The modern pinning ceremony for nurses dates back to the 1860s with Florence Nightingale. Nurses make a difference in the lives and health of not only their patients, but also their communities. The Southwest Tech nursing faculty annually recognizes a healthcare professional who has shown exceptional service to the college’s nursing programs and its students. This year’s recipient, Karla Blackbourn, began her nursing career in 1974 after graduating from the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Madison. While working full time she went on to earn a BSN from Viterbo College and then her Masters of Nursing from Clarke College. Karla joined Southwest Tech in 2001 and taught hundreds of nursing students over the span of 17 years, retiring in 2018. She worked in rural nursing throughout her entire career and is especially passionate about working in the ER and OB. Thank you, Karla, for your commitment to the nursing program and for your dedication to enhancing the clinical experience for our students.
