Support Of Literacy For over 20 years, The Shopping News has sponsored the annual literacy contest of the Mu Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma. The annual competition is open to children in grades three through eight from Grant, Iowa and Lafayette Counties who are enrolled in public schools, parochial schools, and home schools. Awards are issued in two categories: Literacy (authorship) and Illustration.

An awards banquet was recently held to honor the winners, their parents and teachers. Each of the first place winners read their stories to the audience. Each child received plaques and trophies in recognition of their achievements at the local and state levels. This book is dedicated to my big brother Gavin for standing up for me, my mom & dad, to my other big brother Miles for always being there for me, to my teacher Mrs. Doyle for being a phenomenal teacher, and to Mrs. Bennett for encouraging students to write. “Ahhh! Stop it! Help!” cried Lilly. A few seconds later, mom came into the room. “What happened in here?” asked mom, annoyed. Gavin ambushed me again!” explained Lilly as she got up from the floor. Gavin was armed with his foam ninja sword, as usual, and snuck

away to try to avoid his punishment. It was the last day of summer vacation. The next day Lilly started second grade and Gavin started fifth. The summer was filled with bickering, ambushes, and lots of “He took this” and “She has that” and “He hit me” and mom’s favorite…, “It broke…!” Their mom told them stories about when they were younger and inseperable. The best of friends. It was hard for Lilly to remember a time when her brother wasn’t annoyed with her or try to attack her like the ninja he imagined he was. The first day of school was wonderful as Lilly knew it would be. She LOVED school and was happy to see her friends, meet her teacher, unpack her school supplies, and check out her new classroom. The day flew by and when the last bell rang, she got her stuff and waited in the spot where her mom told her to meet her brother. She waited…and waited…and waited. He did not come. Lilly thought he must have left without her because he did not like that their mom said he had to walk home with her. She knew the way, so she decided to walk home alone.

She was skipping home thinking about the adventures of the day when all of a sudden she heard a boy yelling at her. She looked up to see a fifth grade boy standing a bit in front of her. He was holding a stick in one hand and had some of the pebbles from the playground in the other. Lilly was scared! The boy started to call her names and walked closer. Then he started to throw some of the rocks at her. Lilly said, “leave me alone!” in the loudest voice she could muster. He laughed at her and said, “make me.” And then he started to throw the pebbles. Lilly quickly looked around to see if anyone was there to help her, but nobody was. She turned around and started to run away, but then he started chasing her. She was running as fast as she could to try to get away but she could hear him getting closer. She turned to look back at where he was and that’s when he hit her in the cheek with a stick. She was so scared that she tripped and fell down. Then she started crying. He came over to her and squatted down. He kep laughing and called her more mean names.

Then, out of nowhere, she heard a familiar voice. “GET OFF MY SISTER!” Gavin said in a deep and loud voice that Lilly had never heard before. He came out of nowhere! The boy jumped up right away and now HE was looking scared. Gavin said, “Don’t you EVER touch my sister again. Got it?” The boy nodded and ran away quickly. Gavin helped Lilly up and asked if she was ok. He gave her a tissue to wipe the blood off her face from where the stick had cut her. All Lilly could say was, “Thank you Gavin. You saved me.”

