The Richland County Chrysler operation was purchased in 2011. In 2019, Fillback purchased Blackhawk Motors of Prairie du Chien. The new owners of Hickory Grove Golf Course, Grey and Heather Norsby, were recently part of a ribbon cutting ceremony welcoming them as the new owners and also new members of the Fennimore Area Chamber of Commerce. Hickory Grove Golf Course is located at 14561 Hwy. 61 north of Fennimore. Norsby’s have done some remodeling to the club house and are busy preparing for the 2020 golf season. Hickory Grove bar is currently open Monday thru Thursday from 11am to 6pm. Friday and Saturday from 11am to 9pm. They offer daily lunch specials, Friday night Fish Fry and Prime Rib special on Saturday. Norsby’s are not new to the bar world,
having previously owned the Boscobel Hotel in years past. Greg and Heather reports both the Fennimore and Boscobel residents have been very supportive of their new endeavor and they plan to be very involved with everyone from the area. Few things remain standing after 86 years. Even fewer things serve the same purpose after all those years. The exception to that rule is the Red Room in Dodgeville, WI.

Located at 108 E. Merrimac Street in Dodgeville, the Red Room opened in 1934 on the heels of the end of Prohibition. Owned by Chet and Inez Kolinski, it was considered a modern and swanky joint. Subsequent owners included Ike Stoltz, Harry Forseth, Henry (Hank) Brennan, Bart Scarborough, Keith Bowers and Todd Rideout. Its not clear how the Red Room acquired its name. Lauri, however, has painted the grey walls with a pretty shade of red so that question seems to have been answered.

In 2001, Lauri URen purchased the building and the business from Todd Rideout. With 30+ years of experience in the food and beverage industry, it seemed natural that shed end up back at the Red Room. She had worked there with both Keith and Todd in addition to working at Narveys in Dodgeville. Her husband, Terry Lauffer, helps out in addition to her sisters, Kelly & Mary. Teresa (Graber) Brown is also a team member having worked with Lauri for many of those years at both Narveys and the Red Room. Even Lauris parents Richard & Elaine URen - help out when needed. Lauris niece, Katelynn Gordon, is learning the family business too. On Friday, October 13, 1950 the first edition of the Shopping News rolled off the printing press. The four-page edition featured display and classified ads from a car dealer, a grocery store, and a shoe store among others. Of those businesses, only one remains – Heiser Kathy Neumeister Hardware. Heiser’s advertised a gallon of Mautz Paint for $3.75 and it was available in ten gorgeous new shades! (Watch for a re-print of this edition on October 13, 2020.) Like those businesses featured in our first edition, the Shopping News has undergone many changes in these 70 years. We have had seven different physical addresses in both downtown Platteville and in Platteville’s Industry Park. Technology has driven countless changes in the way in which we produce and deliver advertising messages for our customers.
And while the nature of shopping and conducting business has evolved, it has never been more important to support our local businesses. Money you spend with a local business stays within our community. Those same businesses hire our friends and neighbors, sponsor our sports teams, volunteer for emergency services, support our Chambers of Commerce and re-invest in more ways than we can count. Divisions Now Open Darlington
is strictly done by volunteers.
The Wisconsin Main Street program was created in 1987, and is affiliated with the National Main Street Center. Applicants to the Wisconsin Main Street program must be organizations focused on downtown or urban commercial district issues. The organization must have paid staff and an adequate budget for carrying out activities ($40,000 in communities under $5,000 or $70,000 in larger communities). Participating organizations must complete regular reporting and meet annual attendance requirements to remain in the Wisconsin Main Street Program. Successful commercial districts don’t just happen. They need to be planned and nurtured. Their prosperity requires interest and action from many stakeholders who share a vision for the community. The programs are designed around The Main Street Approach®, which provides framework for downtown revitalization focused on four key points: Organization establishes consensus and cooperation by building partnerships among the various groups that have a stake in the commercial district. Design works to create a safe, inviting environment for shoppers, workers and visitors while preserving a place’s historic character. Economic Vitality works to build a commercial district that responds to the needs of today’s consumers while promoting economically profitable businesses and properties.
Darlington has a beautiful historic downtown district and we take pride in its preservation. We are so fortunate to have the renovated Driver Opera House and Driver Hotel located in the center of town which is also home to four businesses. To help increase tourism we also have added 2 more bird statues around town for a total of 4. These birds are sponsored and painted by local artists and businesses and are a fun and welcoming edition to our area. Thank you to all the local businesses retail and service, volunteers, friends, and stakeholders for working and supporting everything local. Stay tuned, good things will be happening in 2020!

Flooding Update of the Rountree Branch

The City of Cuba City had a very busy year in 2019. The Cuba City schools performed at a very high level, ranking in the top 10% academically in the state. In addition, two high school students became members of the City’s Downtown Task Force, providing valuable insight from the younger members of the community. Each city must update their Comprehensive Plan every 10 years. Cuba City has partnered with Redevelopment Resources of Madison and the process will be completed in early spring. The plan will be the course of action to foster continued “smart growth.” Cuba City has a new website designed to be helpful to residents, tourists and business owners. The website can be accessed at cubacity.org. In the spring of 2020, the Cuba City Police Department will welcome its first canine officer. Thanks to the generosity of residents and business owners, the new team member will begin training in late February. Suggestions for names are now being accepted at City Hall. The 18-unit Old School Estates apartments opened this past fall and is quickly nearing capacity. The facility offers underground parking and storage, as well as in-unit washer/dryers and an elevator. Two of the businesses in the McClainKaster Business Park expanded in 2019 - Kern Plumbing & Heating and Non Metallic Components (NMC). For NMC, it is their third expansion since the facility opened in 1998. Cuba City saw eight of its businesses recognized as “Best of the Best Award” winners. Voted on by readers of the Shopping News, many of these businesses are located in the city’s award-winning downtown. Also known as “Antique Avenue”, Cuba City’s downtown features 35,000 square feet of architectural salvage, primitives and farmhouse décor.

