Emergency preparedness tips for seniors

Natural disasters can strike at any time, and when they do, the damage is often considerable. According to the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, between 2005 and 2014 natural disasters caused $1.4 trillion in damage across the globe, affecting 1.7 billion people along the way. Various preventive measures can protect people and their homes from the potentially devastating impact of natural disasters. For example, oceanfront communities may be able to decrease property damage by exacting certain measures, such as building homes on stilts. Another way to prevent tragedy related to natural disasters is to develop an emergency preparedness plan before the next storm strikes. That’s important for everyone, but especially so for seniors, many of whom live with mobility issues that can compromise their ability to escape the eye of oncoming storms. In recognition of the potential problems seniors face when natural disasters strike, the American Red Cross offers the following tips to seniors and their families so aging men and women can make it through such situations safe and sound. • Make arrangements to contact loved ones. Prior to an emergency, seniors and their support network should make arrangements to make immediate contact once a disaster strikes. Determine who will make initial contact and how that contact will be made (i.e.,

via phone, text message, social media, etc.), as well as who will be responsible for providing assistance if necessary. Such a plan lets everyone within the support network know their precise responsibilities, which limits confusion in the sometimes hectic hours and days after disaster strikes.

• Exchange keys. Make sure everyone in the support network has keys to seniors’ homes. In so doing, support networks are increasing the chances that someone will be able to reach potentially vulnerable seniors if the primary contacts are incapable of doing so.

• Let others know where emergency supplies are kept. Everyone should have emergency supplies in their homes. Seniors should not take it for granted that such supplies can be easily found if they become incapacitated during a storm. Make sure such information can be easily accessed during a storm by emailing it to your support network and/or posting the information in a convenient location in your home, such as on the refrigerator. • Share your evacuation plans. In the wake of recent disasters, many communities that did not previously feel vulnerable to natural disasters have devised evacuation plans for residents. Seniors should share these plans with their support networks. Doing so makes it easier for relatives to find you if you must evacuate your home before help arrives. • Share important medical information. Seniors should share medical information, such as healthcare providers and a list of the medications they’re taking. This can make things easier for emergency responders to successfully treat people who become incapacitated during storms. Emergency preparedness strategies save lives. A Little Exercise, A Lot of Benefit We all know that exercise is good for us. It can control our weight, combat certain diseases, and help boost our energy. But recent studies are proving the benefits of exercise are greater than we ever imagined – especially as we age.

It can be one of the best things to do for our brains

In a study published in April by the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, researchers found one hour per week – less than 10 minutes a day – of moderate-tovigorous physical activity allowed older adults to maintain their ability to perform daily tasks like getting dressed or crossing a street before a traffic light changed. That’s a small investment for a potentially large return! Justin Athey, wellness coordinator at All Saints Neighborhood on Madison’s west side, agrees with the results of the study. “It’s a sad fact, but muscles will shrink as we age. For seniors, less muscle mass means an increase in the likelihood of injuries from falling.” Athey said while there are certainly benefits from moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, adding in weightbearing exercise can really positively impact a person’s overall health. “We try to educate the residents here at All Saints and encourage them to participate in some type of weight-bearing exercise class,” he said. Athey said that seniors who lift weights can typically walk for longer periods of time with more ease. “Not only do the leg muscles become stronger and have improved range of

motion to extend the use of the legs with age,” he said, “but resistance training also increases lung capacity and makes them more efficient in their use of oxygen.” Athey encourages anyone – no matter their age – to talk to their physician about starting a fitness program that would incorporate weight lifting or weight-bearing exercise. Those 55 and better from the community are

welcome to join the All Saints Wellness Center. “We try to make the classes fun and enjoyable for folks so they stay consistent and motivated,” said Athey. “When people challenge themselves outside of their daily activities, they feel more confident in their movement patterns, and ultimately just feel more uplifted and energized.” Article submitted by All Saints Assisted Living-Madison, WI

Pros and cons to early retirement Advantages

Many people seek early retirement so that they can live a life free of the constraints of schedules. In retirement, time becomes, more or less, a retiree’s own. Leaving a job can be a boon to a person’s health as well. Relieving oneself of the pressures and stresses of professional life can free up the mind and body. Stress can affect mental and physical health, taxing the heart and contributing to conditions such as depression or anxiety. According to the Mayo Clinic, stress can cause headache, muscle and chest pain and contribute to trouble sleeping.

The earlier the retirement, the more opportunity to travel before health issues begin to limit mobility. Early retirement also can be a way to volunteer more or even start a new job opportunity Ñ one where workers have greater control over their schedules and careers.

