Superintendent’s Greeting Dear VASD families, Welcome to the 2019 – 2020 school year! The mission of the Verona Area School District is: Every Student Must Be Successful. The entire staff of the Verona Area School District (VASD) from teachers to support staff, food service, custodians, administrators and Board of Education is completely committed to our mission. Everyone’s role in the district will continue to focus on making this the best educational experience for your child(ren)! We are an active school district with so much to offer our students and their Dean Gorrell, families. I want to focus this communiSuperintendent cation on four areas of activity. Our Strategic Plan - Last summer the Board approved our five-year strategic plan which is built to support the mission of Every Student Being Successful. Additionally, last year the Board established two goals of removing the predictability of student outcomes and resource allocation. As we start year two of the plan, our first full academic year utilizing the plan, we will be aligning systems, policy and resources in support of that plan and the Board goals. Building for 2020 - In April of 2017, the voters of the Verona Area School District overwhelmingly approved three referendum questions to build a new high school, remodel and repurpose
Badger Ridge Middle School/Core Knowledge Charter School and the existing high school and K-Wing. Additionally, voters approved an operational referendum to pay for additional staff related to the new building. We are on schedule to open our new high school in the Fall of 2020. I encourage you to visit our website to see pictures, drone video and other documents related to this construction project. School Attendance Boundary Changes: At their July 23 meeting, the Board of Education voted on attendance area boundaries for our elementary and middle schools taking effect in the 2020 - 2021 school year. The Board has not yet made a decision on the extent of grandfathering, if any, for elementary school students. For families who have a middle school student sometime in the 2020 -2021 to 2022 – 2023 school years, the Board approved carrying out a “phase-in” plan over a three-year period. Those families have already received a letter detailing that process. Additional information to families will come from the district as it unveils. In the meantime, you can find all things related to the boundaries process by visiting verona.k12.wi.us/Buildingfor2020. Personalized Learning - In April of 2013, the Board of Education approved the goal that every student in VASD would have a personalized learning plan. A great deal of work on building the necessary technology infrastructure and staff training has occurred and this past year, we implemented personalized learning in every classroom of every school! Each student has now completed the goal of having a Personalized Learning Plan (PLP). We also created a personalized learning progression to support teacher practices in the classroom. Our focus remains on:
• Academic goal setting • Learner profiles • Continual teacher professional development (this has been on-going since 2013) • A new software platform to support the work of student PLPs • Engaging with families during the PLP process You can find the most up-to-date information on our website at verona.k12.wi.us/PersonalizedLearning. Verona Area School District Pre-K Program family will receive a letter in the mail in May giving you the information about your child’s Pre-K site and session times.

What is Verona Area Pre-K? Verona Area Pre-K is a community based preschool program for four-year-old children residing within the Verona Area School District.
Who is eligible for Verona Area Pre-K? Any four-year-old living in the Verona Area School District (four years old by September 1). There are no early admissions.
When are the classes?
Who are the teachers? The play-based, developmentally appropriate programs are taught by highly qualified Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction licensed Pre-K teachers. A co-teacher is assigned to classrooms of more than 12 students.
What is the cost?
Classes run Tuesday through Friday for 3 hours and 10 minutes / 7:50-11:00 AM or 8:3011:40 AM (Times approximate.) The school year runs the same as the Verona Area School District calendar.
This is a tuition-free program. A fee may be charged for supplies or snacks. Some locations offer optional extended childcare. Families are responsible for childcare cost beyond the Pre-K program. Families must arrange childcare on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Children are enrolled in the Verona Area School District’s program but taught in a local community preschool/childcare location. Families will list their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice preference when they register online. Children will participate in play-based activities that provide rich learning experiences. A focus on learning through play allows children to gain skills in all areas including: social-emotional, cognitive, creative expression, early literacy, early math, and self-help. Teachers will use materials and curriculum that enhance those experiences through a hands-on approach.
What if I don’t have transportation? Transportation will be provided if the child lives, or is cared for, at least ¼ mile or more from the Pre-K site! be determined by where your child is picked up and dropped off. Families participating in the Spanish Two-Way Immersion Program will be bussed to Pooh Bear Child Care and Preschool. Pick-up and drop-off will be close to the residence but busses will not go down cul-de-sacs or dead-end roads.
How do I register? Step 1 – Your family needs to provide paperwork to initiate the registration process. (Child’s birth certificate and proof of residency) Step 2 – Your family will receive a Snapcode with instructions for online registration in the mail. Grades 1-5 Supply Drop Off Parents and students may meet the teachers and drop off school supplies in the classrooms on Thursday, August 22nd from 5:00 – 6:00 p.m.
