Our Community
With a population of over 5,000, Evansville cherishes its strong sense of community and small town charm. Voted Best Places to Live in Rock County (Niche.com), Rock County’s Fasted Growing Community (2018) and Best City for Young Families in Wisconsin (NerdWallet 2016), residents gather often for concerts, festivals and celebrations. With its safe neighborhoods and quiet tree-lined streets, small town values permeate our way of life. Exceptional schools, numerous parks, noted historic district and recently updated library are sources of local pride. Located only 23 miles south of Madison and 18 miles west of Janesville, Evansville offers small town living coupled with easy access to the world-class Photo by Karen Fisher universities, arts, and entertainment traditionally found only in metropolitan areas. No need to leave the city limits to experience the arts, however. Evansville is home to nationally-recognized local artists and artisans, as well abundant folk art. In addition to a robust arts scene, Evansville offers fantastic access to area parks, lakes, and trails, a potent combination resulting in a fantastic quality of life for Evansville residents! Designated as a Tree City USA since 2002 and Bird City USA since 2011, Evansville is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream. Situated midway between two of Rock County’s most picturesque parks - Gibbs Lake and Magnolia Bluff - and planned future expansion of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail, the Evansville area offers incredible opportunities to live in and explore the great outdoors. As a Tree City USA, the city plants trees each year along street terraces and in the public parks. In addition, the Evansville Community School District established the Grove Community Forest Trail to connect the school buildings with adjacent natural areas and Wind Prairie Park. Besides enhancing our green space, the trail serves as an outdoor classroom for hands-on experience with conservation and natural resources.
Green Leader Evansville is home to a number of initiatives focused on energy conservation and renewable energy which have been built on a tradition of alternative energy. As an example of this tradition, Baker Manufacturing, the community’s oldest operating business, built windmills from the late 1880s until the 1950s (and continues to manufacturer water pumps today). Examples of vintage Baker windmills can be seen in the Eager Economy Building, at the Madison Street entrance to the Leonard-Leota Park and in the Wind Prairie Park. Evansville has been recognized as a green leader in Wisconsin and a Wisconsin Energy Independent Community. As a symbolic link between Evansville past and present, a 100 kW wind turbine was erected next to the city’s wastewater treatment plant in 2010. The school district’s state-of-the-art high school includes geothermal heating/cooling. 6

Our Roots Settled in the 1840s, Evansville was originally known as the “The Grove,” a reference to a stand of trees just northwest of the city. The community has carefully preserved and revitalized its historic residential and commercial buildings, making Evansville home to what the Wisconsin Historical Society has identified as “the finest collection of 1840s to 1915 architecture of any small town in Wisconsin.” The reinstallation of the original brick-paved Main Street was a signature revitalization project that complemented the historic appearance of our downtown business district. Many downtown business owners have undertaken major building restorations, with several projects receiving historic preservation awards. A free brochure with self-guided walking tours shows off the architecture of historic buildings in and around the historic district. In 2007, in recognition for the many contributions of the farming community, Evansville was declared by the proclamation of the State of Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Soybean Association as “Soybean Capitol of Wisconsin.” A fun display with historical information regarding the proclamation and contributions of the agribusiness and farmers is located in the lower level of the Eager Building at 7 East Main Street.
Agriculture – Past & Present Agribusiness and area farmers have been important to the Evansville community since 1839. In 1874, farmers and members of the Grange, also referred to as the Patrons of Husbandry, organized and formed the Evansville Mercantile Association. They opened a general store named The Grange. The Grange was an important part of the Evansville economy for over 100 years. The store was housed in a downtown business site, presently referred to as The Grange Mall. This building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The predominant livestock is cows with several dairy farms in the vicinity; farms are often truly “family farms” remaining in the family over several generations. The biggest crops in the area are corn and soybeans. Native grasses and prairie plantings, vegetables and organic produce also have a significant presence among our local farms. Several prominent Evansville businesses cater to agriculture providing services such as grain storage, truck and rail shipping, fertilizer and agronomy, and large animal veterinarians.