The Lost Teddy Bear First Place Literary - First Place Illustration State Honorable Mention Literary Clare Drefeinski, 12th Grade, Platteville High School Teacher: Mrs. Kies Dedicated to: All baby Bornhoffs There once was a very old teddy bear that lived in a cottage by the end of the woods. Next to all of the other newer toys, the old teddy bear’s patched seams and loose buttons showed like the Harvest Moon on a clear night. Nevertheless, the young boy who lived in the cottage played with the old teddy bear everyday. The boy would take a little red wagon full of toys out to the forest to play by the river. Together, they all would dance under the trees and end the day with a nice cup of tea before heading home. As soon as his parents kissed the boy goodnight, the wooden soldiers, dolls, and stuffed animals would creep out of the toy chest and play their own games. Despite the rips and tears, the other toys would always invite the old bear along with them on their adventures. The old bear would try his best to have a good time. He would laugh and sing. He would dance with the dolls and teach the new toys how to properly drink tea. But, he always came back to the cottage more worn out and thin than the night before. One day, as the toys sat in the little red wagon on their way through the woods going toward the river, the old teddy bear noticed a young butterfly. The insect’s wings were still wet from her time in the cocoon. Standing on the edge of a branch, she tried to stretch out her limbs to fly. The old teddy bear gasped as the beautiful butterfly plummeted toward the forest floor. Overcome by an emotion he wasn’t aware he had, the teddy bear jumped from the wagon to catch her. The bear’s weak legs crumbled under his weight, and he fell agianst a rock. His vision went dark for what felt like only the beat of a butterfly’s wings. When the old teddy bear awoke, he found that the wagon was gone. The bear crawled around the base of the tree to find the butterfly. After shifting through the leaves and brush the teddy bear found the crumpled wings caught in a thistle. Gently, he untangled the creature from its cage and brought it into the open. Tears slowly dripped down the bear’s nose when he realized there was no saving the beautiful butterfly. Shortly after, a fox came trotting up next to the old teddy bear. His fur was matted and full of mud. The animal‘s brilliant red coat was covered up by the harshness of nature. “Why are your crying?” The fox asked the bear. “This beautiful butterfly was trying to fly but she fell into the bushes. I tried to catch her, but I fell out of the wagon that held all of my friends. Now, everyone has left me and I couldn’t save the butterfly.” The fox flicked his tail and sat down next to the teddy bear. “Would you like to have tea with me? Would that help you feel better?” The old teddy bear gasped. He always had tea with the toys that wore pretty clothes or were perfectly painted. He didn’t know that others that looked like him enjoyed having tea. “I would love to!” the bear exclaimed. The fox brought out some tea cups and cakes for them on the forest floor. All afternoon they talked and visited. When the sun began to set, the fox asked the teddy bear, “Where did all of your stitches come from? And how did you lose your buttons?” The old teddy bear sighed and reluctantly answered his friend’s question. “This stitch is on my arm was caught in a branch of a tree near the river. The child was pretending I was a fellow knight helping him slay an evil dragon. This rip on my foot is from when I was chasing a frightened new toy who was trying to run away. She later gave me a new button. It’s this one right here, after I lost the old one in a baseball game with the child and his friends.” “Oh my!” the fox said, “That sounds lovely.” “Lovely?” the teddy bear asked. “But I am so broken and bruised. I have lost so much stuffing in my legs that I can no longer save pretty butterflies. My buttons do not match and my body is covered in patches.” The fox smiled and flicked his tail again. “Do you want to know why I am so dirty and mangled?” The old teddy bear nodded. “I am full of mud because I was never taught how to wash in the river. I am wrinkled because I was never taught how to hunt. My claws are broken and missing because I never learned how to climb a tree correctly.” “Why do you call my scars lovely? I don’t think I could say that about your missing claws.” “I wound give anything to be broken because of love.” Whispered the fox. Before the bear could reply, the child and his wagon of toys rolled down the path. They all cheered when they found the old teddy bear sitting underneath the tree. The child put the teddy bear back in his place on the wagon, promising they would all clean up when they arrived home. Before they rolled away the bear tried to find the fox, but all that he saw were small paw prints that trailed deeper into the woods.