Kindergarten Supply Drop Off/Information Kindergarten families will have a pre-scheduled hour block of time on Friday, August 23rd, to meet the teachers, have questions answered, and drop off supplies. The first full day of school for Kindergarten students will be on Monday, August 26th.
First Day of School All Grades 1-5 students should report directly to their classrooms on Friday, August 23rd. Students may enter the building after the first bell at 9:15 on Mondays or 7:35 a.m. Tuesdays – Fridays. School starts and attendance is taken at 9:25 on Mondays and at 7:45 a.m. Tuesdays – Fridays. The school day ends at 2:40 p.m.
Student Absences In accordance with School Board Policy 431, attendance and tardies are closely monitored. Attendance is taken at 7:45 each morning. We ask that parents call before the start of school to inform Sugar Creek if your child will be absent or tardy.
Behavioral Management Sugar Creek has been recognized by the State of Wisconsin as a Positive Behavior Intervention Systems (PBIS) School of Merit AND School of Distinction! PBIS
is a process of teaching and supporting students and staff to follow four basic school-wide expectations: 1. Be Kind and Respectful 2. Be Responsible 3. Be a Problem Solver 4. Be Safe Families can play a large role in advancing the positive behaviors of our students by reinforcing the same schoolwide expectations at home. Bedtime, Todd Brunner, meals, playtime, or trips to the store are Principal all great opportunities to apply the same (AKA - Spiderman) concepts. Verona Area School District Bullying Policy The Verona Area School District strives to provide a safe, secure and respectful learning environment for all students in school buildings, on school grounds, in school buses and at school-sponsored activities. Bullying has a harmful social, physical, psychological and academic impact on bullies, victims and bystanders. The District shall consistently and vigorously address bullying so that there is no disruption to the learning environment and learning process. Bullying behavior is prohibited in all schools, buildings, property and educational environments, including any property or vehicle owned, leased or used by the District. This includes public transportation regularly used by students to go to and from school. Educational environments include, but are

The office will also be open if you have forms to turn in or questions. If you are unable to attend this event, we will have a RETAKE Picture Day at school on October 16th.
Talk-Ins: Talk-Ins are a time for parents to meet your child’s classroom teacher and learn about classroom routine, communication, curriculum, volunteer opportunities and ask questions you may have about the year. No children please. This year Talk-Ins will be held on Thursday, August 29th – Grades 4 & 5 @ 5:30-6:15 pm, Grades 1-3 @ 6:30-7:15 pm

More about us… Glacier is one of two schools in the district to host the TwoWay Immersion Program in the school district, teaching children in Spanish for half of their day and English for the other half. The school is proud to share that their students are held account-
able at their monthly community gatherings to recognize positives and celebrate the schools BIG 4 (Be Responsible Be Safe, Be Ready, Be Respectful). And to ensure those goals are met, the Tower of Power program allows students to celebrate their victories in day-to-day learning with incentives that include fun such as a Fancy Friday lunches, the Staff Olympics, dress up days, and even a hallway dance party! Outside of the classroom, Glacier Edge keeps busy not only with their own impressive MakerSpace allowing for computer coding/programming, a Lego Wall, Osmos, and 3D printers, but also focuses on its after-school clubs, homework help program and its homework club in Nakoma Heights neighborhood. Studies also continue in the community with active learning at the nearby Whalen Pond as a partnership with the University of Wisconsin and the City of Verona. In addition, the school offers a Vanderbilt University science and math partnership. On the extracurricular side, kids can keep active outside of the classroom with fun including Girls on the Run, Born to Move, soccer leagues and the Color Run. Lastly, the school has very active parent groups: the schools Continuous Improvement Team, a PTO and Correr La Voz (Spanish speaking parent leadership group).

Directory information, which is information that is generally not considered harmful or an invasion of privacy if released, can also be disclosed to outside organizations without a parent’s prior written consent. Notice of Educational Options The state of Wisconsin now requires that all school districts inform families about educational options for all children who reside in that district. The Verona Area School District offers a variety of educational options to children who reside in the District. The District’s primary educational pathway and instructional program for students involves a progression from 4-yearold kindergarten through 12th grade, leading to a high school diploma. Part Time Open Enrollment • Wisconsin public high school students may apply to attend one or two courses in nonresident school districts, while remaining enrolled in their district of attendance for the majority of their classes. Additional educational options for children who reside in the District that involve full-time enrollment/attendance at a school, program, or other educational institution that is not a school or instrumentality of the Verona Area School District include the following: • A child with a disability who meets the program’s specific eligibility requirements may apply to attend an eligible, participating private school under a scholarship awarded through the state’s “Special Needs Scholarship Program,” as established under section 115.7915 of the state statutes. • Enrollment in a private school of the family’s choosing (at the family’s own cost, as applicable). • Enrollment in a home-based private educational program as provided under state law.
