Q. My 10 year old daughter was recently diagnosed with a slight
scoliosis. Is there anything that can be done to help correct this? A. The cause of scoliosis is not completely understood, however, there are chiropractic and massage therapy treatments that work to facilitate a more normal spinal development. Scoliosis is a condition seen in 3-5 of every 1000 children and affects girls between the ages of 10-16, seven times that of boys of the Jill Unwin, Lee Unwin, same age. Chiropractic treatment involves adjustments of the vertebrae that are DC, CCEP BCMT, CSCS turning or twisting, essentially assisting the bone in a more normal developmental process. In conjunction with this chiropractors will prescribe certain strength and flexibility exercises. These exercises are designed to strengthen the weak side of the spine and create flexibility on the tight side of the spine. This helps create a better balance in the muscles, which again helps in the spinal development. Massage Therapy can also be beneficial for scoliosis. Massage Therapy works to release the muscle on the inside or concave side of the spine in order to reduce the tension of the muscles that are pulling the spine. Early detection is key to preventing years of suffering, however if a scoliosis is determined you must act immediately to help hold the line on its development. If you have concerns about your child’s spine please contact us for a free screening.
A. Physicians often send patients to Physical Therapy when there is a slight tear of the meniscus rather than opting for a surgical repair. Some people think that Physical Therapy involves only exercise. Strengthening and stretching exercises can be extremely beneficial during PT sessions, but there are many other types of treatment that will decrease inflammation and pain, promote tissue healing and repair, and improve mobility while protecting the injured joint during the healing process. Infrared light, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, myofascial Susan Armstrong, MPT release, lymphatic drainage and the use of kinesiotape would be likely choices to promote an optimum healing environment in the joint capsule. Once the pain and inflammation Physical Therapist are decreased, the range of motion and strength will then improve with exercises. A home exercise program with self-help instructions would be provided and progressed as tolerated. This program would be appropriate for a variety of injuries to soft tissue, cartilage, tendons, ligaments and muscle. Q. Are grain-free foods a problem in dogs? A. Some grain-free dog foods have recently been linked to a type of heart disease
in dogs called dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). The exact cause of the DCM in dogs eating grain-free food is not known. Important point: most dogs that eat “grain-free” foods do not develop DCM. Most of the “grain-free” implicated products are kibble and contain no corn, wheat, soy, rice or other grains but do contain peas and/or lentils (and sometimes potatoes, including sweet potatoes). The type of protein in the food does not seem to be important. If your dog is on a grain-free food (has peas, lentils, Dr. Barney Smith other legumes, or potatoes listed as one of the first 10 ingredients), your best bet is to switch to a food that contains grains until we know more. If your dog already eats a food that contains grains (even if peas, lentils, etc. are also ingredients) you should have not concerns, with we know now. For dogs that have food allergies, your veterinarian can help you find an appropriate food.

These acids attack tooth enamel to cause decay, especially when daily brushing does not remove the bacteria (plaque) and acids. Sugary drinks provide the food source for these bacteria. A general rule to remember regarding sugars and carbohydrates is that it’s not just the volume of sugar that matters, but also the contact time that the sugars/acids have with teeth. In other words, one glass of juice every night can be worse than 4 glasses in a single day. Brushing and flossing is the most important step in preventing tooth decay but diet is a very close second and in young children may be the key to preventing tooth decay.
