busy or too tired or any other excuse I made up. I may have been those things..but I could NOT FIX ANY OF IT until I FIXED me...INSIDE How did I stop this cycle? I practiced this in 5 simple steps  I stopped blaming my circumstances for my unhappiness  I got up every single day and moved my body

I started to feed my body real, whole foods I drank water, water, water and more water Mostly...  I began sitting in it. Sitting in my thoughts. Slowing down. Meditating/praying. Listening to myself and my surroundings. Became more picky about who and what I let in my heart and soul. I let go of the things and people who did not lift me, inspire me, make me want to be better. I let go of ANY resentment. And, ABOVE ALL I FORGAVE. Yes I forgave people who have wronged me AND I forgave myself. I forgave myself for even being in a position for needing to get my health in check. I forgave others because that anger was haunting me and keeping me from going anywhere good. Yes, even that person. That person who was SO wrong and did you so unfairly. You have to forgive. You don’t have to EVER be around them. But for yourself you must not hang on to it any more if you want to go anywhere else in life. “The snake bite will not kill you, it is the venom that continuously runs through your veins that will destroy you.” You may have been bitten but don’t let it keep running through you. 1935, during the depths of the Great Depression, when two men paid $10 for a tumble-down stone cottage and, using rustic building materials at hand, restored the tiny building and opened a café with a limited menu of Cornish dishes. Robert Neal and Edgar Hellum -- partners in life, building and

business – continued to restore rundown stone homes as the restaurant achieved surprising success. One by one, they built a compound of Cornish structures in the city’s old lead mining valley, and when they retired in 1970 they deeded their property to the state of Wisconsin as the Pendarvis Site, open to the public as a educational tour center. For the citizens of Mineral Point, it was more than that: it was an inspirational model for continuing action to preserve our buildings and landscapes. The National Trust for Historic Preservation selected Mineral Point in 2007 as one of its Dozen Distinctive Destinations, an annual competition among unique and lovinglypreserved communities in the United States. It was the smallest city chosen, and the Trust’s website described it as, “A hidden gem nestled in rolling hills; a walk through the town is to experience a century and a half of architecture, from Cornish rock cottages to

Craftsman bungalows, from simple log cabins to neoclassical manors.” Fifty years ago, the city was recognized on the National Register of Historic Places as a quintessentially American town with a strong sense of belonging, authenticity and charm. Those qualities are still part of Mineral Point’s daily life, as we dream, plan and work to enrich both our legacy and our economy through heritage tourism. l
