Verona Area Chamber Of Commerce www.veronawi.com Letter from the VACC Executive Director Letter from the VACC President Although the Verona Area Chamber of Commerce did not expect or welcome the surprise that arrived in the form of Covid-19 last Spring, we were pleased with how we were able to adjust to the adverse circumstances to serve the changing needs of our members. We kept our focus on our goal of providing leadership in key areas that benefit both our area’s commerce and quality of life. We consider these as both interdependent and inseparable. Our guiding philosophy is that a strong local economy is key to having a community with an enhanced quality of life. And conversely, a vibrant community is an essential support for area businesses. These became more challenging in 2020, but by thinking outside the box and by using virtual platforms, through social media, website posts, print ads and contests, we worked with various businesses to promote their products and services. We kept an up-to-date page of current hours, temporary closings, etc. for the public. Above all else everyone had to learn new ways of doing things they had done the same way for years, thinking outside the box for new ways to reach their consumers and staying flexible with the ever-changing guidelines. We kept our members aware of the various grants and loans available and assisted many in completing the documentation needed to apply for the grants. Each month we provided online no-cost Professional Development programming for our members. We offered and continue to schedule a variety of topics on Social Media, Building Your Brand, cutting costs in the pandemic, LinkedIn, Google Business, Yelp, Branding and more. Although we were unable to hold our popular networking lunches this last year, we will be beginning them again as soon as we safely can! We will also be rescheduling many of our other networking events for summer, fall and winter. We are also preparing for those hours our members and their families do not spend on the job and are motivated by the importance of offering opportunities for play and relaxation that make living here as good as working here and working here as good as living here. We have great plans for the return of our all our community events including Fall Festival, Main Street Trick-or-Treat, and Music on Main, the Spring Egg-stravaganza, Concerts in the Park and the Live Reindeer. These events have all been added since 2017 and combined with our long-standing events -- Hometown Days and Hometown Holidays draw tens of thousands of people each year. Of course, day-to-day the Chamber is primarily focused on ways to stimulate economic growth by developing ideas and programs that benefit our business members and promote business success — and which ultimately lead to job expansion and increased revenues. With this in mind -- and with the lifting of the Covid Cloud – we are prepared and eager to resume in person monthly Networking Lunches, informal Business After 5 networking events, Professional Development programming with our Business Before 9 and Lunch & Learn Speaker Series and provide many other member benefits. The Verona Area Chamber of Commerce and its members are committed to the continued enhancement of all things Verona. By patronizing the member businesses listed in this directory, you are saying “thank you” to the merchants, trades people and professionals who help keep Verona vibrant, while also helping to complete a vital circle that ensures continued committee to the community. The Verona Area Chamber of Commerce is a partnership of businesses and professional people working together to build a healthy Verona economy and to improve the quality of life in our community. Its mission is to proactively promote, support and enhance economic growth and community well-being. The Chamber fulfills many roles - economic development and planning, tourist information center, business advocacy, economic counseling, referral service and more. Some of the Chamber’s objectives are to help businesses prosper and grow, to increase employment opportunities, to contribute to the overall economic stability of the community, and to promote tourism. Each year it sponsors or plays a part in dozens of events, programs, forums and services. Whether you are new to Verona or have been here for years, the Verona Area Chamber of Commerce invites you to become a member. Newcomers bring a variety of perspectives as well as fresh ideas to the Chamber, and veteran Verona organizations and businesses bring valuable local experience to the Chamber.

Who Are the Chamber Members? The Chamber’s

members include businesses, associations, organizations, nonprofit groups and individuals. When you join, you’ll be in good company. The Chamber has ended each of the last ten years with more than 300 members.

W ho L eads the Chamber? Its members run the

Chamber. Members elect a twelveperson board of directors that decides policies and sets goals. The executive director is Le Jordan.

Volunteer Committees Member participation in volunteer committees and Chamber activities is welcomed but it is not a requirement of membership. Current Chamber committees include:

Chamber Ambassadors. The Chamber Ambassadors are the Chamber’s front line in terms of outreach, member relations and event assistance. The Ambassador’s goal is to bring the Chamber to the members. Business Education. Acts as a liaison between businesses, school administration and the students in the Verona Area School District. Involved with resource partnerships, career exploration events and other efforts. Economic Development. Serves as a forum for discussion of current economic development issues affecting Verona and the business community. Marketing and Promotion. This committee is dedicated to the marketing of Verona as a destination for tourists as well as the promotion of local events. Discusses issues and creates events with the goal of promoting Verona as a shopping destination and in helping plan and promote special community events like Fall Fest, Hometown Holidays and Music on Main.

