Exploring Water, Nature More information and maps at grantcounty.org/tourism With two coasts, you’re never far from the water in Grant County. The mighty Mississippi and Wisconsin Rivers form over 90 scenic miles of natural borders to our north and west. Fishing, kayaking, boating, tubing, swimming, or camping on the beach are a few ways to enjoy the water. But that’s just the beginning. Our unique landscape is home to over 100 miles of world class trout streams. Join anglers from around the country as they wet a line. Between the Lower Wisconsin State Riverway and Upper Mississippi flyway, there’s always a spot to see a variety of animals near our shores.

Grant County is home to the “Most Scenic Campsite” in all of Wisconsin, according to a 2020 Reader’s Digest ranking. Wyalusing State Park offers 2,700 acres of spectacular scenery overlooking where the Mississippi and Wisconsin Rivers converge. This park features a canoe trail, hiking, caves, bluffs, Native American burial mounds and more. Plus, Grant County is home to Nelson Dewey State Park. Just off the Great River Road outside of Cassville, it features an abundance of wildlife so you can reconnect with nature. Inland, cyclists of all skill levels can find the right path for them with more than two dozen area bike loops that comprise the 900+ mile Driftless Challenge.

& The Driftless Area “Wow!” That’s the first thing most people say when they first visit this region closely followed by the question, “Why is this so different?” Well welcome to “The Driftless”. The answer to your question goes back some 10,000 to 12,000 years to the last great ice age. Glaciers were pushing down from the north that were leveling and scouring everything in their path…except for what you see here. The glaciers spared this area which preserved our hills and then the waters they unleased as they receded carved the steep valleys you see today.

Today “the Driftless” covers over 24,000 square miles in a four state area. That’s three times larger than the Black Hills in case you were wondering. The Mississippi River carves through the center of it all but that’s just the beginning. There are literally thousands of miles of streams and rivers waiting for you to discover them. And the cool spring fed streams make for a trout fishing paradise. The hills, the valleys, the waterways, even the vegetation make a stunning and beautiful region like nowhere else. Every weekend and lots of weekdays too. Festivals, Fairs, Food and Family Friendly Fun! Our events calendar has over 160 listings in an ‘average’ year. Well, we all know that the term ‘average’ has taken on a new meaning lately. But our community leaders, volunteer organizations and local businesses are finding ways to meet those challenges while still providing memorable experiences for the whole family. While we can’t predict the future, we know how to be flexible while enjoying every opportunity to celebrate everything that makes life in Southwest Wisconsin so special. That’s why we encourage you to check our website at grantcounty.org/events for the most up-to-date information as we adapt to changes as they happen. Takes a little more planning on your part and ours but the results will be worth it. So what should you be looking for?

How about mushrooms? The Morel Mushroom Festival is scheduled for Saturday, May 15th. And what’s June in Wisconsin without dairy breakfasts. That leads to thoughts of ice cream, cheese curds, and a host of other dairy products. Heck, we’ll even throw in some popcorn at Rural Route 1 in Montfort. Get more than a few folks living nearby and darned if a party doesn’t break out…and you’re invited to join in. Try the catfish at the festival in Potosi or maybe celebrate our mining heritage in Platteville or railroad history in Woodman. What’s going on at these shindigs? Well, lots of things if you base it on the names for the events. There’s Big Days in Montfort, Fun Fest in Fennimore, the Car Cruise in Cassville,

And that’s all I could fit in that sentence. Did I mention our events calendar usually has over 160 listings? You can bet there will be music, lots of food and some of Wisconsin’s finest beverages including wine and beer that’s produced locally. They don’t call Potosi, ‘Beer’s Hometown’, for nothing!

If you want to do it up big time you won’t want to miss the Grant County Fair in August from the 18th to the 22nd. It’s truly a family event that brings people back home to visit relatives and friends. Everything you expect and more at a great country fair. On August 6th you can even join us for an outdoor movie night at the fairgrounds in Lancaster. And if there’s a holiday you just know we’ll find a way to celebrate it. The fireworks in Boscobel are just part of the show on the 4th of July. Thunder in the Valley, well that’s Bagley’s thing. Christmas brings out the best in light displays, craft sales, and all-around holiday cheer. Oh, and did I mention tractor pulls, farmer’s markets and community garage sales and... well, you get the idea. Southwest Wisconsin Wine Trail
is a consortium of 4 Wisconsin wineries that are located within the Upper Mississippi River Valley AVA (American Viticultural Area). These wineries share a passion for their craft – creating wine. They each have a story to tell. As you visit these wineries you will find that there is a common thread to each story. That thread is the challenge of making great wine from new and emerging grape varieties that are cold hardy enough to withstand the weather of the Upper Midwest. Some of these wineries make their wine using only their own grapes and others wineries don’t grow any grapes but do source from local growers. Some of them also make wines from fruit, such as cranberries, apples, cherries and currants. You can even find Mead, a wine made from honey. So take the trail that winds through the beautiful hills and valleys of Southwest Wisconsin and taste the passion and the variety for yourself. While we’re a big part of the reason Wisconsin is known as America’s Dairyland, Grant County has a deep history – literally! The Mining and Rollo Jamison Museums in Platteville tell the tale of how lead mining shaped the community and its university. Go underground and tour an actual lead mine used in the late 1800s. Learn about the railroad industry too with the Boscobel Depot Museum and Fennimore Railway Museum. Or, be a kid again with the Doll and Toy Museum in Fennimore! And our history certainly goes back long before the first European settlers. Mounds built by indigenous peoples centuries ago can still be found in the region. Come celebrate all that makes Wisconsin what it is today.
