Choose U.S. Farm Fields Over OPEC, Oil Fields - USAgNet In response to this week’s announcement by the White House calling on OPEC+ member countries to increase oil output, the Renewable Fuels Association today sent a letter to President Biden supporting the Administration’s call for an investigation into the true causes of recent higher gas prices. The letter also underscored that the solution to higher pump prices is not more oil from OPEC+, but rather increased production and use of home-grown fuels such as ethanol. “Rather than hoping Iraq, Iran, Venezuela and other OPEC+ countries will provide the cure to escalating gas prices in the United States, we urge your administration to pursue a real and immediate solution to higher pump prices-increased production and use of low-carbon renewable

WCGA Seeking Entries for 2021 Corn Yield Contest

- Wisconsin Ag Connection The Wisconsin Corn Growers Association wants to recognize top-yielding corn production from farmers in four specific areas of the state once again this year by holding its annual Corn Yield Contest. Program coordinators say entry in the competition is free, but farmers must be members of WCGA and can only submit one entry per member. Cash prizes will be awarded for each of the winners in the Northern and Southern divisions, along with two specific divisions in Rock and Columbia Counties. First-place winners in each of the categories receive $500, second place is $250 and $100 goes to the third place winner. At harvest, corn yields must be verified for the contest by either a county agent or a professional agricultural consultant and can be confirmed by using a weigh wagon or truck scale. A harvest report form must be received by the WCGA office by December 17. A simple one-page entry form is available from the Wisconsin Corn Program Office by calling 262-372-3289.

USDA Modernizes Thrifty Food Plan, Updates SNAP Benefits - USAgNet -
The U.S. Department of Agriculture released a re-evaluation of the Thrifty Food Plan, used to calculate Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. As a result, the average SNAP benefit - excluding additional funds provided as part of pandemic relief - will increase for Fiscal Year 2022 beginning on October 1, 2021. As directed by Congress in the 2018 Farm Bill - and with the expressed support of President Bidens January 22 Executive Order - USDA conducted a data-driven review of the Thrifty Food Plan. The resulting cost adjustment is the first time the purchasing power of the plan has changed since it was first introduced in 1975, reflecting notable shifts in the food marketplace and consumers circumstances over the past 45 years.
’’A modernized Thrifty Food Plan is more than a commitment to good nutrition - its an investment in our nations health, economy, and security,’’ said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. ’’Ensuring low-income families have access to a healthy diet helps prevent disease, supports children in the classroom, reduces health care costs, and more. And the additional money families will spend on groceries helps grow the food economy, creating thousands of new jobs along the way.’’ In its re-evaluation, USDA was driven by the latest available data on the four key factors identified in the 2018 Farm Bill: current food prices, what Americans typically eat, dietary guidance, and the nutrients in food items. For example, the revised plan includes more fish and red and orange vegetables to align with recommendations in the Dietary
Guidelines for Americans, 2020-2025. Additionally, the plan was calculated using updated purchasing data collected from stores versus selfreported by households - to reflect the current price of foods in todays marketplace. The revised Thrifty Food Plan also includes a modest increase in calories to reflect the latest data and support an active lifestyle. The 2021 Thrifty Food Plan puts healthy food in reach for SNAP families. Recent evidence consistently shows that benefit levels are too low to provide for a realistic, healthy diet, even with households contributing their own funds toward groceries. A USDA study published earlier this summer found that nearly nine out of 10 SNAP participants reported facing barriers to achieving a healthy diet, with the most common barrier being the cost of healthy foods.

Horse in Monroe County Tests Positive for EEE

The animal, which was not vaccinated against EEE, was euthanized after showing rapid neurological signs. EEE is caused by a virus transmitted by mosquitoes, and may cause encephalitis, or inflammation of the brain, and is fatal to horses in 90 percent of cases. Symptoms in horses include depression, appetite loss, drooping eyelids and lower lip, fever, weakness, twitching, paralysis or lack of coordination, aimless wandering, circling and blindness. The virus is not contagious between horses, but can be carried by mosquitos from an avian, or bird, host to horses and humans. Last year, Wisconsin had more than a half-dozen cases of EEE, including one human death as a result of the disease.

National DHIA Scholarship Applications Now Being Accepted

- Wisconsin Ag Connection The National Dairy Herd Information Association is offering $1,000 scholarships to full-time incoming and continuing students at technical and two-year and four-year colleges/ universities. To be eligible for a National DHIA scholarship, the applicant must be a family member or employee of a herd on DHI test, a family member of a DHI employee, or an employee of a DHI affiliate. The DHI affiliate for the herd or affiliate employee must be a member of National DHIA. Judges will evaluate applicants based on scholastic achievements, leadership, community activities and work experience, experience and knowledge of DHIA, and response to questions on the application. National DHIA will award 12 scholarships. Applications are due November 30, with the recipients being announced at the 2021 National DHIA annual meeting. A recently issued study has found that Foot-and-Mouth Disease can be introduced to pigs through the importation of contaminated feed products for up to 37 days. However, the study found that numerous conditions must be met for the transmission to occur, including: the feed must first become contaminated with the virus; the virus in the feed must then remain viable until it is fed, and the quantity of infectious virus must be sufficient to surpass the minimum infectious dose; and at least one pig must consume enough virus to become infected over one or multiple feedings. The findings demonstrate the importance of increased biosecurity efforts to ensure FMD remain outside the United States. An FMD outbreak would immediately close all export markets to U.S. meat. The study was conducted by USDA’s Agricultural Research Service and funded by the Swine Health Information Center and the National Pork Board.

