Thank You for Preventing Underage Drinking in Stoughton
On Thursday, October 25th, 2018, Stoughton Police, in partnership with the Stoughton Wellness Coalition conducted alcohol compliance checks. The compliance checks focused on licensed establishments checking prospective consumers for identification and ensuring the consumer was of the legal drinking age of 21 years. Licensed establishments were sent an educational letter in September indicating that compliance checks were forth coming and included an ID checking guide.

Q. When should I begin training my puppy?
Q. Why does my dog chew his feet? A. Dogs chew their feet for numerous reasons, with the most common of these being underlying allergies to either food or environmental allergens. Anything can cause an allergic response, and reactions in dogs typically lead to itching, which often manifests as chewing on or licking the feet. Other causes of foot chewing include foreign material in the paw pads or nail beds, problems with the toenails, infection in the skin or pads of the feet, obsessive behavioral issues or pain. A trip to the vet is recommended in order to examine your dog’s feet, perform any necessary diagnostic testing, and determine the best course of treatment.

A. Decades ago people were told not to attempt training prior to six months of age. Now we know better. Puppies seven or eight weeks old can learn how to live among humans. One of my best puppy students began at seven weeks and finished training with distinction. If you begin early then your puppy can learn what is expected and not develop unwanted behaviors which are then harder to change. I suggest finding a reward-based trainer who reinforces favorable behaviors such as paying attention and responding to cues, and avoiding trainers focused on punishing unwanted behaviors. Inhibiting behavior is not the same as teaching desirable behaviors, and create risks of unwanted consequences like emotional instability and aggression. Another choice is whether to join a group class or seek individual training. Some of my clients found group classes too distracting and were unable to learn, although there was value in socialization. Individual training is more efficient in teaching a puppy what to do, but socialization occurs in the environment and so activities outside the home are required. It boils down to personal preference.
