Tips for military families 1. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. You are never alone, there is a whole community behind you and your soldier. There are more veteran’s and military families in your area than you think. 2. Get involved in your unit’s Family Readiness Group. It’s a great way to get information, stay busy and find support from others who are experiencing the same stages of the deployment cycle. 3. Military One Source will be your best friend. Spend some time on the website and get to know your way around. There is so much good information on there and so many wonderful resources. 4. Every deployment is different and is going to have its own challenges. Communication is going to be one of those. Try to be extra patient, and understanding because it is hard to interpret meaning from a text message or email, it’s not the same as talking face to face.

Tips for helping military families 1. Call your local VFW or American Legion. The VFW helped us with Christmas but does more; they will welcome any support you can offer. The American Legion gave the girls G.I. Josh stuffed dog toys. They were amazing comforts to my girls, and I’m sure they would welcome community support as well. 2. You can also get involved in the FRG too, they are always looking for volunteers, and businesses to support military family events, and those who offer volunteer services to military families with soldiers who are deployed. Project Linus, made the girls comfort blankets for each of the kids who had a soldier being deployed. This is a group of volunteers who get together and spend their time tying blankets and making quilts. To learn more, to volunteer or to donate fabric or funds to support this organization, visit projectlinus.org 4. Know that a military family might not ask for help even if they need it. But little acts of kindness go a long way. A message on Facebook letting them know you are thinking of their family, helping to shovel their drive way, or mow the lawn… anything you can do is appreciated.

HOW A 12-MONTH NATIONAL GUARD DEPLOYMENT AFFECTED A LOCAL FAMILY

still remember the morning my husband, Finau, got the call. We recently had gotten a lot of snow and with more snow in the forecast, and with him being a member of The Wisconsin Army National Guard, we were expecting him to get called up for state duty. Instead it had been a call about a unit needing more engineers to fill out a deployment. I can’t say I was surprised he answered yes so quickly. When it comes to the Army, my husband answers the call without a second thought. That’s who he is, and I knew that about him before we got married. I also knew that deployments are part of the deal when you enlist, and as a family, we knew it would happen eventually. We were lucky to get a long lead time, which allowed us to get some extra projects done around the house and make a game plan for the year to come. Not every military family gets so much advance knowledge. Some get only a few weeks, and a few get even less than that. No matter how much time you have to prepare, there are somethings you don’t know you are ready for until there are no other options. Deployments are one of those things. Driving home from dropping him off was one of the longest drives of my life. There are so many emotions to process, and your mind races through everything you did to prepare as you wonder whether there is anything you missed. Then there is this realization at how long 12 months can really be. At the beginning this can feel overwhelmingly long. The first four to six weeks are the hardest. It takes time to get into a new routine. You can’t do things the way you did them before. I think I cooked too much for dinner for three or four weeks before I realized I was going to have to change the way I planned meals, because the girls and I just didn’t eat enough to make meal time as formal as it had been before. There were some really long days and even longer nights. Some days I wanted to cry out of exhaustion trying to be everything for everyone and doing everything by myself because I was too embarrassed to ask for help. Being a military spouse, you feel like you have to be strong for everyone, you have to be strong for your kids, you have to be strong for your soldier, you have to be strong for your in-laws and other military spouses. Asking for help doesn’t feel like it fits those expectations. When Christmas came around, I had done everything we normally do trying to make it as normal as possible. The tree was in its usual spot, we decorated it together while listening to Christmas songs, picked out a new special ornament, wrapped presents, made Christmas candy and peppermint hot chocolate. But it was just different.

