Sheri Engelke, LPEC Chair, shared the following: “I am pleased to announce a very kind and generous donation, given by Mary Lou Broske, for the new Legion Park Event Center. One of the two Halls within the Center will be named the ‘Bill and Mary Lou Broske Hall’.” Mrs. Broske is making this gift to our Platteville community in memory of her husband, Bill, who passed away early this year. Bill lived to be 92 years old and was very civic, community and internationally minded. Bill graduated from Rewey High School and immediately served in the US Army in WW II, from 1944 to 1946. After leaving the Army, Bill’s plan was to take advantage of the GI bill and become a dentist. Unfortunately, Bill’s father had health problems, so Bill returned home to work with his father in the cheese and butter manufacturing business. After 25 years in the cheese business, Bill sold the corporation. He was subsequently employed by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection for 18 years as a cheese and food inspector. Bill received his B.S. in Agricultural Economics and later his M.S. in Agricultural Industries, both from UW-Platteville. He was known world-wide as an international cheese judge. Upon his retirement, Bill became involved in volunteer work with developing countries - helping them develop sustainable ways to make cheese and market their own cheese, butter, yogurt and ice cream. Romania actually named a cheese ‘American Bill’ after him. Bill was a member of First English Lutheran Church, a life time member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a member of the local Masonic Lodge, a board member of the UWPlatteville Foundation, a member and past president of Rotary International Platteville, and a member of the UWPlatteville Friends of International Students. Bill and Mary Lou moved to Platteville in 1972. Mary Lou taught elementary school for 22 years in Lancaster. After retirement, Mary Lou was very active in supporting Bill’s international volunteerism in developing countries and continued her role as an educator by substitute teaching. She continues her support of International and National Teacher organizations to include Delta Kappa Gamma. She is very supportive of state and local writing programs – most specifically with Grant, Lafayette and Iowa counties.

Fennimore Solar Farm Ribbon Cutting Members of the Fennimore Industrial and Economic Development Corp and City Council held a ribbon cutting for the new 18 acre solar array which is currently the largest solar farm in Wisconsin. The project is part of what is known as the Butter Solar portfolio, a group of 10 different solar projects located in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa. A Canadian based BluEarth Renewables officially acquired the project in March 2019. The City of Fennimore’s electric utility, worked through their electric buying group UMMEG, and has entered into a 25 year power purchase agreement with Butter Solar to buy all electricity produced at the local solar farm. Director of Public Works, Dennis Biddick, shared “the solar farm will supply approximately 18 percent of Fennimore’s annual electric needs. The City currently purchases 22 percent of their electric needs from wind energy, bringing us up to 40 percent of Fennimore Utilities annual electric needs being produces by renewable energy. This far surpasses the city’s goal of 20 percent renewable by 2020.” Fennimore’s city-owned electric, water and sewer utilities offer highly competitive rates and dependable service can save businesses substantial operating dollars.