The Long Lost Crown First Place Literary Ava Stader, 6th Grade, St. Clement School, Lancaster, WI Teacher: Stacey Stowe Julie Overton loved to read. Especially when it was about a royal family. Her favorite princess was Juliana Yasmin Elizabeth the Third. This princess went missing when she was a baby, but is still very famous because of the situation. Juliana was in danger by some people who arrived at the kingdom. One of the maids overhead them planning to kidnap the baby princess. When the king and queen heard this news, they decided to send Juliana to some friends in America where she would be safe. Ever since she was sent away as a baby, she was never seen of again. “Julie! Come in here for dinner!” shouted Julie’s mom. “Coming!” replied Julie. Her mom was so nice, but was just a little loud sometimes. Eva and James Overton weren’t Julie’s real parents, but she had known them since she was a baby because her parents had died when she was really young. So, she calls them mom and dad. Julie sat at the table talking about her day like she usually does, and enjoyed it. But tonight, all she wanted to do was read her book she got from the library titled Juliana Yasmin Elizabeth the Third, the Long Lost Princess. People claim that Juliana died, but others say she is still alive, just in hiding. Julie was determined to find out what happened to her. Julie looked at the time. “10:00 pm already!” She put the book down and went to bed. The next morning, after she got ready for school, she sat down and ate breakfast. While she was pouring her cereal, her mom came into the kitchen and said she wanted to tell her something. Mr. Johnson walked in as well, and they all sat down to eat breakfast. “I have seen you reading that book about the long lost princess for a couple of weeks.” said Julie’s mom. “And, I know you really want to find out what happened to her.” “Yeah.” said Julie. “The thing is…we know what happened to her.” “You do?” “Yeah, and you are going to be really surprised by it.” At this point, Julie was really nervous. “Princess Juliana Yasmin Elizabeth the Third is…also the same person as Julie Ann Overton.” “What!?!?!?!?!? You mean that the princess is me? On my gosh!!!!!! I can’t believe this!” I always thought that having the same name was kind of cool, but I didn’t expect this!” “In a week, you are going to go to your kingdom so you can have a proper coronation and so the people can meet their long lost princess.” said Julie’s mom. “So let me get this straight,” said Julie. “I am Princess Juliana and in a week, I’m going to go to my kingdom?” “Yes.” “How long will I be gone?” “About a month.” “You mean I get to miss school for a month?” exclaimed Julie. “Well…no, you wil have a royal tutor, and you have that month to decide if you want to live in your own kingdom and remain a ruler, or come back to America and live with us.” “So you mean I won’t be able to live with you anymore?” Julie was starting to get really worried. “We can’t live that far away. We have friends and family here,” said Julie’s mom. Julie had a question ever since she found out that she was a princess five minutes ago. “So my real parents are Queen Michelle and King Lewis?” Julie knew that King Lewis had died two years ago, and she was saddened, but she didn’t think she was affected by the loss of her actual dad. Six days later, Julie’s whole school had found out that she was a princess and almost every day her locker was full of gifts like candy, roses and balloons. She was still very shocked at the fact that she would be leaving tomorrow to go to meet her real mom and her people, and deciding if she was going to stay there. She wanted to stay there because she was made fun of at her school. But she wanted to stay with her adopted parents because she had known them since she came to America. Julie noticed all of othe books about the missing princess were off the shelves at the library. When she got home that night, she packed the rest of her belongings, ate dinner, and went to bed. (She had to get up really early if she wantd to get on the plane.) Julie was on the plane now, and was half-way through her flight. She got up at 3:00 a.m. And boarded at 7:00 a.m. Julie was more nervous to meet her mom than to face a country. Over the loudspeaker, the pilot announced that they would be landing in five minutes. Julie sighed, “Oh boy.” As Julie and her parents walked out of the airport there were five fancy cars with royal flags and cheering people. “I guess that’s our ride.” said Julie. As she was getting into the royal car, she just waved and smiled. There were dozens of people with cameras. They were yelling, “Princess Juliana, can you tell me what you have been doing during your years of non-royal life?” Julie just kept walking toward the royal cars. When they were pulling up to the castle, guards opened the giant gates. A giant banner was hanging up over the giant doors that said “Welcome back Princess!” When Julie went inside, there were loads of people. The queen, who was sitting on a throne said, “Everyone, this is my daughter, who I should have introduced to you years ago”…she set a gorgeous crown on top of Julie’s head. “This, my dear would be your long lost crown.” After about a month living at the castle, she decided to live at the castle forever, but was planning on visiting America in the summer. She loved her new life.

