Things to look for in a new job

The decision to change jobs is not always an easy decision and many professionals change jobs for various reasons. But regardless of what’s behind a career change, many people can benefit by looking for things in a new job that can make them happy both professionally and personally.

exception of people who work more than 55 hours per week, stress rises accordingly with the numbers of hours worked each week. Keep that in mind if your goal is to find a job that affords you a better work/ life balance.

Satisfaction: When attempting to achieve a better work/life balance, it can be easy to overlook satisfaction at work in exchange for more time at home. But studies have shown that feeling satisfied by what you do can have a profound impact on your overall happiness. It’s possible to find an engaging career that still affords you time away from work, and such a career can ultimately pave the way toward a happier life.

Look for things in a new job that can make you happy both professionally and personally. Salary: Of course everyone would love to earn more money when changing jobs, but there is more to changing jobs than just improving your bottom line. As you begin your job search, consider how much you currently earn and if that allows you to live a life you love. If so, don’t overemphasize finding a new job that pays considerably more than you currently earn. On the flip side, young professionals who want to start a family in the years ahead should consider the costs associated with such a decision and how the salaries they earn at their next jobs may affect what they want down the road.

Commute: Bending over backwards simply to get to work and then get home from work can have an incredibly negative impact on your life. A study from the Office of National Statistics in the United Kingdom found that commuters, especially those who spend between 60 and 90 minutes commuting to work, have lower life satisfaction and lower levels of happiness compared to people who don’t commute. Before accepting a job offer, estimate your commute time to and from the new office and try to determine the impact of that commute on your quality of life.

Many people aspire to find a new job at the dawn of a new year. Job seekers Work/life balance: Before beginning panies. Long hours often leads to burnout. fords you a better work/life balance. In 1940, W.J. Ayers started a family legacy. Beginning as a small hardware store in Ridgeway, Wisconsin, W.J.’s business grew to be so much more. He was soon joined by his brothers, Leroy and Gordon. In the early days, the Ayers store carried everything from hardware supplies and carpeting to appliances. As time passed, the store began to focus on furniture. Gone are the days of nuts and bolts. Today Ayers Furniture carries a beautiful array of furniture from quality companies such as Smith Brothers, TempurPedic, Sealy, Flexsteel, La-Z-Boy, England, and many, many more. The small store expanded over time with the purchase of a few of the surrounding buildings, reaching a grand total of over 52,000 square feet. The family grew too. In 1982 two of Leroy’s sons, Gerry and Anthony, joined as partners and took the lead as the second generation of owners. Rick, Leroy’s third son, joined the business in 1987. Today the brothers take pride in offering superior service and quality. Take the drive to Ayers Furniture; it’s really worth the trip.

How To Ace Job Interviews When Switching Careers

Millions of people change careers every year. Whereas professionals may have once worked for the same company for the majority, if not the entirety, of their careers, nowadays it’s not uncommon for men and women to change jobs several times before reaching retirement.

Even if you are changing careers because you’re unhappy and/or unfulfilled in your present line of work, avoid badmouthing that industry and your past employers. Doing so will only reflect negatively on you and raise a red flag with prospective employers. Instead, explain your reasons for pursuing a new career path in terms that excite potential employers about your candidate. The decision to change careers can induce both excitement and anxiety. Maintaining a positive attitude and employing various strategies when interviewing with prospective employers can help make the transition to a new career go smoothly.

Underscore the importance of the recommendation by making it a personal request. Schedule an appoint-

ment with the individual and discuss why you believe he or she would be the right person to provide the recommendation. Remind the person of your attributes and point out something that exemplifies your skills. Speaking face-to-face shows respect and gives you the advantage to make your points personally, rather than through email. Make the process easier Provide all of the necessary items to help the person along. This can include a brief résumé, academic progress report, required forms, and so on. Also offer any college- or employer-directed requests. As the deadline looms, offer concise reminders that you will need the recommendation. Offer to pick it up personally. Make copies or scan and save the original just in case a mix-up in the admissions office occurs. Recommendations are a key part of landing a job or being offered acceptance into a college or university. Asking the right people early will translate into recommendations that paint an accurate picture of applicants.

While it can seem counterintuitive for people with a lot on their plates to stop multitasking, researchers at the University of Utah found that performance suffers when people try to do more than one thing at a time. Vice President Woodward Community Media Do you find purpose in helping others achieve success? In this role, you will have many opportunities in which to do so. Employee owners will look to you to provide strategic direction, give them the information they need to be successful, and then empower them to think independently to serve our customers in the best way they know how.

Time it right. Many workers wait until they’ve become unsatisfied with their jobs to try to negotiate a raise, likely thinking that the higher salary will justify the stress or unhappiness they associate with their work. But workers may find it easier to discuss salary when they are happy and satisfied at work. Employers may sense your enthusiasm, and you’ll be more likely to focus on the positive rather than the negative aspects fueling your request.

those points with clear examples. Include past successful projects, your developing skill set, software experience, education, training, and anything else that boosts your résumé. Know your worth in advance. According to the book “Women Don’t Ask” by authors Linda Babcock and Sara Lashever, women frequently underestimate their worth, often reporting salary expectations between 3 and 32 percent lower than men for the same jobs. Find advertised positions that are similar to yours to determine the mean salary for your job, and request a salary that’s more in line with the going rate for your position.

Give yourself a confidence boost. Going into negotiations feeling grateful to accept anything is the wrong tactic. business and avoid personal reasons. You’re more likely to get the raise if you keep personal reasons (i.e. bills piling up, school expenses, family vacations) out of the mix. Maintain your professionalism during the discussion. Otherwise, you may risk losing your boss’s respect. Bring convincing materials. Have your “proof” in writing or in substantiated documents. You’ll need to be as confident as possible and having the right information on hand can help seal the deal. Double- or triple-check your info before the meeting. Negotiating raises can be nerve-wracking. But women should not hesitate to ask for compensation commensurate with their experience.

Local businesses will look to you to provide avenues in which to connect with their customers and community. Communities will look to you to provide relevant content and experiences to keep them informed and entertained and to actively engage in a leadership role within the communities you serve. Success will be achieved by actively engaging with employee owners at multiple locations and by developing relationships with business and community leaders alike.
