Never before have we been more aware of the need for respiratory therapists than during this global COVID-19 pandemic— a virus that can adversely affect the lungs. Respiratory therapists care for patients who have trouble breathing from a chronic respiratory disease, such as asthma or emphysema. They also provide emergency care to patients suffering from heart attacks, stroke, drowning, or shock. John Mason, Director of the Heart, Lung and Sleep Center at Upland Hills Health has ramped up the availability of respiratory therapists at Upland Hills Health. “We may be the only hospital in SW Wisconsin that has a respiratory therapist on site 2 / ,” Mason said. “The skills of a respiratory therapist are valuable to our hospitalists and nurses. t increases the uality of care they provide by speeding up the diagnostic and treatment process. freedom to live their lives as they choose. Yet, retirees fre uently find that managing money in retirement can be even more challenging than saving for it. And the “unknowns” can be scary lmost 0 of those who plan to retire in the next 10 years say they have no idea what their healthcare and long-term care costs will be in retirement. It was just a year ago that I was introduced as the new Executive Director of the Platteville Regional Chamber. Fortunately for me, I had several months to overlap with my predecessor to get ac uainted with staff, the Chamber Board of Directors, and key leaders who I would need to know for networking purposes. This allowed me the time to learn the basics of a job that would be ever changing, and more reactive than ever before. This was a very challenging time for me to take the helm of this organization. I want to thank all of you for the support shown to me, along with the collaboration of many, to assist me with planning, organizing, and doing the many activities and events we were able to safely provide our membership and the community this year. Our Board of Directors had many additional meetings to steer me and the organization in the best
way possible throughout this time. Although this was not the year I had expected, I am very proud of how my staff, our oard, our membership and the community worked together to get through the many challenges of COVID-19. Despite those challenges, there were many bright spots that gave me a great sense of pride. I hope that many of you found helpful information in our daily updates early on in the pandemic to find the loans and grants you needed to continue your operations. This took a strong effort from hamber staff to put together this information in as timely a manner as possible. We wrote many letters for our local businesses in support of the “We’re All In'' grants, which were awarded to most everyone we followed up with. We were also able to facilitate a few of our annual hamber events in a slightly different way, to promote safety, but still offer a chance to get out and enjoy. Some of these include Hometown Festival Week and our Annual Golf Outing. Both of these events were well received as they provided another reason to be outside and be social, while still practicing social distancing. The Travel Wisconsin Welcome Center was able to highlight outdoor recreation as a cornerstone of our tourism promotions. And record numbers took advantage! Our Farm to Family Dinner was modified to a Farm to Family Drive-thru with great success. And we
were even able to support a shop local Holiday event that was well received. It is overwhelming to think of the amount of time spent on planning and reworking many of the events we take for granted each year. There was a great deal of effort put in by many of our members and volunteers to make these things happen, to maintain our quality of life and give us something to look forward to. We couldn’t have done it without all of you! I am thankful for the partnerships and collaborations that have allowed our community to get through this challenging time. Our network of friends include (in no particular order staff from the ity of Platteville, Platteville Main Street Program, Platteville Area Industrial Development Corporation, Grant County Tourism Council, Grant County Economic Development Corporation, Southwest Wisconsin Chamber Alliance, University of Wisconsin Platteville, and the list goes on. It is amazing what can be done when you work together! And thanks to all of you for including the Platteville Regional Chamber in your communications and planning. There is still much I still need to learn in year two. And there are many events and happenings that I have not been able to be a part of yet. I am excited about the opportunities that 2021 will bring us and look forward to seeing many of you as we navigate through this with optimism. Thanks to all who have supported me in my year one journey! I look forward to working with many of you in year two! Happy New Year!