My husband and I had talked about how the holidays were just weird. No matter how hard we tried, it was difficult to feel that normal joy that comes with the holidays. A few minutes after I had gotten off this phone with my husband, I received a call from the local VFW. They wanted to buy toys for the girls for Christmas. I don’t know if there are words to describe how grateful we were for that act of kindness. I will never know who recommended our family, but it really helped bring back a little piece of joy and reminded our family that there is an entire community of veterans and military families who know what it is like. There were other times friends and family reached out. When we started the deployment, I wasn’t sure I had my support circle ready. I felt uncertain about whom I could ask for help if I needed a babysitter or had an emergency. But the funny thing is, life still happens even when soldiers are deployed. Emergencies did come up, and I had to get out of my comfort zone and reach out to others for help on numerous occasions. We had friends from my husband’s home unit whom I was able to ask for help when I found some weird wiring I wasn’t sure about. Or when the derecho broke a ton of branches off the tree in our backyard – that time I called another family from our normal unit. I also had friends and family show up to help with juggling doctor’s appointments and school schedules, missionaries from our church help with yard work and friends come over to help me paint the living room and kitchen. It has ended up being a blessing, as we have made new friends, met other military families and felt more connected to our community. We also had amazing support from the school district and teachers; they were so patient and understanding with our girls who had some very hard adjustments to make. Deployments are so hard for kids. But

they handled it like champs. We were lucky we were able to video chat quite often and instant message almost every day. This helped the girls a lot, especially because as our oldest started to read, it was an extra opportunity for her to practice her sight words. As the time approached to pick up Daddy, we decided not to tell the girls the exact day. We didn’t want them feeling overly anxious and not getting good rest and being grumpy at school. I would just tell the girls “a few days” or “soon” when they asked how long it was. To make it a little extra fun, we decided to do a scavenger hunt, with Daddy as the surprise at the end. I started taking the girls for car rides weeks before we picked him up so the scavenger hunt wouldn’t feel suspicious. I printed some car trip scavenger hunts from Pinterest, packed a few snacks, and we left. The whole two-hour car ride, the girls didn’t suspect anything. We even stopped to get dinner and went to a park. That way we wouldn’t show up at the Armory and make it too obvious. When we finally pulled in the parking lot about five minutes before the bus arrived the girls started asking, “Are we picking up Daddy?” It was so nice to be able to say yes! Two of our girls literally giggled themselves tired in the car on the way home. Our oldest just wanted to stay up and enjoy her time with Daddy and made it all the way to the Platteville exit. The next day, our youngest tried to lock Daddy inside the house. We have been enjoying our family time. There is nothing more wonderful than a family being reunited. We have realized we are just one of many families who serve and sacrifice all over the state and our country. We’d like to thank all the wonderful friends, family, teachers, community members and organizations who have been so supportive of our family during this year. Your help and support were appreciated more than words.

The organization A Place for Mom, says pets provide a comfort system that produces measurable health results. Caring for pets and being around them can produce a chemical chain reaction in the brain that may help to lower stress hormones while also increasing production of the feel-good hormone serotonin. Also, a recent study from the Mayo Clinic, which looked at 1,800 people between the ages of 25 and 64 who had healthy hearts, found that almost half owned a dog. Having a dog was likely to spur hearthealthy behaviors, like exercising with the pet, eating well and having ideal blood sugar levels. Pets also provide emotional support and companionship that can help seniors feel more secure and happy. The National Poll on Healthy Aging found that, among respondents who had pets, 88 percent said their pets helped them enjoy life, and 86 percent said their pets made them feel loved.

Seniors considering getting a pet can explore the many benefits to doing so:  Reduce pain: A 2012 study published in Pain Magazine found therapy dogs provided “significant reduction in pain and emotional distress for chronic pain patients.”  Feeling of purpose: Caring for an animal not only stimulates physical activity, but it also can give seniors a reason to get up and go, which equates to a feeling of purpose.  Altered focus: Having a pet can help seniors focus on something other than physical or mental health issues and preoccupations about loss or aging, according to New York-based psychologist Penny B. Donnenfeld.  Increased physical activity: Pets require care, and that interaction can get seniors moving more than if they didn’t have a pet.  Improved health: Ongoing research from Harvard Medical School has found dog owners have lower blood pressure, healthier cholesterol levels and lower risk of heart disease than those who don’t own a dog.  Stick to routine: Caring for pets helps seniors maintain a routine. Having structure after retirement can be important to ward off risk of depression. Staying on top of feeding, grooming and other pet needs also can help prevent cognitive decline.