Why Support the Chamber? To Promote Your Business All members receive a free listing

in the annual Membership Directory and Community Guide, which has a circulation of more than 10,000 and is distributed to every household in the 53593 zip code. Members may use space at the Chamber office located at 120 West Verona Avenue to display their company’s literature. The Chamber gives out member referrals requested from phone calls, walk-ins, and email inquiries received at the Chamber, and sends out tourist packets and relocation packets upon request. Members also receive a page featuring their logo and describing their business on the Chamber website, veronawi.com, and a link to their website from the Chamber site.

Verona History & Fun Facts T he Town of Verona was officially established by the Wisconsin Territorial Legislature in February 1847. What is now the City of Verona was incorporated as a village in 1921 and became a city in April 1978. O n April 1, 2008 city and town residents took to the polls to decide whether to merge the two communities into a single City of Verona. While the measure passed in the city of Verona, it was defeated in the township. T he town is named after Verona, New York, hometown of early settlers George and William Vroman. V erona High School’s first senior class graduated in 1901. Their class motto was “Labor Conquers All.”  I n the early 20th Century, Verona’s downtown featured four grocery stores, including one where you could also buy a Harley Davidson Motorcycle. V erona is the hometown of former U.S. Senator Wayne Morse, who represented the state of Oregon in the U.S. Senate from 1945 until 1969. Morse was elected twice as a Republican and twice as a Democrat. He once set a record for the longest filibuster in Senate history, and he was one of only two senators to vote against the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. V erona’s nickname is Hometown U.S.A. because it was selected by a detachment of fighting men in Vietnam in July 1966, as “the perfect example of Hometown, U.S.A.” V erona is the hometown of two Olympic gold medalists. Speed skater Casey FitzRandolph is a three-time Olympian (1998, 2002 & 2006). He won gold at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics Games. Swimmer Neil Walker earned a gold and a silver medal in Sydney 2000, and a gold and bronze medal in Athens 2004.

Verona is a vibrant and growing city that has much to offer residents, visitors, and businesses alike. Even as Verona has grown, we’ve kept our sense of community and our Hometown feel. Below are some of the highlights of what our community has to offer. Verona has stellar public facilities including an impressive library with Sunday hours during the school year, a popular senior center, numerous park shelters, and a beach located at Fireman’s Park. The Verona Area School District provides quality education and is home to the Verona Performing Arts Center and Natatorium. Verona is located at the intersection of two regional trails: the Military Ridge State Trail and the Ice Age National Scenic Trail. These trails run through the heart of our city and provide access to natural settings with bicycle and walking connections to neighboring communities. Currently, parts of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail are under construction as part of a utility project, but we expect to rebuild and restore the trail even better than it was. In the meantime, please excuse our mess. Also, the trails go by many great Verona businesses, so it’s easy to get off the trail to grab a cup of coffee or a bite to eat. Verona has several venues located around the city including Reddan Soccer Park, the Verona Ice Arena, and Ceniti Park. These athletic facilities offer great recreational opportunities for our residents and attract thousands of visitors to our community each year. The Verona Area Community Theater also has an excellent facility with many entertaining shows. Additionally, Verona is a great place for business, including great restaurants, breweries, specialty stores, manufacturing facilities, and the intergalactic headquarters of a major healthcare software company. In sum, Verona is a wonderful community whether you are searching for a home, looking for a place to eat, enjoying a sporting event, grabbing a drink, or searching for a location for a business. The Town of Verona was established in 1847. While much has changed as the Cities of Madison, Fitchburg, and Verona have grown, the Town of Verona remains a place that our residents are proud to call home. The Town has a population of just under 2000 people who choose to live in the Town of Verona because of its rural beauty and close proximity to employment and commerce. The Town of Verona has a showpiece Town Hall located at 7669 County Highway PD, and the Town strives to have an open and interactive governance. We hope people will take the time to enjoy a drive or bike ride through the Town’s countryside; hike on the Ice Age Trail or maybe even canoe the Sugar River. Residents of the Town enjoy a high quality of life away from the stresses that can come with city living and strives to be an important part of the region while retaining its own small community character. General City Information T he City of Verona is governed by a part-time mayor, who is elected at large, and eight part-time alders who are elected by district. Within this organizational structure, there are many volunteer committees, boards and commissions. T he city has about 80 full-time employees. T he City Council has five standing committees each comprised of three alders. The standing committees include Finance; Personnel; Public Works, Sewer and Water; Public Safety and Welfare; and the Senior Citizens Committee.  I n addition to the City Council committees, there are several commissions and boards that are comprised of members of the public along with representatives from the City Council. T he mayor is elected to a two-year term. The members of the Common Council are elected to alternating two-year terms, four in even numbered years and four in odd numbered years. The Common Council meetings are the second and fourth Monday of the month at 7 p.m. at City Hall and the Planning Commission meeting is the first Monday of the month at 6:30 p.m. These meetings are televised on VHAT Local Access channel and are available online at the City’s YouTube Channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/ VeronaWIMeetings). T he city’s administrative staff and the Verona Police department are housed in the City Center building at 111 Lincoln Street. The 43,000-square-foot complex is also home to the city’s Municipal Court, Common Council and Plan Commission.

