77 PHS 2020 Seniors Receive $143,960 in Scholarship Support Who would have dreamed that only 11 years after organizing to provide more scholarship support for graduating Hillmen, the efforts of the volunteer PHS Scholarship Advisory Board would be so successful. The great Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps is noted for saying, “There will be obstacles. There will be doubters. There will be mistakes. But with hard work, there are no limits.” That truly describes the work of the volunteers who have worked with individuals and families to create over 25 endowments and with donors and area businesses to secure annual support. In fact, with the 2020 scholarship awards, PHS Scholarship Fund volunteers have awarded $1,082,745 to 657 students. Additionally, the endowments that have been established are valued at over $1,000,000 and will provide scholarships in perpetuity. Sheila Kelley, PHS Scholarship Advisory Board Chair, was particularly pleased to award the inaugural Edward and Dorothy Halferty Memorial Scholarship from an endowment created by their granddaughter, Jean, and her husband, David (both PHS graduates). Dorothy and Edward farmed together, on Platteville’s north side, most of their marriage. Additionally, Dorothy who earned her CNA and x-ray technician certifications, worked at the Platteville Hospital and the Cuba City Nursing Home. In honoring her grandparents, Jean noted that it was their love, support and caring that sustained her through her Platteville schooling and provided a foundation for her success in earning her undergraduate and her law degrees from UW-Madison. Kelley also noted the continuing scholarship support by Max Anderson, in honor of Rosemary Anderson (deceased), who taught in the special education department at PHS for 22 years. 2020 marks the 5th year that the Rosemary Anderson Memorial Scholarships directed to students who will attend a technical school to pursue study in a program resulting in a living wage career. Rosemary is fondly remembered by many students, whether they had her as a teacher or not, as “that special person” who cared about their success both in the classroom and in life. PHS Scholarship Fund Advisory Board volunteer Gene Weber has been instrumental in securing business support of scholarships. Weber noted that Kunes Country Auto Group, the new owner of the Platteville Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and RAM dealership, signed on to support scholarships. Jennifer Myers, Corporate Director of Marketing Management, and Derek Furrer, General Manager for the Platteville location, had previous experience with the scholarship program, noting its importance demonstrating the community’s support for our school and its teachers and students. The PHS Scholarship Fund is a component of the Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin, a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt public charity. The volunteer advisory board has been organized to assist in developing endowments and in securing annual gifts. About 50% of the monies awarded to the Class of 2020 were available from endowments; the other money was secured during the year through annual appeals. Fennimore Community Food Ladies The Fennimore Community Food Ladies came together as a group and figured out a way to help out with the increased food expenses for community members and families during the difficult time of COVID-19 Safer at Home Order. They began providing supplemental food at the end of March and adjusted their plans by forming additional partnerships. Members delivered food and meals weekly to over 50 families in the Fennimore Community School District. The Food Ladies, Fennimore School District, and Fennimore Food Pantry along with many individuals and businesses making donations, people volunteering their time, made it all possible. The Fennimore School District jumped on board as soon as they couldn’t deliver meals any longer and donated a substantial amount of food weekly. Businesses donated a lot of dairy items over several weeks to help feed people and support Wisconsin farmers. Additionally, several individuals and organizations made financial and food item donations, making this all possible. The Food Ladies delivered their last delivers May 29. As the Fennimore Community Food Ladies cease operations the Fennimore Community School District received a grant to deliver food weekly to homes, on Thursdays, during the month of June. Does Acupuncture hurt? Most of the time, no. There may be a small pinch or a zing when the needle is inserted but generally the sensation does not last more than a few seconds. Acupuncture needles are not like large hypodermic needles used in hospitals and clinics but are solid and much thinner. Most people feel very relaxed and some even fall asleep once the needles are in. (I usually think of my acupuncture sessions as nap time. ?) What if I’m afraid of needles? No problem!