The Lost City of Gold First Place Literary Austin Reuter, 6th Grade, St. Clement School, Lancaster, WI Teacher: Stacey Stowe “Hello, my name is James Wilson and I’m 16 years old. I live in Arizona. Today I’m going to tell you my story of how I found 1,000,000,000,000 dollars in gold. It all started 5 days ago…“uhhhhh” I looked at my clock it was showing 8:52. Good thing it’s Saturday. I hopped out of bed and put on some clothes. I grabbed my coat and stepped outside for my morning walk. It was hot, about 97 degrees. Our house has a huge backyard with woods, plains, and a stream that went to a lake. I was walking by the stream and saw a huge hole in the ground. The hole had rocks surrounding it and a big rock half covering the hole. I ran back home to get my exploring gear. It took about 15 minutes but when I got back. I took a climbing weight and tied 50 ft of paracord to it and started lowering it into the pit. When it finally hit bottom, I had about 10 feet of paracord left. I really didn’t want to fall. I took the remaining rope and tied it to a strong tree limb hanging above me. “Ok, here I go.” and I slid down. I felt my feet hit the bottom and I took out my flashlight. I flipped my flashlight on and the beam hit rock. It kind of looked like a temple with paint on the rock. The beam hit a torch on the wall. I walked over to it to light it when a painting caught my eye. It was a doorway showing a room full of gold. Well, that was something to look at. I had just lit the torch when something unexpected happened. At once, every torch lit and I could finally see everything. The room was massive, at least 100 feet high with about a width of 300 feet and a length of 1000 feet. (You may be asking how I know this, well my dad is an archaeologist, so he taught me how to do this.) I looked around, but there was only two ways to go. One was up and out (unlikely) or through a door on the other side. I chose the door. When I got there, the door flew open. I’m not one to get scared easily, but when doors fly open and lights turn on, there is something wrong. I stepped through and more torches flickered to life. I walked down three different paths straight, right, and left. I chose to go left. I ended up at another cross road. What is it with the cross roads? Foward is the way I will go. I came to something that looked like a city. No weird torches. “Hello, anyone home?” I don’t know why I said that. It was more of an instinct. I walked into the first house, nothing. I walked into 5 more houses and got nothing. Finally in the 7th house, I found something of interest. It was an amulet. I picked it up not thinking and too late realized it was a trap. The door slammed shut and the walls started to move in on me. I was thinking of how to escape when I saw a hole in the floor. I had 2 options, 1 get crushed or 2 jump down a dark hole. I chose 2 obviously. I jumped. It was only 5 feet deep; just deep enough for me to stand in. All of a sudden, the walls went back to their original places. I climbed out and walked out the door. Never ever EVER will I take something from an old creepy house again. I keep walking until I tripped a trap again. That told me that I was getting close. The trap was simple. It shot 50 billion arrows but all I had to do was wait for them to run out. I kept walking and out of nowhere I got shot with an arrow and died. Well, not really. I just thought I died. It really did hurt a lot, but I still survived. I looked down at my shoulder. There was so much blood. I grabbed my med kit and broke off the arrow. I fixed my arm and stood up. “Owwwww!” I kept going. I had to find a way out. I finally came to a doorway. I put my hand on the door and pushed. The door started shining and opening. I stood back and the door swung open all the way. My jaw dropped. Inside was gold, lots of it. I walked in and saw I could walk that way. I kept walking. When I came outside, it was on a cliff by my house and it was almost night. I ran home so fast. I was soaked in sweat. I ran inside and told my parents my story. It took us 6 months to get all that gold out. I swear we became Fort Knox’s rival. I later walked through the temple exploring many times. Many times I almost got killed but that was the fun of it. This one time I fell into a snake pit and had to use a torch and a lighter to scare them away. Or another time where I had to disarm a bomb. But I had no idea how they even had a bomb. Many times I would find more rooms with treasure but I left it all for the next explorer to find this temple. If you find it remember explore at your own risk. I was lucky but you could be seriously injured or worse die.