Educational options for children who reside in the Verona Area School District but who are enrolled in and attending a private school or home-based private educational program include the following: • The school board of a school district operating high school grades shall allow a pupil enrolled in a private school to take up to two courses per semester if there is space available as provided under 118.145(4) of the state statutes. The student must be a resident in the school district where the public school is located. Students who are enrolled in a home-based private educational program have the opportunity to: • Apply for approval to take up to two courses per semester in public schools as provided under section 118.53 • Participate in District interscholastic athletics and other District extra-curricular activities as provided under section 118.133
Parental Rights to Seek Information Regarding Staff Qualifications All teachers employed by the Verona Area School District (VASD) have at least a bachelor’s degree, and approximately 75 percent have a Master’s degree or equivalent. All VASD teachers are DPI licensed for their assignment. Finally, all instructional aides employed by VASD are considered qualified for their work assignments. Federal law requires schools to share information with parents who ask about the qualifications of teachers employed by the school district. Parents may ask for information con-
cerning licensure, waiver of any requirements, major(s) and degrees held. Parents can also ask about instructional aides working with their children and their qualifications. Information concerning state qualifications for teachers can be found on the DPI website at www.dpi.state.wi.us/dpi/dlsis/tel/lisearch.html. Public Release National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs Release Statement The Verona Area School District announced its policy for children unable to pay the full price of meals served under the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program. Each school office and the central office has a copy of the policy, which may be reviewed by any interested party. The following household size and income criteria will be used for determining eligibility. Children from families whose annual income is at or below the levels shown are eligible for free and reduced price meals. Application forms are being sent to all homes with a notice to parents or guardians. To apply for free or reduced price meals, households must fill out the application and return it to the school (unless notified at the start of the school year that children are eligible through direct certification). Additional copies are available at the office in each school. The information provided on the application will be used for the purpose of determining eligibility and may be verified at any time during the school year by agency or other program officials. Applications may be submitted at any time during the year. To obtain free or reduced price meals for children in a household where one or more household members receive FoodShare, FDPIR, or Wisconsin Works (W-2) cash benefits, list the FoodShare, FDPIR or W-2 case number, program name, list the names of all school children, sign the application, and return it to the school office. For the school officials to determine eligibility for free or reduced price meals of households not receiving FoodShare, FDPIR or W-2 cash benefits, the household must provide the following information requested on the application: names of all household members, total number of household members, and the adult signing the application form must also list the last four digits of his or her Social Security Number or mark the box to the right of “Check if no SSN”. Also, the income received by each household member must be provided by amount and source (wages, welfare, child support, etc.). Under the provisions of the free and reduced price meal policy Theresa Bull, Child Nutrition Secretary, or Cindra Magli, Director of Child Nutrition at 845-4139will review applications and determine eligibility. If a parent or guardian is dissatisfied with the ruling of the official, he/she may wish to discuss the decision with the determining official on an informal basis. If the parent/

guardian wishes to make a formal appeal, he/she may make a request either orally or in writing to: Cindra Magli, Director, Child Nutrition Services at (608) 845-4139 or Child Nutrition Services, P.O. Box 930007, Verona, WI 53593. If a hearing is needed to appeal the decision, the policy contains an outline of the hearing procedure. If a household member becomes unemployed or if the household size changes, the family should contact the school. Such changes may make the household eligible for reduced price meals or free meals if the household income falls at or below the levels shown above, and they may reapply at that time. Children formally placed in foster care are also eligible for free meal benefits. Foster children may be certified as eligible without a household application. Households with foster children and non-foster children may choose to include the foster child as a household member, as well as any personal income available to the foster child, on the same application that includes their non-foster children. The information provided by the household on the application is confidential. Public Law 103448 limits the release of student free and reduced price school meal eligibility status to persons directly connected with the administration and enforcement of federal or state educational programs. Consent of the parent/guardian is needed for other purposes such as waiver of text book fees.

