Meet An Area Farm Family:
The Wiedenbeck Family - Story and photo by Wisconsin Beef Council -
Located in the casting hills of Grant County, Wisconsin, Tammy and her brother, Doug, are 7th generation beef farmers. While they both work off of the farm in addition to raising livestock, the Wiedenbeck family emphasizes that correct cattle care and handling practices are the first step in a successful cattle farm. All 5 adult family members are Beef Quality Assurance Certified in order to help maintain excellent cattle care. The Wiedenbeck family knows it takes many hands to ensure day-to-day operations on the farm run smoothly. This multigenerational farm depends on each family member’s dedication and passion for the beef community to sustain from one year to the next. Ranging from 72 years old to 19 months old, the Wiedenbeck family takes pride in producing safe and high quality beef. The Wiedenbeck Farm utilizes a tool called a Nutrient Management Plan to supervise their care for the land, the environment around them and the cattle on their farm. This plan sketches a path for farmers to follow when it comes to manure management, crop production and more. The Weidenbeck farm continues to be sustainable by using the manure produced by their cattle to enrich the land and soil where their crops are planted. In the fall, those crops
"For my family, our business began before Wisconsin was even a state. In 1836, our farm was land granted to John Edwards, my 3 great grandfathers uncle. I, Tammy, and my brother, Doug, have begun the farm transition process with our parents Dick and Rhonda Wiedenbeck, making us the 7th generation on the farm. Doug is now married to Stacy, and has 4 kids, AJ, Luke, Vada, Charlie and David. The farm has evolved from a dairy operation, to hogs, and now we have beef and crops. The love and passion we have for what we do is in the land and in our blood. It's our farm, our family, our future." TammyWiedenbeck

Wisconsin beef farmers utilize this cycle in order to be as efficient and resourceful as possible. “We know the land gives back when we take care of it,” said Doug. “The land will forever be our most valuable asset on the farm.” Tammy and Doug say their passion for raising beef animals began as young children when their local FFA Alumni Organization aided them in purchasing their own heifers to show at the county fair. Today, Tammy and Doug relay the same passion they had growing up to Doug’s 5 children. “They are excited to learn and we are excited to teach them something that has been such an influential part of us” Tammy said. Doug and his wife Stacy take every opportunity they can to teach their children about agriculture. As future farmers and future consumers of Wisconsin beef, the Wiedenbeck family feels it is extremely important to tell their story and history of the farm. Tammy volunteers with her local Wisconsin Farm Bureau District and leads a committee of strong farm women to continue to advocate for beef farmers. From raising cattle to kids, the Wiedenbeck family is proud to feed families across Wisconsin wholesome and nutritious beef.

1 pound bacon (sliced) 8 slices whole wheat bread 6 eggs 11/2 cups milk 1 cup cheddar cheese (shredded, 4 ounce) 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard Cut strips of bacon crosswise into 1/2-inch pieces. Cook bacon in skillet over medium heat until crisp; blot with paper towels. Discard accumulated bacon fat. Remove crusts from bread, and reserve for another use. Cut bread slices into cubes; set aside. In a large bowl, beat eggs, stir in milk, cheese and mustard. Gently stir bacon and bread cubes into egg mixture; spoon into buttered 8-inch square baking dish. Cover tightly and refrigerate overnight. Remove from refrigerator and let stand at room temperature for 15 minutes. Bake, uncovered, at 325° F. for 45 minutes or until knife inserted midway between center and outer edge comes out clean.

Farmer to Farmer Website Links Buyers to Sellers www.fyi.extension.wisc.edu Wisconsin farmers in various parts of the state experienced severe alfalfa losses this past winter resulting in forage shortages in combination with already low inventories. Additionally, a cooler and wetter than normal 2019 spring season caused delayed plantings for many Wisconsin farmers. As a result there may be an interest in selling or buying agricultural commodities from areas with surplus feed inventories to areas of the state in need of forages according to Mike Ballweg, University of WisconsinMadison Division of Extension Sheboygan County crops and soils agent.