The Missing Keys First Place Illustration Faye Schuette, 4th Grade, Mineral Point Elementary School Teacher: Paige Grimm This story starts not far away, in Appleton, Wisconsin. Kayla, who is 11 years old and has a sister named Mya, lives there. They are going on vacation because Kayla and her family want a break from the busy streets of Appleton. Kayla is really excited to go on vacation for two reasons. One, she is looking foward to all the quietness. Two, it is her family’s first time going to Florida! The bad part is the long, long, long and even longer car ride there. A couple of weeks ago Kayla begged her mom to take an airplane but her mom said it was too expensive. They are supposed to leave tomorrow. Before Kayla knew it today ended. Tomorrow came. Kayla and her family started packing everything into the car as quickly as possible. “Where are we going to stay tonight dad?” Kayla asked. “We are going to stay in a hotel in Iowa,” her dad replied. Kayla really hoped it wasn’t the hotel they stayed in when they went to Kansas. That hotel was horrible. Thankfully it wasn’t where they stayed at before. But this one still wasn’t good. After all of the dreadful days of Mya’s complaining and Kayla trying to find her “happy place” things were better. Not because Mya had started to act older and learned how annoying it is to the rest of her family but because Kayla and her family had arrived. “What do you guys want to do?” Kayla asked. “Well let’s go see you girls’ room and go to bed. It’s very late after the long drive here,” Kayla’s dad said. Kayla and Mya’s room was awesome. The only not awesome part was sharing the room with Mya. The next day they went to the beach. (Mya had been begging to go there.) On the walk there, Kayla was hoping for a hurricane to pop up out of nowhere. That was because she was so tired of the beach. Not that Kayla didn’t like the beach but it feels like they go there 1,000,000 times each summer. Kayla was waiting for them to leave the beach, and so, so happy when they did. They were about to go inside when Kayla’s dad couldn’t find the keys to the house! That’s when Kayla thought this was going to be the worst vacation ever! What if we have to spend vacation outside? Kayla thought. Kayla and her family searched and searched for about 12 seconds and then Kayla’s dad found the keys! But of course they were the wrong keys. They kept searching and searching and searching and searching until something happened. Everybody was sitting down and feeling very tired. “Dad why are you moving?” Kayla asked. “Because I am sitting on the keys to the vacation house,” her dad said sadly. After Kayla heard that news she started jumping up and down. “Why are you jumping up and down?” Kayla’s dad asked. Kayla didn’t answer. Once Mya figured out why Kayla was jumping up and down she started doing it too. “You found the keys to the house!” Kayla and Mya said at the same time. The whole family was celebrating after they got inside. And they had a great rest of their vacation. But before they knew it it was over. They were all ready to go home when their dad asked “Hey where are the car keys?” To be continued…

The Rocky Start First Place Illustration State Honorable Mention Illustration Ella Wilson, 5th Grade, Mineral Point Elementary School Teacher: Laura Heimsoth Hi, my name is Lilith. I am just starting middle school. I have a friend named Keith. I think this year is going to be amazing because my Mom said I could join a soccer team. My first practice is after school. I went to the store and got shin pads, socks, cleats, a soccer ball, and a bag. The night before the first day of school I got all of my school and soccer stuff packed. Beep beep beep! I woke up at 6:30 to my alarm clock. I quickly got dressed and grabbed breakfast. Then I was off to bus stop where I waited for Keith. When we got to school we found our lockers. I had trouble opening my locker but I didn’t think much of it. I looked forward to science and lunch with Keith. I already knew my favorite teacher was going to be Miss Susie; she’s the art teacher. When lunch rolled around, Keith and I were talking when Missy started glaring at me. She had never been very nice but she kind of always ignored us. We finished and went to science. The rest of the day went very slowly until school finished. Mom took me to the soccer field. When we got there the other girls on my team were talking. My coach was setting up with some cones. The girls didn’t acknowledge that I was there. A girl named Bella smiled at me. After a while the coach called us over. We started by dribbling and passing. We also did tic tocs and pull back turns. I wasn’t very good. i was really quite bad. To make matters worse, I still didn’t know most of the girls’ names. By the time my Mom picked me up I was very sweaty and frustrated. I got home and took a shower. The rest of the week was pretty boring. After school, I looked up cool soccer moves on my phone and then I went outside and practiced them. I was getting pretty good at soccer and I had my first soccer game that weekend but the girls on my team still didn’t trust me. The ref blew the whistle and my coach told me to go to left defense. We shouted our cheer and ran onto the field. I could feel my heart racing as the game started. For the beginning it mostly stayed on the other team’s side. Things were going okay. Until the last minute, the other player was dribbling towards me and I…freaked out! The girl was so much bigger than me. SHE SCORED! The ref blew his whistle and the game was over. We lost and it was all my fault. The other girls were really sad. Bella told me I had done my best and that girl was really tough to cover. The next week was horrible. Missy called me names and glared at me, my locker was getting harder to open, and I was still sad about the soccer game but I kept working. I was showing lots of improvements at practice. The next game came around and this time my team won. The girls on my team started accepting me. I asked the janitor to fix my locker. Now it works. I smiled and told Missy to go away and she stopped being mean to me. It looks like things have a way of working out. It was a rickety start, but perhaps it will be amazing after all.