Child Nutrition We provide healthy meal choices while emphasizing fruits and vegetables, and whole grains that meet the USDA guidelines. Verona Area Schools have an “offer” rather than a “serve” meal program. Students are required to take only three of the five food groups for lunch. Lunch includes a protein, vegetable, fruit, whole grain/bread and milk group. The USDA regulations do require that one of the three food-group choices on a student’s tray must be a serving of fruit or vegetables. Students are required to take three out of the four food groups for breakfast. High school students have access to ala carte items, which features individually priced items such as sandwiches, fresh fruit, yogurt, string cheese, bagels and cream cheese, etc. Ala carte items may not be purchased unless funds are available in their meal account. The Verona Area School District has a policy for children unable to pay the full price of meals served under the National School Breakfast and Lunch Programs. Each school office and the District office have a copy of the policy, which may be reviewed by interested parties. Meal applications are available on line and at each school office. You may contact the Child Nutrition Services Office at 845-4139 or email child.nutrition@verona.k12.wi.us. If your child has a special diet or food allergy, please contact the school nurse, or the Child Nutrition Office at 845-4139.
Come join us for breakfast • Breakfast is served at all of the schools for only $1.05 per middle school student, $1.10 per high school student. Reduced and elementary breakfast in the classrooms is no charge. • The National School Breakfast Program meals must meet the current Dietary Guidelines for Americans and must provide at least ¼ of a child’s daily requirement for calories, protein, calcium, iron, vitamin A and vitamin C. • Generally, school breakfast will consist of milk, fruit and 100% fruit juice, and a main dish or item that includes grains, and/or protein source. Children who eat breakfast show an increased ability to learn, better academic performance and may have a decreased risk of being overweight. • Elementary breakfast in the classroom. In 2018 and 2019, Stoner Prairie was recognized at the Bronze Level by the Wisconsin RtI Center and the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. We were recognized for our efforts to implement equitable and responsive systems for all students. While we are proud of this accomplishment, we still have some expansion, refinement and adjustments to make as we strive for a fully inclusive school community. We are excited to build on our systems and structures designed to support the learning of all students. More about us… Congratulations to our recent 5th grade graduates who have received their Pathways to Biliteracy certificate, for participating in our Chinese Immersion school. Following 5th grade, our students are welcome to enroll in the Mandarin Language class at Savanna Oaks Middle School, to continue their language learning. In the 2017-2018 school year, VAIS received the Donna Clementi Blue Ribbon Award for Excellence in World Language Programs from the Wisconsin Association for LanguageTeachers. The Wisconsin Student Assessment System The Wisconsin Student Assessment System (WSAS) is a comprehensive statewide program designed to provide information about what students know in core academic areas and whether they can apply what they know. The WSAS includes: • The Wisconsin Forward Exam at grades 3-8 in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics, at grades 4 and 8 in Science, and 4, 8, and 10 in Social Studies •A CT Aspire at grades 9 & 10 • The ACT Plus Writing at grade 11 for Reading, English, Mathematics, Science, and Writing Student performance on these assessments is reported in proficiency categories and used for accountability determination at the school, district and state levels. Stats., Title VI, Title IX, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 or in some way discriminates against pupils on the basis of sex, race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, creed, pregnancy, marital or parental status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or physical, mental, or emotional or learning disability, he/she may bring or send a complaint to the Administration Office at the following address: 700 N. Main Street, Verona, Wisconsin 53593. Step 1: A written statement of the complaint shall be prepared by the complainant and signed. This complaint shall be presented to the district employee designated to receive complaints. That employee shall send written acknowledge of receipt of the complaint within 45 days. Step 2: A written determination of the complaint shall be made by the board within 90 days of receipt of the complaint unless the
parties agree to an extension of time: appeals under 20 USC s.145 and Ch. 115, Wis. Stats., relating to the identification, evaluation, educational placement or the provision of a free appropriate public education of a child with an exceptional educational need shall be resolved through the procedures authorized by Ch. 115, Subch. V., Wis. Stats. Complaints under 20 USC s.1231e-3 and 34 CFR ss.76.78076.782, commonly referred to as EDGAR complaints, that the state or a subgrantee is violating a federal statute or regulation that applies to a program shall be referred directly to the state superintendent. Step 3: If a complainant wishes to appeal a negative determination by the board, he/she has the right to appeal the decision to the state superintendent within 30 days of the board’s decision. In addition, the complainant may appeal directly to the state superintendent if the board has not provided written acknowledgment within 45 days of receipt of the complaint or made a determination within 90 days of receipt of the written complaint. Appeals should be addressed to Sate Superintendent, Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, 125 South Webster Street, P.O. Box 7841, Madison, Wisconsin 53707. Step 4: Discrimination complaints on some of the above bases may also be filed with the federal government at the Office for Civil Rights, U.S. Department of Education, 300 South Wacker Drive, 8th Floor, Chicago, Illinois 60606. There shall be no retaliation against any person who in good faith files a complaint under this policy. NOTE: The s.118.13 complaint procedure does not apply to district employees or job applications. Also, it does not replace the federal regulations that require a school district to have Title IX and Section 504 complaint procedures.