Leonard Leota Park In the heart of Leonard Leota Park is Lake Leota, a 40-acre, stream-fed body of water for canoeing, fishing and ice skating. Twenty acres of the lake were dredged to restore the lake for recreational use and wildlife habitat. Visible in the park are stone creek walls, picnic tables, bell tower, buildings and other stone structures built during the Great Depression as Civilian Conservation Corps and Works Progress Administration projects. Rehabilitation of the creek walls is currently underway. Leonard Leota Park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a designed landscape. Leonard Leota Park also offers the following amenities: • Picnic areas including five shelter houses • Baseball and softball diamonds • Playground areas in four locations • Basketball court • Skate park • Tennis courts • Disc golf course • Hiking areas An interesting feature to the park is the welcome center and local history museum, housed in the former Baker Office Building. This historic building was no longer in use by Baker Manufacturing and moved to the park’s Madison Street entrance in 1999. The Evansville Grove Society restored the building to serve as office space for the society and as a local history museum. The building also is the home of Evansville Community Partnership (ECP), a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing Evansville’s quality of life. In 2009, in honor of the building’s history, the Baker Manufacturing Company donated a vintage Baker Monitor windmill which was installed next to the building and can be viewed from Madison Street. 8

Reserving Park Facilities The park picnic shelters may be reserved for family and business gatherings. The ball diamonds and soccer fields may also be reserved for single or multi-day and seasonal events. Facilities are available on a first-come, first-served basis. To reserve these amenities, please contact City Hall at 608-882-2266. Shelter rental fees are: City Resident $35 Non-Resident $65 Profit Organizations $100 *A $100 security deposit is required with any reservation.
Recreational Facilities In addition to city parks, there are nearby recreational areas outside of Evansville. They include: Magnolia Bluff County Park - Offers bridle & nature trails and hiking and cross country ski trails, 4 miles southwest of Evansville Gibbs Lake County Park - Offers hiking, cross country skiing, bridle path, boat landing and launch areas, 5 miles northeast of Evansville Sugar River Trail - Offers hiking biking, and snowmobile trails, 9 miles southwest of Evansville in Albany For the latest information on City of Evansville follow us on Facebook at @CityofEvansvilleWIMunicipality.
Outdoor Swimming Pool The Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center, located in Leonard Leota Park, is open to the public during the summer months. It is fully equipped with locker rooms, showers, lifeguards, a zerodepth entry area for young children and inexperienced swimmers, a diving board and two slides. A special section for lap swimming is available and swimming lessons are also offered. The pool’s season runs from June through August. The Evansville Community School District is a district of approximately 1,761 total students. The district takes pride in its small class sizes and its focus on the child as an individual. Additionally, the district offers a comprehensive approach to academics, fine arts, physical fitness/athletics and technology integration; however, most importantly, the district works hard to foster a safe, caring, inclusive, and equitable learning environment for all students. Using a Continuous System of Improvement model, the ECSD has collaborative committees composed of educators, Board members, and community members that focus on overall district performance in areas such culture and climate, communication, teaching and learning, and technology. In addition to consistently performing at an “exceeding expectations” level on the Wisconsin DPI annual report card, the ECSD has received accolades including a Blue Ribbon School award, and consecutive College Board Advanced Placement District Honor Roll in 2017 and 2018. The Department of Public Instruction provides public access to academic performance data on the WISEdash Public Portal: https://wisedash. dpi.wi.gov/Dashboard/portalHome.jsp The Wisconsin public school open enrollment application period is open from February through April for the following school year. Active PTO’s, music and sports booster programs provide many extras for their schools and community, and the district has a variety of means for parental/community involvement.
Levi Leonard Our elementary school consists of Early Childhood, Four-Year-Old Kindergarten, Kindergarten, and first and second grade classes. Through life skills lessons and Little Blue assemblies, students develop positive social and emotional skills that build the foundation for future relationships and learning. The AGR grant allows us to maintain small student-teacher ratios with approximately 18 students per class. J.C. McKenna Our middle school consists of grade levels 6-8. The days consist of a modified block schedule with students having core classes for an entire block and two encore classes for half of a block with the exception being that Physical Education is an entire block. The modified block allows students to take band, choir, music appreciation, health, physical education and Life Skills 411/ Agriculture within a three day rotation. All students participate in art, computers and technical education at each grade level. Evansville High School Opened in 2002-03, our comprehensive high school offers academic, fine arts, and vocational/ technical classes on a A/B block schedule.
