Platteville pollinator garden project wins AARP’s Small Dollar, Big Impact grant PLATTEVILLE, WISCONSIN – The Mining & Rollo Jamison Museums/City of Platteville Museum Department has been selected to receive one of AARP Wisconsin’s “Small Dollar, Big Impact” grants, which are being awarded monthly in 2020 to projects around the state that are designed to improve communities and make them better places for everyone to live, work and play as they age. Judges selected the project for the $1,000 grant which will help fund a project that will expand, beautify and make the Gail E. & Wes E. Kopp Memorial Pollinator Garden available in all seasons for the community to enjoy. Erik Flesch, director of the museum, said “The Mining & Rollo Jamison Museums are thrilled to have been awarded AARP Wisconsin Small Dollar, Big Impact Grant for the Gail E. and Wes E. Kopp Memorial Pollinator Garden. These funds will go far to extend museum narratives to include the native plant and pollinator species of our Driftless Area landscape, providing a healthy and beautiful outdoor destination for visitors of all ages.” Osceola, a small community in northern Wisconsin, was the first grant winner, and projects in Platteville and Milwaukee are the second to receive awards. Social distancing guidelines and recommendations urged consumers to stay in their homes as much as possible, but grocery shopping requires people to spend time outside their homes. A few simple strategies can help shoppers stay safe as they shop for groceries.

 Wash hands before and after going to the store. The CDC continues to tout the importance of washing hands as a means to preventing the spread of COVID-19. Scientists are still unsure about how easily the virus can spread from contact with potentially contaminated surfaces, but washing hands before and after shopping is a simple safety measure that prevents the spread of germs and potentially harmful viruses like COVID-19.

 Wear a mask. Safety guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are evolving as scientists learn more about COVID-19. One of the more significant changes the CDC made to its initial guidelines was to recommend people wear cloth face coverings in public settings where social distancing measures are difficult to maintain. As communities begin to reopen, certain restrictions may be relaxed, but the CDC continues to advise people to wear masks while out in public, including when shopping for groceries. The CDC notes that wearing masks may slow the spread of the virus by preventing people who have it but are asymptomatic from transmitting it to

others.  Shop during off-peak hours. Traditionally “off-peak” hours may no longer apply at many grocery stores, the majority of which have changed their store hours so staff can thoroughly clean and disinfect stores each night. But even if stores are not open as late as they used to be, there’s still times of day when fewer customers will likely be in the store. Early mornings may be designated for shoppers in vulnerable populations, such as the elderly. However, many stores remain less crowded in the mornings than they are during the rest of the day. Avoid shopping on weekends if you want to steer clear of crowds, as

Takeout has always provided a respite from cooking meals at home, but it seems especially welcomed during the COVID-19 outbreak. Now more than ever, individuals and families could use a break from cooking three meals per day. When opting for takeout, consider these tasty tips.  Support small businesses. Independent restaurants could have a tougher time bouncing back from reduced sales and income than large restaurant chains. When seeking out food- and beverage-related businesses, lean heavily on momand-pop restaurants, many of which are pillars in their communities. These are the businesses whose owners may have children in your local schools or those who sponsor local sports leagues.

When placing an order for takeout or curbside pickup, pay by credit card online or over the phone if that is an option. This limits how much you and restaurant employees have to handle cards or cash.  Avoid direct handoffs. Ask the counter server or delivery person to put down your order and step away before you grab it. This is an extra step to combat the spread of the virus. Even as stay-at-home restrictions are being relaxed, takeout figures to remain popular. Certain tips can keep everyone well fed and safe and help bars and restaurants stay afloat.

All livestock shows start at 9:00 a.m. with the exception of the dairy cows at 7:00 p.m. and goats at 2:00 p.m. All livestock shows will take place in the dairy and beef show arena. The auction will start at 10:00 a.m. in the grandstands with no animals or exhibitors walking through a ring. There will be no gate charge to get in. A freewill donation is encouraged, after signing the waiver.

2017: Madison County Band Throughout the last 30 years, great music acts have hit the stage at the Lafayette County Fair. One of the largest shows to come was Craig Morgan in 2008. When his “International Harvester” song hit #10 on the charts in the fall of 2007, it quickly became a top song of choice for rural America. Fans filled the grandstands and track. A contest was created and a combine was drove right down near the stage for Morgan’s act. It was a night many will remember. Other top performers including Toby Keith and Trick Pony who enjoyed the downtown Darlington establishments after their concerts, and class acts like the Bellamy Brothers and Pam Tillis in the early 90’s.

While musical acts are great to see and watch, price and full music festivals limited availability for more recent years at county fairs. Now motorsports events seem to be the top crowd favorites. In “normal” years where COVID-19 isn’t a worry, things like Monster Trucks and Stock Car races are the grandstand events. Then there’s also those Gauntlet, Crash Cars and Truck Trailer races everyone seems to love on the Sunday night “out with a bang” event of the fair. While all but two nights of stock car races are canceled for this year, the 2021 Lafayette County Fair is sure to bring back some great grandstand fun!

165 YEARS IN 2020

The Lafayette County Fair was Established in 1856 Making it the 165th Fair in 2020! It is no secret that Lafayette County is the state’s most agricultural dependent county. With full barns, crop exhibits overflowing and farm families making up a large portion of our attendance, farming is a main highlight of the Lafayette County Fair. Everything started back in 1857 when a group of men got together. They wanted to improved conditions of agriculture, horticulture, the household arts and local industry. They figured the best way to do this was

to have a fair, and they organized the “Lafayette County Agricultural Society.” During that time the fair was held on Center Hill, but by 1893 they had moved to the meadow. In 1899 five new livestock buildings were added. A new entrance, ticket office and 10 water hyrdrants were added too. This was the same year that all the buildings were painted white and the fair was unofficially named, “The Big White Fair.”

While many things have changed throughout the years, the fair is still a place for families and provides a place to recognize the young people for their efforts. It remains a place for people of the county to show off their talents and socialize. The magic is still there for the little ones to enjoy the midway and eat the delicious food. And most importantly, the fair is still an avenue for sharing ideas and creativity. The fair is a place we can learn from each other.