Any employee or applicant for employment who believes that the District or any part of the school organization has in some way violated the District’s equal employment opportunities policy may bring forward a complaint in accordance with this procedure. This procedure may also be used for filing and responding to other employee-related complaints. Informal Procedure Any person who believes he/she has a valid basis for a complaint shall attempt to resolve the complaint promptly by discussion with the building principal or his/her immediate supervisor. The principal or supervisor shall keep a written record of the discussion, provide a copy to the complainant, and reply to the complaint in writing. If this reply is not acceptable to the complainant, he/she may initiate formal procedures according to the steps listed below. Formal Complaint Procedure Step 1: A written complaint statement shall be prepared by the complainant and signed. It shall be presented to the Director of Human Resources who shall immediately undertake an investigation of the suspected infraction. He/she shall review with the building principal, or other appropriate persons, the facts comprising the alleged discrimination or other complaint. The Director of Human Resources shall decide the merits of the case, determine the action to be taken, if any, and report in writing the findings and the resolution of the case to the complainant. Step 2: If the complainant is not satisfied with the decision of the Director of Human Resources, he/she may appeal the decision in writing to the Superintendent. The Superintendent shall meet with all parties involved, formulate a conclusion and respond in writing to the complainant. Step 3: If the complainant is not satisfied with the Superintendent’s decision, or in lieu of utilizing this complaint procedures, the complainant may pursue alternate actions available under state or federal laws (i.e. the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, the Equal Rights Division of the Department of Workforce Development, the U.S. Office for Civil Rights Region V and/or courts having proper jurisdiction).Responses to discrimination complaints shall be made within applicable timelines established by law. There shall be no retaliation against any employee who in good faith files a complaint under this policy.

Badger Ridge Middle School School Photos All students will have their pictures taken during Back-to-School Night on Wednesday, August 21st. Picture order forms will be available at this time. In accordance with School Board Policy 431, attendance and tardies are closely monitored. We ask that parents call 845-4103 before the start of school if your child will be absent or tardy.
1:1 iPads All students will be issued personal iPads for the 2019-20 school year to engage in academic work. The district iPad policy will be reviewed for all students by our teaching staff. Just a reminder that you can enroll your student in the VASD iPad damage waiver program.
Student Planner/Handbook Students are expected to utilize electronic planners or paper assignment planner. The student handbook is located on the school’s website for review at any time.
Locks and Locker Set-up Incoming sixth graders and new BRMS/ CKMS students will be issued locks from the school on Back-to- School Night. The cost of the lock is $5.00 and will be used all three years at the middle school. Seventh and eighth grade students may purchase replacement locks the first day of school for $5.00. The school building will be open daily in late August for students to set up their lockers. Students may also set up their lockers during Back-to-School Night.
Extra curricular activities We encourage students to participate in the extracurricular activities that we offer at the middle school. The Student Handbook and our website lists all of the opportunities that are available. Students will also receive information about these activities at Back-to-School Night, through our daily announcements, and regular electronic school messages delivered throughout the school year.

Exploration Academy First Day of School Only new Exploration Academy students should report directly to the K-wing building on August 23 at 8:30 AM. Students will be released at 3:42 PM. All Exploration Academy students will report for a full day of school on August 26. The standard student school day will begin at 8:30 AM and dismiss at 3:42 PM. Registration Registration for Exploration Academy and payment of fees is totally online for your convenience. Student pictures will be taken on Friday, August 30th. The fee schedule will be as follows: General fee = $35 (includes student planner/handbook); extracurricular fees: club participation fee = $40; parking permits = $50; yearbook = $60. Please refer to the district web page for more specific information regarding fees. Students will also have the option to purchase a $35 pass to attend athletic events all year long. Athletic Fee Structure 1 Sport Athlete $125.00 total for one sport 2 Sport Athlete $125.00 + $25.00 = $150.00 total for two sports 3 Sport Athlete $125.00 +$25.00 + $15.00 = $165.00 total for three sports **Note that a family who has more than one child and those children are in multiple sports will pay a flat fee of $250.00**
Student Absence Attendance is taken multiple times throughout the school day. Parents are asked to call the K-wing attendance line (8454503) before 8:30 AM to inform the school when your child is going to be absent or tardy. First Day of School & Supply Drop Off Savanna Oaks’ first day of school will be Friday, August 23rd for sixth graders and students new to our school. This day provides our newest scholars with an opportunity to acquaint themselves to Savanna Oaks. Students and parents of 7th and 8th grade students may also drop off materials/supplies and organize their lockers. Please refer to 7th and 8th grade team messages for specifics. The first day of school for ALL students will be Monday, August 26th. All students will begin with their Advisory class. Students may refer to their schedules for their Advisor and room number. Schedules will be available online in mid August and a copy will be distributed to each student in Advisory. Advisory classroom assignments for all students will be available as students enter the building. Late Starts are NOT every Monday. Please refer to our website calendar for dates. Back to School Night Our first opportunity for Savanna Oaks families and staff to be together will be Wednesday, August 21st from 4 – 7pm. During this time there will be presentations for students and families as well as the opportunity to try out lockers, meet staff and reacquaint with friends.