Augusts 2021/22 U.S. corn outlook is for lower supplies, reduced feed and residual use, increased food, seed, and industrial use, lower exports, and smaller ending stocks, according to the USDA World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report for Aug. 12. Projected beginning stocks for 2021/22 are 35 million bushels higher based on a lower use forecast for 2020/21. Reduced exports are partially offset by greater corn used for ethanol, starch, and glucose and dextrose. Corn production for 2021/22 is forecast at 14.8 billion bushels, down 415 million from the July projection. This months 2021/22 foreign coarse grain outlook is for lower production, slightly lower trade, and smaller stocks

The outlook for 2021/22 U.S. wheat this month is for reduced supplies, lower domestic use, unchanged exports, and decreased ending stocks. The NASS Crop Production report forecast all wheat production at 1,697 million bushels, down 49 million from the previous forecast. Most of the reduction is in Hard Red Winter and Soft White Winter.

Scientists Make Moves to Alter Weed Control - USAgNet -
The International Weed Genomics Consortium announced a new multipronged initiative to advance the genetic sequencing of the world’s most troublesome weeds. The organization is genetically sequencing 10 new weed genomes and is hosting an international conference and training workshops focused on weed genomics. Members of the Weed Science Society of America (WSSA) are among the broad global community of experts involved in the effort. ’’Our goal is to use genomics to fundamentally alter the world’s approach to weed control,’’ says WSSA member Todd Gaines, Ph.D., an associate professor at Colorado State University and a founder of IWGC. The Foundation for Food & Agriculture Research (FFAR) recently awarded a $1.5 million grant to IWGC to help the organization expand and accelerate

Industry Groups React to Infrastructure Bill - USAgNet -
The U.S. Senate passing a $1 trillion infrastructure bill has brought mixed reactions from members of the ag sector. The bill passed in the Senate with a bipartisan vote of 69-30, which included 19 Republican senators supporting the legislation. It provides funding for roads, bridges, rail transit, broadband and other infrastructure projects. The bill still needs to pass in the House of Representatives before President Biden puts his signature on it.

Several senators from the Midwest have signed a letter to President Joe Biden and members of his cabinet requesting a meeting to discuss climate and energy solutions.

There are eight major breeds of swine that are commonly raised in the United States. Different breeds are better used for specific applications. Producers typically raise breeds that best fit their needs based on its qualities and physical characteristics. Berkshire: The third-most recorded breed of swine in the United States, Berkshires are known for fast and efficient growth, reproductive efficiency, cleanness and meat flavor and value. The first U.S. meeting of Berkshire breeders and importers was held in 1875, with the American Berkshire Association formed shortly after – making it the oldest swine registry in the world. Chester White: Chester Whites originated in Chester County, Pa., from which their name was formed. These white hogs with droopy, medium-sized ears are known for their mothering ability, durability and soundness. Packers also tout their muscle quality. Duroc: The second-most recorded breed of swine in the United States, the red pigs with the drooping ears are valued for their product quality, carcass yield, fast growth and leangain efficiency. They also add value through their prolificacy and longevity in the female line. Much of the U.S. breed improvement has occurred in Ohio, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and Nebraska.
Hampshire: The hogs with “the belt,” Hampshires are the fourth-most recorded breed in the United States. Most popular in the Corn Belt, Hampshires are known for producing lean muscle, high carcass quality, minimal backfat and large loin eyes. Females also are known for their mothering ability, with longevity in the sow herd. Landrace: White hogs with droopy ears, Landrace are the fifthmost recorded breed of swine in the United States. Known as “America’s Sowherd,” Landrace females are heavy milkers and often farrow large pigs. Crossing well with other breeds, Landrace often possess length of body, a high percentage of carcass weight in the ham and loin and the ideal amount of finish. Poland China: In the early 1800s, Poland China hogs originated in Ohio. Today, Poland China hogs are known for their large frame, length of body, leanness and muscle. They also are excellent feeders, gaining well under good care and management. They also are quiet in their disposition. Spotted: The Spotted swine breed is characterized by large, black-and-white spots. Many breeders in central Indiana specialized in breeding Spotted hogs through the years. Today, Spots are known for their feed efficiency, rate of gain and carcass quality. In addition, commercial producers appreciate Spotted females for their productivity, docility and durability.

11/2 pounds lean ground pork 3/4 cup mushrooms (thinly sliced) 1/4 cup green onion (thinly sliced) 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1 teaspoon worcestershire sauce 2 teaspoons butter 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 8 1 clove garlic (minced) In medium skillet, saute mushrooms, onion and garlic in butter until tender, about 2 minutes. Combine ground pork, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper; mix well. Shape into 12 patties, about 4 inches in diameter, set aside. Spoon equal portions of mushroom mixture onto center of 6 pork patties. Spread to within 1/2 inch of edge. Top with the remaining 6 patties; seal edges. Place patties on grill about 6 inches over medium-hot coals. Grill 10-15 minutes, turning once, until an instant read thermometer reads 160 degrees F. Serve on buns, if desired.