In addition to food assistance, BPNN provides legal advocacy to prevent homelessness, a free community meal every 1st and 3rd Saturday, nutrition education and culinary events, and on-site access to a Joining Forces for Families social worker. They also provide free space to the school district’s transition program to help young adults with disabilities successfully move from the school environment to an independent life as an adult. Ironman Wisconsin Triathlon/Verona Loop Festival

www.ironmanwisconsin.com For both viewers and participants, one of the best places to get caught up in the excitement of the Ironman Wisconsin Triathlon is the Verona Loop Festival where masses of fans line North Main Street to watch the bicycle segment of the race. The Verona Loop Festival features food provided by several high school sports teams and serves as a fundraising activity for area youths while providing a safe and convenient place for fans to root on the athletes. Shuttle buses run between Madison and the festival during the day. The Ironman Triathlon is one of the most grueling events in the world. Competitors swim 2.4 miles, bicycle 112 miles and complete a 26.2-mile marathon. They have 17 hours to complete the event. They get plenty of encouragement as they pedal along Main Street in Verona.

Verona Hometown Days

Parks & Recreation Walter R. Scheidegger County Forest

608-224-3730 | www.danecountyparks.com The Walter R. Scheidegger County Forest is a public recreation area on the Town of Verona’s south side (on Range Trail). Scheidegger was a Verona High School graduate who willed $534,420 to the Dane County Park Commission. Public access to the nearly 80-acre site began in the summer of 2008. It offers a mile loop of hiking trails, a shelter available for reservation, group camp, restroom, and drinking fountain. The area has been restored from a former Dane County Sheriff shooting range to a managed forest of primarily oak and hickory. The shelter, kiosk, and bathroom were all built from wood harvested onsite.

Badger Prairie Dog Park

608-224-3730 | www.danecountyparks.com Badger Prairie County Park, northeast of the city at Old Highway PB and US Highway 18 & 151, is home to a three-acre pet exercise area, play fields, an aeromodelling field, mountain bike and hiking trails, a shelter, and a playground area. It serves as the center of the Ice Age Trail Junction Area and has access to the Military Ridge State Trail as well as a segment of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail. This 9-acre, fenced, offleash dog park is known for being clean and well-maintained. Includes an agility area with two jumps and a tunnel. Please note permits are required for park use.

Prairie Moraine Park & Dog Park

The 160-acre park is ideal for viewing the moraine and provides an excellent area for interpretation of Wisconsin’s glacial history. Prairie Moraine Park is often called the best dog park in Dane County, Wisconsin. There are many paths available, so you can go a different route each trip and there is plenty of space to run. Disposal bags, benches, and picnic tables available for humans. Dogs will love the grassy meadows with big hills, prairie grass, and beautiful wild flowers (in season). The entrance to Prairie Moraine is reached by taking US Highway 18/151 to County Highway PB; the entrance is two miles south on County Highway PB.