Student Progress Reporting Student progress can be monitored on our school’s webpage under the Families tab, then under PowerSchool as well as other webSandy Eskrich, Principal & sites as defined by Pete Christofferson, Associate Principal each student’s team of teachers. Student/parent access codes for PowerSchool as well as other ways to follow progress are available for every family. The foundation of assessment at Savanna Oaks is demonstration of mastery of course standards. We will communicate quarterly in a Student Progress Report both Habits of Learning ratings as well as progress in mastering standards. Our progress reports describe standards that were attempted and the degree of success to date on each.
Extra-Curricular Activities Middle school offers a wide variety of opportunities with clubs, activities and athletics outside of the traditional school day. These include: Cross Country (September), Volleyball (September), Wrestling (November-December), Basketball-boys (Nov-Dec), Basketball-girls (Jan-Feb.), Ski Club (January and February) Track (April-May), Drama Club (fall to spring), Forensics (JanFeb), Student Council (all year), All-School Musical (Feb-May), Math Club (Nov-April.) and more as students and staff dream them up! The McKinney-Vento Act defines homeless children and youth as: • Children and youth who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence, and includes children and youth who are: o sharing the housing of other persons due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason o living in motels, hotels, trailer parks, or camping grounds due to the lack of alternative adequate accommodations o living in emergency or transitional shelters o abandoned in hospitals o living in a primary nighttime residence that is a public or private place not designed for or ordinarily used as a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings o living in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, bus or train stations, or similar settings; and o migratory children who qualify as homeless because the children are living in circumstances described above If you are personally aware of, or are acquainted with, any children or youth who may qualify according to the above criteria, the Verona Area School District provides the following assurances to parents and guardians of homeless children and youth and unaccompanied homeless youth: • The child or youth shall be immediately enrolled and allowed to fully participate in school, even if unable to produce
records normally required for enrollment (e.g., academic records, immunization and other required health records, proof of residency, or other documentation) or has missed application or enrollment deadlines during any period of homelessness. • Homeless children and youths are not stigmatized or segregated on the basis of their status as homeless and have full and equal educational and related opportunities. • Meaningful opportunities to participate in the education of their children including special notices of events, parent-teacher conferences, newsletters, and access to student records. • Immediate enrollment and transportation to the school of origin. “School of origin” means the school that a child or youth attended when permanently housed or the school in which the child or youth was last enrolled, including a preschool. • Written explanation of any decisions related to school selection or enrollment made by the school, the local educational agency, or the State educational agency involved, including the rights of the parent, guardian, or unaccompanied youth to appeal and receive prompt resolution of such decisions Please contact Emmett Durtschi, homeless liaison for the Verona Area School District, at (608) 845-4314 or durtsche@verona.k12.wi.us for additional information about the rights and services described above.

There is a buzz of excitement in the air as we anticipate the opening of a brand-new high school in Fall, 2020. I believe we are just the group to meet the challenges and possibilities of such an endeavor because I see our Wildcat Family as capable, adaptable and strong.
Did you know? • Total work hours that have gone into building the new VAHS so far are well over 375,000. • The academic core of the building is three stories high with six bridges crossing the atrium. It is more than two football fields long between exit doors in the atrium. • There are 670 Rooms in the new school. • There are 148,000 square feet of polished concrete floors. • The new building totals 590,000 square feet throughout four levels.

