Diabetes types Diabetes mellitus, commonly known as diabetes, is a metabolic disease that causes high blood sugar. The hormone insulin moves sugar from the blood into your cells to be stored or used for energy. With diabetes, your body either doesnt make enough insulin or cant effectively use the insulin it does make. Untreated high blood sugar from diabetes can damage your nerves, eyes, kidneys, and other organs. There are a few different types of diabetes: Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease. The immune system attacks and destroys cells in the pancreas, where insulin is made. Its unclear what causes this attack. About 10 percent of people with diabetes have this type.

Prediabetes occurs when your blood sugar is higher than normal, but its not high enough for a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes.

Most women with gestational diabetes dont have any symptoms. The condition is often detected during a routine blood sugar test or oral glucose tolerance test that is usually performed between the 24th and 28th weeks of gestation.

A rare condition called diabetes insipidus is not related to diabetes mellitus, although it has a similar name. Its a different condition in which your kidneys remove too much fluid from your body. Darlington, Wisconsin – 11/03/2020 - Memorial Hospital of Lafayette County (MHLC) is pleased to announce that it will begin offering optometry services in collaboration with Medical Associates Clinic, including a retail optical shop open five-days per week. “Providing eye care for the community has been something we’ve been focusing on in our strategic planning for the past few years. Our data shows us the need for adding these services, and we’re thrilled to have an opportunity to collaborate with Medical Associates Clinic Ophthalmology,” says Kathy Kuepers, CEO of MHLC. Like dental care, eye care is health care.