The Farmer to Farmer Forage and Corn website – probably best thought of as an electronic neighborhood bulletin board – allows local farmers to get in touch with one another. The website facilitates the marketing of feed commodities where livestock producers in need of high moisture corn, corn silage, hay, or straw can easily contact sellers that have feed commodities for sale. For example, those late planted acres may serve the dairy and livestock industry well, utilizing late planted acres as silage or high moisture corn, while reducing costs for corn grain growers associated with drying, storage, transportation
“This site has been an excellent way for buyers and sellers to get in-touch locally. Neighbors often within short distances have been able to buy and sell as a result of the website”, says Ballweg. “All transactions and negotiations are handled directly between buyers and sellers.”
The Farmer to Farmer website facilitates making the connections. The site is developed and supported by UW-Madison Extension and can be found at: https:// farmertofarmer.extension.wisc.edu/. The website is free of charge for both buyers and sellers. Users can search for, or list for sale, hay, haylage, straw, high moisture corn, corn silage or corn grain. Buyers can search for farmers in just one Wisconsin county or in any number of counties at once.

www.wisconsinagconnection.com About 17,000 dairy operations across the United States have signed up for the Dairy Margin Coverage program since sign-up opened in June, with Wisconsin leading the nation in the total number of enrollees. On Monday, the USDA announced that 4,832 of Wisconsin's 6,719 dairy operations opted into the program, which replaces the former Margin Protection Program. "We're encouraged by the number of dairy producers who have signed up for this new program, but we are hopeful that we will get more folks in the door," said USDA Under Secretary Bill Northey. "At this point in the signup process, we are well ahead of the number of producers covered at this time last year under the previous safety net program, with more producers enrolling every day. As we move into the homestretch, we expect more producers across the country to get coverage through DMC and our team at FSA is really going above and beyond to make sure we get the word out there, the returns this year to-date should speak for themselves." The DMC program pays dairy producers when the difference between the all-milk price and the average feed price falls below a dollar amount selected by the producer. It provides catastrophic coverage at no cost, other than an annual $100 fee that may be waived, and offers higher buy-up coverage. Northey says more than 60 percent of U.S. dairies have enrolled in the program, so far. Other leading states include Minnesota with 1,865, New York with 1,779, Pennsylvania with 1,511, and Michigan had 702 signups.

Line a rimmed baking sheet with waxed paper. Place flour in a medium, shallow bowl. Lightly beat eggs in separate medium, shallow bowl. Combine the bread crumbs, garlic powder and cayenne pepper in another medium, shallow bowl. Dredge cheese curds, a few at a time, in flour. Then dip in eggs; coat with crumb mixture, shaking off any excess coating between steps. Place coated curds on prepared pan. Lightly spritz curds with cooking spray just before placing into air fryer basket. Arrange curds in a single layer in the basket. Refrigerate remaining curds until frying. Set timer for 5-7 minutes. Fry curds, removing basket at 3 minutes; flip curds. Cook 2-4 minutes longer or until light brown, crispy and the curds begin to melt. Repeat with remaining curds, starting with a light spritz of cooking spray. Serve in a bowl or parchment-lined basket with dipping sauces.