General Information Get Your Natatorium Programs & Schedules Electronically You can sign up to receive Natatorium Information via e-mail. Do so by going to the Verona Area School District Web site at www.verona.k12.wi.us, click on Select a School (top left hand corner). Then click on Verona Natatorium. On the front page you will find the Natatorium Newsletter Sign-up. Click on that and follow the prompts. Resident/Non-Resident A resident is someone who resides within the Verona Area School District. A Non-Resident is anyone who resides outside the Verona Area School District. Swim Diapers Swim Diapers (cloth or disposable) are required (by State Law) for all non-toilet-trained individuals. Groups Groups are welcome to attend Open Swim. Please call in advance so we are aware that you wish to come. Groups over 12 swimmers are asked to rent the pool at a time other than Open Swim. (See next page for rentals) Youth Lap Swim Swimmers under the age of 18 are welcome to swim laps during open swim. A lap lane will be provided during all open times unless the pool becomes crowded. See Monthly Schedule for detailed times. Adult Lap Swim Adult Lap Swim is open to anyone 18 years of age or older. Circle swimming is encouraged during peak times. Please refer to the pool schedule for specific lap times. Swimmers under the age of 18 are welcome to swim laps during Open Swim times only. See Monthly Schedule for detailed times. Open Swim Everyone is welcome to attend open swim. Children, 8 years of age and older may attend Open Swim without an adult. Children under the age of 8 must have a responsible person (15 or older) in the water with them at all times. Coast Guard Approved PFD’s are allowed during Open Swim. Water Exercise Water exercise classes are offered on weeknights throughout the summer. Classes include a combination of muscle building exercises, aerobics, water resistance exercises, and stretching. Participants do not need to know how to swim. No Pre-registration is necessary. Course Title Water Exercise
Family Swim Family Swim is designed as a time for families to swim together. All children must have an adult in the water with them at all times. Families are welcome to bring pool toys with them to family swim. Coast Guard Approved PFD’s are allowed during Open Swim. Water wings, floating rings and air mattresses will not be allowed. A lap lane will be provided during Family Swim unless the pool is crowded Pool Rentals & Rates Please make reservations at least two weeks in advance. To make a reservation, call Angie Lucas at 845-4632. The Natatorium rental rates are charged to cover lifeguard and custodial services and facility use costs. The pool will not be rented for fundraising or profit-making ventures. The Natatorium Director has the sole discretion to approve rentals. Pool Rules must be followed. The fee is required at the time of arrival. Adult supervision is required for all groups of children.

Masters Swim Program The Master Swim Program is an organized coaching program for Adults. Practice sessions will consist of stroke technique and development of all four racing strokes, starts, and turns. The program will also focus on developing general fitness, endurance and speed. Anyone looking for any or all of the following should consider the program: general higher level of fitness, competition, triathlon and open water swimming. VASD Back To School
SBR Session 1 will focus on developing swimmers’ aerobic fitness, strength and speed in the water. We will incorporate technique work into the workouts through drills and personal stroke feedback from the coaches. This will develop the swimmers’ base for sessions 2 and 3. This will be a great class for you if you have only spent 10 hours in the pool, or spend 10 hours per week swimming. The goal is for each swimmer to get the most out of any time spent in the pool. Annual Notification of Rights Concerning Pupil Records
The school district maintains several classes of pupil records. • “Progress records” include grades, courses the child has taken, the child’s attendance record, immunization records, required lead screening records, and records of school extra-curricular activities. Progress records must be maintained for at least five years after the child ceases to be enrolled. • “”Behavioral records” include such records as psychological tests, personality evaluations, records of conversations, written statements relating specifically to the
pupil’s behavior, tests relating specifically to achievement or measurement of ability, physical health records other than immunization and lead screening records, law enforcement officers’ records, and other pupil records that are not “progress records.” Law enforcement officers’ records are maintained separately from other pupil records. Behavioral records may be maintained for no longer than one year after the child graduates or otherwise ceases to be enrolled, unless the parent specifies in writing that the records may be maintained for a longer period of time. The school district informs parents when pupil records are no longer needed to provide special education. At the request of the child’s parents, the school district destroys the information that is no longer needed. • “Directory data” includes the student’s name, address, telephone listing, date and place of birth, major field of study, participation in officially recognized activities and sports, weight and height of members of athletic teams, dates of attendance, photographs, degrees and awards received, and the name of the school most recently previously attended by the student. • “Pupil physical health records” include basic health information about a pupil, including the pupil’s immunization records, an emergency medical card, a log of first aid and medicine administered to the pupil, an athletic permit card, a record concerning the pupil’s ability to participate in an education program, any required lead screening records, the results of any routine screening test, such as for hearing, vision or scoliosis, and any follow-up to the test, and any other basic health information, as determined by the state superintendent. Any pupil record relating to a pupil’s physical health that is not a pupil physical health record is treated as a patient health care record under sections 146.81 to 146.84, Wisconsin Statutes. Any pupil record concerning HIV testing is treated as provided under section 252.15, Wisconsin Statutes. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and section 118.125, Wisconsin Statutes, afford parents, guardians, and students over 18 years of age (“eligible students”) the following rights with respect to education records:

information regarding the hearing procedures will be provided to the parent or eligible student when notified of the right to a hearing. • The right to consent to disclosures of personally identifiable information in the student’s education records, except to the extent that federal and state law authorize disclosure without consent. The exceptions are stated in 34 CFR 99.31, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act regulations; Sec. 9528, PL107110, No Child Left Behind Act of 2001; and section 118.125(2)(a) to (m) and sub. (2m), Wisconsin Statutes. One exception that permits disclosure without consent is disclosures to school officials with legitimate educational interests. A school official is a person employed by the district as an administrator, supervisor, instructor, or support staff member (including health or medical staff and law enforcement unit personnel); a person serving on the school board; a person or company with whom the district has contracted to perform a special task (such as an attorney, auditor, medical consultant, or therapist); or a parent or student serving on an official committee, such as a disciplinary or grievance committee, or assisting another school official in performing his or her tasks. A school official has a legitimate educational interest if the official needs to review an education record in order to fulfill his or her professional responsibility. Upon request, the district discloses education records without consent to officials of another school district in which a student seeks or intends to enroll. Also the district discloses “directory data” without consent, unless the parent notifies the district that it may not be released without prior parental consent. • The right to file a complaint with the U. S. Department of Education concerning alleged failures by the District to comply with the requirements of FERPA. Upon request, the Verona Area School District is required to evaluate a child for eligibility for special education services. A request for evaluation is known as a referral. When the district receives a referral, the district will appoint an Individualized Education Program (IEP) team to determine if the child has a disability, and if the child needs special education services. The district locates, identifies, and evaluates all children with disabilities who are enrolled by their parents in private (including religious) schools, elementary schools and secondary schools located in the school district. A physician, nurse, psychologist, social worker, or administrator of a social agency who reasonably believes a child brought to him or her for services is a child with a disability has a legal duty to refer the child, including a homeless
• The right to inspect and review the student’s education records within 45 days of receipt of the request. Parents, guardians, or eligible students should submit to the school principal [or appropriate school official] a written request that identifies the records(s) they wish to inspect. The principal will make arrangements for access and notify the parent, guardian, or eligible student of the time and place where the records may be inspected. The school district will comply with the request without unnecessary delay and before any meeting about an individualized education program, or any due process hearing, and in no case more than 45 days after the request has been made. If any record includes information on more than one child, the parents or guardians of those children have the right to inspect and review only the information about their child or to be informed of that specific information. Upon request, the school district will give a parent, guardian, or eligible student a copy of the progress records and a copy of the behavioral records. Upon request, the school district will give the parent, guardian, or eligible student a list of the types and locations of education records collected, maintained, or used by the district for special education. The school district will respond to reasonable requests for explanations and interpretations of the records. A representative of the parent or guardian may inspect and review the records. • The right to request the amendment of the student’s education records that the parent or eligible student believes is inaccurate or misleading. Parents or eligible students may ask the Verona Area School District to amend a record that they believe is inaccurate or misleading. They should write the school principal, clearly identify the part of the record they want changed, and specify why it is inaccurate or misleading. If the district decides not to amend the record, the district will notify the parent or eligible student of the decision and the right to a hearing regarding the request for amendment. Additional

The Verona Area School District is required to locate, identify, and evaluate all children, with disabilities, including children with disabilities attending private schools in the school district, and homeless children. The process of locating, identifying, and evaluating children with disabilities is known as child find. Each year, child development days are conducted to allow families the opportunity to talk with qualified professionals about the progress their child is making or to discuss any concerns they have. The school district gathers personally identifiable information on any child who participates in child find activities. Parents, teachers, and other professionals provide information to the school related to the child’s academic performance, behavior, and health. This information is used to determine whether the child needs special education services. Personally identifiable information directly related to a child and maintained by the school is a pupil record. Pupil records include records maintained in any way including, but not limited to, computer storage media, video and audiotape, film, microfilm, and microfiche. Records maintained for personal use by a teacher and not available to others and records available only to persons involved in the psychological treatment of a child are not pupil records.