The Big Problem First Place Literary - First Place Illustration State Honorable Mention Literary Kylie Breuer, 3rd Grade, Iowa-Grant Elementary School Teacher: Debbie Moen Hi, I’m Carter. I have a sister named Cate and we have one big problem! You see, we have secret powers! Here is what happened: about two weeks ago Cate and I were at the park when a weird wind came and the next thing I knew a fairy was in front of us. She said, “I am the power fairy and I will give you any power you want.” We told her we wanted the ability to change into animals. She said if I climb rocks I will turn into a lizard and if Cate goes into the water she will become an orca. We tested our powers right away. I climbed the rocks at the park and immediately turned into a spotted chameleon. It was scary but as I scampered over the rocks it was amazing! Next, we went to the lake, Cate jumped in the water and turned into a giant orca! She was nervous but as she swam she got faster and even swam to the bottom of the lake. Cate and I have tired out our powers four more times but have had to be careful that no one has seen us! That is where our problem starts. Our family is leaving for vacation tonight to Florida to go hiking and to the beach. Cate and I agreed that we will stick together to hide our power from our parents. It took 12 hours to get to Pensacola. We went straight to our hotel to unpack and get some sleep. The next day, we were up early to eat breakfast. Then, our parents said we were going to spend the day hiking. I was very scared because I knew rocks would turn me into the chameleon. Cate said she would help me but neither of us knew how to keep our parents from learning the truth! We got in the car and headed to Big Lagoon State Park. Right away I told my parents Cate and I were going to take the lead and explore. We rushed ahead trying to find a path with no rocks but soon it was obvious that wasn’t possible. Cate and I decided we had no choice but to tell our parents the truth about our powers. The crazy thing was that once we started telling them our story, they didn’t even seem to care or act shocked! It turns out the surprise was on us; our parents had also received visits from the power fairy when they were kids! Mom said she had the ability to change the weather. Dad said he had chosen the power to make food appear. Cate and I were shocked, we had never imagined our parents had powers of their own! It’s amazing how much being honest changed our vacation! Mom kept the weather beautiful, dad kept us well fed, and Cate and I got to explore Florida as an orca and chameleon. It was the most amazing vacation ever!

Poke’s Story First Place Illustration Ella George, 6th Grade, River Ridge Middle School Teacher: Wendy Whitney-Scherer Poke is a hedgehog. He really likes to sing and play. One day Oink, the pig started bullying him, because Poke would accidentally poke his friends. Oink was very mean to Poke, saying stuff like “he is a pokey meany,” and “his singing is bad.” Poke felt really bad about what Oink was saying. Luckily Poke had all his friends. His very best friend was Sniffles along with Pip, Hoot, Squeak and Quack the bear. The Story of Poke started on the first day of school when Mrs. Pink released the kids for lunch. Oink was standing behind Poke in the lunch line and Poke got pushed back and poked Oink. Oink has bullied him since then. After that at recess Oink was really mean to Poke saying things like “He poked me on purpose because he hates me.” but in reality he hated Poke because of one little poke. Then when they were getting on the bus, no one wanted to sit by Poke. They had heard the fake news. Poke sat by himself in the back of the bus. The very next day, at school, Oink was pushing Poke around in the hallways, and not letting him into the classroom saying, “We don’t want a poker in our class.” Mrs. Pink let him in when Oink sat down. In class Oink was sending letters to Poke with really mean things on them. After class ended, Poke showed Mrs. Pink, she asked if she could have the letter to show to the Principal, Mr. Pinecone. The next day at recess Oink was being really mean, he said “Poke is fat,” and “Poke is dumb.” The next day Oink, Mrs. Pink, and Poke got called into the principal’s office to talk about the bullying that had been going on. When Poke walked in with Mrs. Pink they were both kind of confused. When Oink walked in he had the look of fear on his face because he knew what he had been called in for. When everyone was there, including Mr. Pink (Oink’s dad) and Poke’s parents. Mr. Pinecone said, “We need to talk abou the bullying that has been going on. You son, Mr. Pink, has been bullying Poke. “I still do not know what this is about, but I hope I will find out today.” Poke and Oink what started all of this? Poke says, “I don’t know.” “Oink says, “Yes you do, you poked me at lunch on the first day of school.” Then he tells the story the rest of the way. After that, Oink got detention for bullying. When Oink was in detention he was very quiet. He did not have much to say after what happened. Poke never got bullied again.