It’s hard to deny, catastrophic flooding events have been occurring with more frequency the past several years. In 2018, two separate events washed out the bridge that crosses the Rountree Branch Stream near Country Kitchen. The first of these washouts occurred on September 20th, when we received 3.58 inches of rain in less than 24 hours. Replacing the bridge after this event was a relatively straight forward process. Digman Construction brought in a crane and simply set and anchored the bridge back on its original abutment. This work was donated by Digman Construction – Bob, Chad and Jay. The second washout occurred just two weeks later, on October 2nd. During this second event we received 4.35 inches of rain, again in a very short amount of time. The replacement process following the second event was more complex, since the abutment on the south side of the stream was destroyed, requiring a redesign team which involved the City of Platteville, Delta 3, and Digman Construction. New pilings had to be designed, approved, and installed before the bridge could be reset. To help prevent future washouts, it was decided that the bridge should be installed higher than its original placement. As part of the city’s commitment to the Moving Platteville Outdoors Steering Committee that lead the $1.67 million trail paving and lighting project completed in 2016, the city periodically has the stream side studied to identify areas that need rip rapping. Just downstream from the bridge, a future improvement is
planned for 2020. Stream bank stabilization will be performed on the banks near Katie’s Garden. The bank will be reshaped to allow the installation of a permanent erosion mat which will then be covered in black dirt and vegetation planted to reduce future erosion. This project was made possible by a matching grant from the Department of Natural Resources in 2018. The DNR has identified streamside honeysuckle as a cause for streambank erosion. Platteville Community Arboretum volunteers have been working on this for two years now. Last fall, a PCA donor funded effort by the UW-Platteville Reclamation Club removed honeysuckle on the PCA Keystone property. That partnership has just been renewed and this spring the club will remove streamside honeysuckle replacing it with vegetation. While we can’t predict the future, these changes are a step towards helping to better protect the bridge and trail from future catastrophic flooding events. Our PCA team leaders, volunteers and donors reported several new areas of concern in the fall of 2019 and our city had Delta 3 working on a second study last fall. If Delta 3 determines any of these areas actually need rip rapping to protect the trail asset, the city will be able to apply for another DNR streamside stabilization grant to repair these areas in March 2020. The city is working with Delta 3 to finalize that determination because the grant is only available every two years, so timing is critical. PCA (and we are sure past MPO leadership group) is very appreciative of city’s due diligence in protecting the $1.67 million trail asset.

Platteville Regional Legion Park Event Center Chamber Sees Transition Platteville By Kathy Kopp, Executive Director of the Platteville Regional Chamber

Kathy Kopp, Executive Director of the Platteville Regional Chamber, is retiring from her position after nearly 27 years. Her last day is Friday, February 14th, 2020. The Chamber Board has worked diligently to assist with a smooth transition for the Executive Director position. After the search, the position was offered to Wayne Wodarz, a longtime Platteville resident. Wayne will assume the Executive Director’s duties effective February 15th. Through Kopp’s tenure at the Chamber, the community has seen a number of changes – more business development, tremendous business growth on the City’s east side and in the industrial park and the 4-lane Highway 151, to name a few. When Kopp first started in her position, Main Street was one-way and the east-side of the City was mostly cornfields. There were only two hotels. Some of the things activities that Kopp has identified as ‘most memorable’ have been when the Chicago Bears Summer Training Camp was held in Platteville every summer; hosting the Governor’s Gala kick-off event for the Wisconsin Sesquicentennial in 1998;
hosting the Vietnam Moving Wall in 2009; being part of the Veterans Honor Roll memorial that was dedicated in 2012; working on the development of Katie’s Garden, and hosting multiple episodes of the Discover Wisconsin program. Kopp noted that it is with mixed feelings that she is retiring, stating “I have met so many incredible people and made so many connections and partnerships that it has been a difficult decision to make. I truly loved what I do but decided it was time. My husband retired five years ago and has patiently waited for me to be done. We have family spread over several states and Canada and our priority will be to have more family-time. We are both Platteville natives, love our community and have absolutely no plans to move. We will both continue to be active in the community and maintain the many friendships we have.”
When Kopp first started in her position, Wayne Wodarz was the Chair of the Chamber’s Business Promotion Committee and continued to serve in that capacity for a number of years. Wodarz managed the former Spurgeon’s Department Store and then opened the Maurice’s Store which carried men’s clothing in McGregor Plaza and then worked in Dubuque at the Hohnecker’s Gift store for 16 years. For the past 5 years, he has been working at L&M Corrugated in Platteville as a staff accountant. Wayne is excited about the challenge of his new position and is looking forward to working with many people that he had previously dealt with. Wodarz stated that “in some ways, this feels like coming home.”

Inspiring Community, Inc. and the Legion Park Event Center committee are working together to see that Platteville has a brand new event center. In September ground was broken for a 5,760 square foot open span building. Designed to be accessible and affordable, this yearround community facility features heat & air conditioning, handicap accessible restrooms, potable water, a kitchen, and built-in wiring for sound and video. Nearly 300 individuals, families, businesses and organizations have contributed donations to make this center a reality. Mike LeGrand, manager of Eastman Cartwright reported “The construction of the Platteville Legion Park Event Center is moving along well with the completion of the framing & truss work by the general contractor Eastman Cartwright Platteville, LLC. Want to share pictures, have a program, and listen to music? A hearing loop and audio-visual equipment will work well for everyone. Landscaping and a cultured stone façade are the final features that will make this new event center an outstanding addition to our community.
