water from it. Before drinking it however, you didn’t want to take a chance of getting sick, so you decided to boil it! And by boiling it, you were able to kill off harmful bacteria and other chemicals and you rehydrated yourself and all was good. You see, when we come down with a fever, it’s a definite sign that our body is attempting to fight something foreign, an integral part of the cell-mediated immune response. After we go through the “feeling sick” phase, our proteins begin coding for recognition of the initial invader, so the next time it shows up, our bodies recognize it quickly and attack it without us even knowing it. This part of the immune response is known as the humoral immune response, and it is responsible for making antibodies (this often takes 6-10 weeks). Ultimately the goal of the immune system is to fend off an invader and bring our body back to homeostasis, in other words, balance and normalcy. Not just as it was before, but stronger than it was before, and more
equipped with a larger, smarter army to fight better the next time an enemy decides to invade our space. As we continue to be in such unprecedented times with this invisible foe, it’s important to pay attention to guidelines, recommendations and instructions to limit our chances of contracting Covid-19, and to help reduce the transmission to others. The unfortunate thing with this virus, is that is has an incubation period that is so uncertain. Scientists believe that anywhere between 2-14 day we could be infected before exhibiting any symptoms. That’s the scary part as many people are walking around infected while in the incubation period walking and talking with others and not even knowing it. So, all I can say is trying to continue to honor and obey the guidelines put in place by our local, state and federal governments is essential. The next few weeks are going to be trying times and doing our part will matter.

Our best answer is that cloth face masks do not provide adequate protection for the user and are not a substitute for physical distancing and handwashing. We should be washing our hands frequently, avoid touching our eyes, nose and mouth, avoid being around sick people and practice social distancing, by staying home. Despite wearing a face mask, you may increase your risk if you aren’t practicing social distancing and washing your hands. Using cloth over other masks designed to protect the user may negatively impact the performance, fit or, operation of an “approved” mask.

If you must re-wear your mask before washing, wash your hands immediately after putting it back on and avoid touching your face. How Can I Get a Cloth Mask? There are no standard designs for homemade masks, but there are patterns and instructions online from hospitals and other organizations. If making your own mask, it should tightly enclose the area around the nose and mouth, from the bridge of the nose down to the chin, and extending onto your cheeks beyond the corners of your mouth, so no gaps occur when talking or moving. You should use mask material that is tightly woven but breathable and even consider a double-layer the fabric. Masks must be made from washable fabric. Choose a fabric that can handle high temperatures and bleach without shrinking or otherwise deforming. The mask should be able to handle moisture from breathing. Some suggested materials could be the outer and inner layer of tea cloth with a layer of microfleece to wick away moisture in between. Never use fiberglass or other materials that may harm your lungs. Use an accordion fold and a fat woven shoelace-type material to bind the sides. Use elastic straps that loop behind the ears.

I’d like to provide an update on our hospital’s ongoing preparedness efforts and assure you that we are working diligently to keep our patients, staff and community as safe as possible.
Every patient is screened for covid-related symptoms upon check-in at registration
Our incident command team was mobilized several weeks ago, which is specifically managing operations related to COVID-19: including but not limited to, preserving personal protective equipment, staffing management, patient and visitor logistics, education and communication for our staff and public. All of these areas are reviewed daily as we respond to this fluid situation and work to implement recommendations from the CDC and local/state health departments.
There is a lot that is being done locally and across the country to stop the spread. And as we learn more, we are adjusting and advancing how we provide care to our patients.
As a critical access hospital, accredited by The Joint Commission - we have safety policies, procedures, and plans in place. A level of preparedness is always there. When things like this ramp up, it’s then that we take additional steps to move forward. These type of situations are out of the norm, but I have confidence in our staff and the fact that they are skillfully trained to respond to many emergency issues. We have extremely knowledgeable clinical providers and the right safety procedures in place, and are working every day to prepare. Our staff has been well prepped on COVID-19 precautions and procedures. We have implemented procedures to care for the potential of COVID-19 patients while keeping our well patients healthy and safe in our hospital setting. We discuss and evaluate scenarios daily to assess our readiness to serve our patients and staff. We have implemented temporary visitor restrictions to limit people entering the hospital.

We, at the ADRC of Southwest Wisconsin, are committed, now more than ever, to providing the same services we always have. We will continue to provide all of our core services which include providing up-to-date information on services and resources available in your community. Information & Assistance (I&A) Specialists are still offering options counseling including providing information to assist people to make informed choices about long term care. I&A Specialists are also available to assist youth with disabilities transitioning from the school system and/or children’s programs to adult programs. We also continue to offer services to assist individuals in accessing long-term care programs, as well as, providing options to individuals looking at transitioning out of a nursing home. The ADRC will continue to be the place to call for information on home delivered meals and transportation for our counties (Grant, Green, Iowa, and Lafayette).
They can provide information and advocacy on a wide range of issues and assist with the application and/or appeal process for public and private benefits like Medicare, Social Security, Medicaid, Disability, Senior Care, Supplemental Security Income and Medigap Insurance. We also have a Dementia Care Specialist (DCS) on our staff who is ready to help anyone who is looking for more information or education surrounding dementia. The DCS is dedicated to helping families care for loved ones at home or even across the country. The DCS is also determined to better educate our communities in order to help keep our loved ones at home as long as possible. In addition, we continue to offer caregiver support services. “sick” from time to time, they tend to feel fine, develop a slight fever and sore throat, then comes the runny nose followed by feeling fine. It’s important to appreciate the order. As the body is invaded, the cell-mediated immune response (which can last 7-10 days on average) makes a person feel horrible, even SICK! But we need to appreciate that our body is actually healthy, doing its job by making the environment inhabitable through elevating basal body temperature (fever) to kill off the invader, and then ultimately excreting and getting rid of the intruder through the nose, mouth and unfortunately at times the other end! When we think of the organs and body parts associated with the immune system, the thymus gland, tonsils, bone marrow, spleen and lymph tissue I’m sure come to mind. However, the gut (large and small intestine) is one of the largest organs of the immune system.