Beneath the Light of the Blood Moon First Place Literary - Second Place Illustration First Place State Literary Alaina Curry, 5th Grade, Platteville Middle School Teacher: Katrina Hostetler Dedicated to the real Maddy and Jake. Thanks for all of the adventures that inspired me to write this story. Legend has it that on nights when the moon turns blood red, a cursed child will appear and danger will follow. That’s where I come in. I woke up in the middle of the night to the sound of my name being called. I opened my eyes and sat straight up to see the urgent face of a young girl. Dark, silky hair tumbled down her shoulders and scattered freckles covered her nose. There was a rebellious look in her striking, green eyes. “Who are you? What’s going on?” I sputtered. My head was spinning. “My name is Claire,” she replied. That’s when I glanced out my window and saw the moon was blood red! I gasped! Clare explained that my best friend, Maddy, and her brother, Jake, were in danger. We rushed to their house to warn them. They came outside when we arrived, but stopped dead in their tracks. They were staring past us. Standing in the distance was a werewolf! It had red, glowing eyes and fangs dripping with saliva. “Everyone, back up slowly,” whispered Claire. We silently retreated towards the house. That was until, SNAP! Jake stepped on a twig. The werewolf dashed toward him. “Uh guys? A little help over here?” uddered Jake. ‘HEY! OVER HERE YOU DEMON DOG!” I shouted. Here’s a quick life lesson: never yell at a werewolf. It lunged at me! I tried running, but it pounced and dug its claws into my arm! “Ahhh!” I screamed in agony. “ALAINA!” Maddy shouted. My vision was getting blurry. I saw the outline of someone throwing something that made the werewolf yelp and topple to the ground. There was a blinding flash and then darkness. I woke up coughing. My friends were standing over me. Maddy had thrown a rock at the werewolf allowing us to escape to our secret neighborhood hideout. Suddenly, Claire shreiked! “Everybody get up! NOW!”she insisted. My mouth went dry when I saw what was in the doorway. Its body was the size of two panthers! Its claws were basically steak knives. Each fang was three inches long and stained red. My muscles tensed. We backed up until we hit the wall. The monster sniffed the air. My bloody, torn arm was the target. I watched in horror as it slowly crept toward me, dragging its claws along the stone floor making an awful screeching sound, worse than nails on a chalkboard. No werewolf was ever as terrifying as this creature! My body trembled. I slid down to the ground. I could feel the monster’s hot breath on my face. It opened its massive jaw and I braced for death. But just then, Jake slipped something into my hand. It was an arrow. I knew what I had to do. It took all the strength I had left. I stabbed the monster in the chest! It roared and collapsed on the the ground. I was breathing heavy. My friends were pale and their faces beaded with sweat. “Wow,” Clare exhaled. “Yeah,” I managed. “Wow!” Exhausted, we fell asleep on the old couch in our hideout, while Claire gazed up at the blood moon wishing it would go away. “Wake up, guys! You’ve got to see this! shouted Claire. I had barely opened my eyes when Claire pulled me outside. The moon was back to its pearly white color. We had survived! We knew it was time to go home. As we reached the backyard, we turned around to thank Claire. She was nowhere to be found; she vanished into the night…until the next Blood Moon!