The Goodman Aquatic Center

Goodman Jewish Community Campus in Verona, 7762 County Rd PD, Verona, WI 53593. The pool’s six 25-meter lanes make it great for lap-swimming, and its zero-depth entry make it accessible to everyone, including small children and those with wheelchairs. When you’re out of the water, the pool’s shaded area and deck chairs offer a great place to lounge with friends and family, while enjoying a variety of delicious concessions available daily. The pool has a salt-water generator, making the pool better for the environment and for swimmers. This generator allows the use of salt, a natural element found in the earth, as a sanitizing agent, instead of relying on large amounts of liquid chlorine. Existing facilities include: year-round indoor skating and hockey at the Verona Ice Arena; outdoor skating, next to the arena in winter; walking/jogging paths; a picnic shelter; restrooms; drinking fountains; Verona Little League Park with 4 lighted fields; a concession stand; Stampfl Baseball Field; 2 baseball/softball fields; soccer fields; a skate park; and off-street parking. Mountain bikers looking for adventure can access the Military Ridge State Trail from the park, ride about two miles east of the park to Fitchrona Road and look for one of two trailside entrances to Quarry Ridge Mountain Bike Trail, featuring a single-track loop with technical trail features for beginner and expert riders.

Donald Park

608-224-3730 | donaldpark.org Donald County Park is in Dane County just 15 miles southwest of Madison. It is situated south of Highway 92 between Mount Horeb and Mount Vernon. Donald Park is part of the Dane County Parks system. Donald County Park’s 781.5 acres of natural areas and rolling topography provide many opportunities for outdoor activities year-round. The park includes 8.5 miles of multi-use trails which can be used for horseback riding, hiking, skiing and snowshoeing throughout the park. You will find a variety of habitats, including woods, pine groves, restored prairies, streams, natural springs, a pond and rock outcroppings.

These programs are recognized among Wisconsin’s best in player development and have had skaters go on to play for college teams, junior teams and even the NHL. The facility also plays host to the Dane County “Learn to Skate” program, birthday parties, hockey leagues and tournaments, hockey and figure skating camps, and senior, lunch and no-school day skates. Verona Little League Baseball-Softball Complex 608-848-4770 • veronalittleleague.org Thanks to the generosity of hundreds of volunteers and businesses who have given gifts of time, materials and money, the Verona Little League (VLL) opened one of the premier Little League Baseball and Softball complexes in the state in 2006. Ceniti Park at 601 East Verona Avenue includes four diamonds as well as batting cages, bleachers, a two-story concession stand and the excitement of a big-league park. Over the last seven years, VLL has hosted many district and state tournaments and will hold the Mid-Summer Classic tournament again this summer bringing in teams from around the state. Ice Age National Scenic Trail

The Ice Age National Scenic Trail is one of only eight national scenic trails in the United States. Primarily for foot travel, it showcases Wisconsin’s world-renowned glacial features. The Verona Segment of the trail takes wayfarers on a six-and-onehalf-mile trek that travels through farm fields, woods and prairies, along Badger Mill Creek, past glacial kettle ponds, and through Badger Prairie County Park with acres of prairie flowers and grasses.

Parks & reCreaTion The Ice Age Trail is a thousand-mile footpath — entirely within Wisconsin — that highlights these Ice Age landscape features while providing access to some of the state’s most beautiful natural areas and is intended for such low-impact activities as walking, backpacking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The serpentine course approximates the last stopping point or terminal edge of the most recent continental glaciers, which ended their last major surge 14,000 to 16,000 years ago.

The packed limestone trail is open for hiking, bicycling, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and motorized wheelchairs. Parking is available in several spots, including at Hometown Junction on Main Street. On summer Sunday mornings, it is common to see people pedaling about six miles from Verona to the unincorporated town of Riley for a pancake breakfast. The trail, in Iowa and Dane Counties, connects Dodgeville and Fitchburg. Most of the trail follows the former Chicago and North Western Railway line. Bicyclists at least 16 years old must have a current Wisconsin State Trail pass or a daily pass to use the trail. If you would like to purchase a trail pass through the Friends of the Military Ridge State Trail, email Passes@militaryridge-trail.org. All money collected stays local and is used on the trail. Passes may also be purchased at Miller and Son’s in Verona and at the Verona trailhead.

The 40-acre 15-field complex plays host to league play, camps, coaches’ clinics, State Olympic Development programs, training by local colleges, State Cup, and Midwest Regional League play. The watershed (an area of land that drains into a marsh, stream, river, lake or groundwater when it rains or snows) is 170 square miles of rolling farms, bustling communities, private retreats, parks and other public lands waiting to be explored. Its watershed resources, particularly trout fishing, have been featured on television and radio. Many of its 115 miles of streams are open to the public through non-profit efforts and national, state and county support of public fishing easements and trail development. A great family canoe and kayak water trail begins just outside Verona.