Southwest Health Investing in New Cuba City Clinic To meet growing needs and to ensure ongoing local access to quality care, Southwest Health will replace their current Cuba City Clinic with a new facility to be located on the south end of Main Street in Cuba City. Construction will begin in the spring of 2021, and the completed 8,500 square foot clinic building will provide patient-friendly spaces for primary care and rehab therapy services. Cuba City residents Lou and Sherri Schweigert have very thoughtfully chosen to facilitate this new state of the art clinic by donating two acres of prime real estate for the project. Their generous gift enables Southwest Health to build in an advantageous location that not only gives the clinic high visibility but also gives patients easy access. Says Lou Schweigert, “This move by Southwest Health will upgrade and expand services in their southern service area, and Sherri and I are delighted to support their dedication to the health of our area communities.” The current clinic location at Epione Pavilion has been home to primary care services since the mid 1950s, serving the communities of Cuba City, Hazel Green, Benton, Kieler, Dickeyville and the surrounding rural areas. Says Southwest Health CEO Dan Rohrbach,
“Southwest is highly committed to Cuba City and our southern service area. Our Board of Directors recognizes that to continue serving area residents in the best way possible, we need to make an investment to modernize those clinic spaces. “Our current location has served us well, but as we continue to grow and bring on more practitioners and services, we see very clearly the need to replace the aging clinic,” says Rohrbach. “In addition, the timing could not be better because the start of the Cuba City project will coincide with the completion of the new clinic addition now under construction on our hospital campus in Platteville.” Further solidifying the need for new clinic spaces are the recent additions of key healthcare practitioners. Family physician Zach Droeszler, MD, born and raised in southwest Wisconsin and a graduate of Southwestern High School, began seeing patients in Cuba City this summer as did Physician Assistant Chelsea DeMuth, PA-C, also originally from the area. Local resident and Physical Therapist Staci Graber, MPT, will also move into the new clinic spaces and lead a team of therapists at the new location. “ e are very fortunate to offer the
services of such strong medical professionals who are also from the area and personally dedicated to the patients under their care,” states Rohrbach. “Healthcare in this area has never been in better hands.” This decision on building a new clinic in Cuba City comes on the heels of establishing a partnership this last summer with Marquardt Management Services of Watertown, Wisconsin. Through the new joint venture, Southwest Health and Marquardt Management Services are investing in providing and expanding senior services to the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa and community members of SW Wisconsin through owning and operating St. Dominic Villa in Sinsinawa, Wisconsin. Cuba City Announces New Developments will host additional events as the pandemic restrictions are eased in the coming year.
Despite the obvious challenges of the past year, Cuba City is proud to be welcoming two new businesses to the City of Presidents, along with the completion of its Presidential Plaza project and the expansion of a key medical center. A new Walking/Bicycle Route is also currently being designed with the help of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and the input of Cuba City High School students.
Cuba City is also proud to welcome Spring Green, a national lawn care business to the Kaster-McClain Business Park. The Common Council recently approved the sale of 2 acres to the firm and construction of their facility will commence this spring. Owner Jason Jordan has owned his franchise in Rockford, Illinois for 23 years and they currently have a satellite facility in Platteville. Spring Green specializes in fertilization and pest control.

Quality Motors will be relocating from Benton, their home for over 9 years, to the former Runde Auto facility at 2496 HWY 80, across from Sloan Equipment. Southwest Health has announced that it will be
constructing a new Cuba City Clinic at the south end of Main Street. Southwest Health has been a fixture in the City of Presidents since the 1950’s and is excited about this development. Construction will begin the spring of 2021 and the facility will feature local staff including Dr. Zach Droeszler, a Southwestern High School graduate. The new facility will allow the Clinic to both upgrade and expand its current range of services. Cuba City has worked with the University of Wisconsin on three recent projects. This includes the Presidential Plaza design and grant application, the painting of the Plaza’s ground mural, and the design of a bicycle/ walking path in the City. All of these activities originated from strong input of the Cuba City High School student body. Further study by a UW-P Senior Design Team will be going on this spring in the hopes of obtaining grant funding in the fall. The High School has been asked to provide additional input on the final design for the path.

Lafayette County Public Health and Memorial Hospital of Lafayette County (MHLC) are working together to prepare for advancing to the next phases. Part of this preparation is determining who is interested in receiving the vaccine. We are asking individuals who are interested in receiving the vaccine to either register in the portal at www. memorialhospitaloflafayettecounty.org/vaccine (preferred method) or call Lafayette County Public Health at (608) 7764895, please only do one of these options. Be prepared to answer questions about your occupation, age and medical conditions. This information is needed to determine when you will qualify for the vaccine based on State and Federal guidelines. Where and when you will receive the vaccine will be determined at a later date Lafayette County Public Health will be reaching out to law enforcement and fire fighters this week as they are eligible for their vaccine starting Monday January 18th.