Pork Mentorship Program www.pork.org The Wisconsin Pork Association Mentorship Program is a one-year program for college students with a passion for agriculture and interest in the swine industry. Participants will expand their knowledge of the swine industry through hands-on experiences and job shadows, involvement in pork industry programs, and partaking in Wisconsin Pork Association activities. The program, which has a strong focus on Visitcareer development, will provide opportunities to network with pork industry leaders, identify future career goals, and create valuable connections with potential employers. Applications for the 2020 program will be available in fall 2019. Who Can Participate? The Mentorship Program is geared towards college-age students with an interest in agriculture and/or the swine industry. You don’t need prior experience in the pork industry to apply! You must be a Wisconsin resident and enrolled full-time at a post-secondary school. What Will I Do? Throughout the course of a year, you will be immersed into the pork industry by participating in pork industry programs, activities and job shadows. We give you an entire year to complete activities to accommodate your college class schedule and other commitments. Some
activities you’ll participate in include: • World Pork Expo: Join over 20,000 pork producers and industry professionals for the world’s largest porkspecific trade show. The event also includes educational seminars for producers and training courses for swine industry advocates. • Pork Schoppe at the Wisconsin State Fair: The Pork Schoppe has been a staple at the Wisconsin State Fair for over 30 years. The Pork Schoppe is a fundraiser for Wisconsin Pork Association where we serve delicious pork sandwiches to fairgoers. • Job Shadows: Learn first-hand about the employment opportunities the swine industry has to offer. Dr. Charles Heidenreich first left his mark on the University of Wisconsin-Platteville when he joined the university in 1966 to teach and help grow Pioneer Farm. Now, more than half a century later, Heidenreich’s impact on the university’s agriculture programs is continuing to grow thanks to a $250,000 endowed gift. On Tuesday, Aug. 27, Heidenreich’s gift and contributions to the agriculture program will be honored in a ceremony to dedicate the Charles J. Heidenreich Swine Education Area at Pioneer Farm. Heidenrich had an unwavering passion for the study of livestock, which drew him from his position at Purdue University to UW-Platteville. “My mom still likes to relate the story about his decision in 1966 to leave Purdue University,” said Heidenreich’s daughter, Cheryl Rowan. “Then Dean Earl Butz, who later became the Secretary of Agriculture under Presidents Nixon and Ford, told him ‘No one leaves Purdue University.’ But Dad did, in large part, to develop the newly acquired acreage which has become the Pioneer Farm.” Heidenreich was influential in growing Pioneer Farm. Most notably, he was the driving force behind the development of a facility to raise hogs in confinement, which was a relatively new concept at the time. He also brought horses to Pioneer Farm and taught courses in horse production and horsemanship. He was instrumental in bringing the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association’s rodeo to Platteville for two years in the mid 1970s. After retiring from UW-Platteville in 1990, Heidenreich moved to Fredericksburg, Texas. He passed away in November 2018. “My mother and our family are honored to name this space and create an endowment fund to honor the legacy of Charles J. Heidenreich and his service to the university and the state of Wisconsin by continuing to support the education of future generations of students who, like he was, are

The fund will also support a stipend for a student worker position in the swine facility at Pioneer Farm. “The generous gift from the Heidenreich family, in memory of Dr. Charles Heidenreich, will enrich the educational opportunities for students pursuing swine and livestock education in the School of Agriculture,” said Dr. Rami Reddy, director of UW-Platteville’s School of Agriculture. “This is a great gift that will support student employees who are learning by doing, while working at the Pioneer Swine Center and enable several recruitment activities, undergraduate research opportunities, and hands-on projects. This gift will boost the operational efficiency and support the development of the swine education program. We highly appreciate the kindness of the Heidenreich family and it is fitting to dedicate a swine education area in the name of Dr. Charles J. Heidenreich at the Pioneer Farm in his memory and to keep the legacy of his service to the university and community.” The dedication ceremony was held on Tuesday, August 27. Total milk production for Wisconsin fell for the third consecutive month in July when compared to year-to-year figures. According to the USDA’s monthly milk production report, state output totaled 2.6 billion pounds during the month, down one percent from July 2018, but more than June's 2.57 billion pounds (which had less days on the calendar). The Wisconsin Farm Bureau Foundation is offering grants up to $100 each to pre-school through high school teachers, in a public or private school system, to fund projects that promote agricultural literacy in the classroom. Grants can be used for innovative lessons, activities, projects, resources, presentations, school fairs and other projects. Projects should focus on integrating agriculture into a variety of curriculum areas. Priority will be given to applicants for resources that will last more than one school year as opposed to funds for field trips, consumables and ‘one-time’ use. Grant Selection Criteria: A judging committee will review all funding requests that are properly completed and postmarked by October 15, 2019. • Multiple teachers from the same school may apply but the applications must be for different projects and activities! • Completed applications must be typed or computer-generated • Font size should be no smaller than 10-point. • The application may be reproduced using word-processing software only if line/page spacing is not altered. • The application should not exceed two pages. • Five copies of the application should be submitted (the original can be signed and four copies made of it) Items considered when evaluating the applications: • Quality and uniqueness of the agricultural lesson, activity or project
• Integration of agriculture into a variety of curriculum areas •A lignment with Wisconsin Model Academic Standards •A ssessment methods used to evaluate student’s knowledge •Q uality and completeness of application The proposed project must be targeted to grades Pre-K-12 and should enhance student knowledge of the contribution made by agriculture. Projects that use funds toward an ongoing, sustainable education effort will receive preference over those that involve a ‘one-time’ program. Proposed projects or events designed to reach large groups of students will be given preference, as will those that involve innovative approaches to promoting agricultural literacy.