Disadvantages

One of the disadvantages of early retirement is a loss of income. Contributions to retirement accounts also ceases at retirement. This can lead to financial setbacks if adequate savings were not allocated for retirement. According to the resource Wealth How, some people who retire early fear outliving their savings. While retiring early may be good for health, it also can have negative consequences. An analysis from the National Bureau of Economic Research found that retirement can lead to declines in mental health and mobility as well as feelings of isolation. Retiring early may jump start these health implications. Another consideration is that health insurance provided by an employer typically ends at retirement. That means having to pay out of pocket until a person ages into government-subsidized healthcare, such as Medicare in the United States, at age 65. Retiring early is a complex issue that requires weighing the pros and cons.

Should you consider a trust? By definition, estate planning is a process designed to help manage and preserve assets while you’re alive, and to conserve and control their distribution after death in accordance with your goals and objectives. But what estate planning means to you specifically depends on who you are. Your age, health, wealth, lifestyle, life stage, goals, and other factors determine your particular estate planning needs. A trust may be the right choice for you.

Regardless of the specific goal of the grantor, there is usually an array of reasons for which one may set up a trust. These range from wanting to be able to control one’s property during one’s lifetime and ensuring that assets are available to take care of oneself and one’s family (especially in the event of illness or disability) to wanting to benefit certain individuals and/or institutions in a particular way or to further a particular cause all while assuring that these goals are attained with minimal professional fees and court costs. Think of these suggestions as simply a point in the right direction, and then seek professional advice to implement the right plan for you. By Ray C. A trust is a legal relationship in which legal ownership of the property is separate and distinct from the beneficial ownership of the property. The trustee holds the assets or property (also called the trust corpus or trust principal) for the benefit of another person or group of persons (the beneficiary or beneficiaries). Since the trust is for the benefit of the beneficiaries and not the trustee, the trustee has a legal obligation to act for the benefit of the beneficiaries in following the language of the trust document. The trustee is a fiduciary, and this is a fiduciary obligation.

Who Creates a Trust?

The trust is created by a person or persons who transfer property or assets of some type to the trustee. The trust document usually contains the following components. • Management of assets during life • Name of trustee and successor trustee • Disposal of assets at death • Powers and instructions to trustee

Why Create a Trust?

In its simplest form, a trust is a means to distribute your assets to the individuals and entities to whom you wish. It differs from a will (which is also a mechanism to transfer assets at death) in that a trust can be established to hold and manage assets as well as to provide for the care of the grantor and his or her family during life. Trusts, depending on if revocable or irrevocable, may provide an excellent solution to many problems one faces or may face. A trust may

provide a means of protection against the many issues related to disability and incompetency sometimes experienced as one gets older. Here are some things a trust may achieve. • A trust may provide a means of protection against the dire consequences of a failed marriage, an insolvent business, etc. • A trust, properly drafted and utilized, may reduce income tax and may reduce estate taxes. • A trust is a means to provide for children and successive generations until they are old enough and mature enough to handle these assets and responsibilities on their own. • A trust may provide professional investment management for the assets held in the trust. • A trust may be the means by which the grantor specifically details how certain assets are to be held and used to promote a certain legacy or certain charitable intent.

Failure to properly manage medications can threaten the lives of seniors, highlighting the emphasis families must place on ensuring seniors take their medications in strict adherence to their physicians’ instructions. Polypharmacy, or the taking of multiple medications for different conditions, can be a potential health hazard for the thousands of seniors who must manage health conditions with prescription drugs. Harmful drug interactions are a result of the confusion that can arise when seniors take multiple medications at the

The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists estimates that more than 34 percent of senior citizens are prescribed medications by more than one physician, and 72 percent use medications they were prescribed more than six months prior. Many people also have begun “pharmacy shopping” to save money. According to a study published in 2010 in American Nurse Today, 44 percent of men and 57 percent of women older than age 65 take five or more medications per week, with some taking as many as 10. Medication confusion is one risk, but older adults also metabolize medications differently than young people. As a result, they may be more susceptible to overdose or other ill effects. Families looking to help seniors effectively manage their medications should consider the following tips.

• Keep a running list of medications. Maintain a list of all medications being taken, noting both prescription and over-thecounter medications and any supplements and herbs. Provide a copy to any new doctors you visit and any new pharmacies you patronize. • Use pill sorters. Medication sorters can keep medications organized and eliminate some of the personal error in medication management. Organizers have daily slots and may also differentiate between nighttime and daytime medications. • Understand why each medication is being prescribed. Ask your pharmacist and doctor to explain why each medication is prescribed. This information should be printed on the prescription label. Some drugs designed for one symptom may actually be used to treat other issues as well. • Ask for help. Some seniors may benefit from friendly reminders from a loved one regarding when to take certain medications, especially if they need to take multiple doses throughout the day. Cognitively impaired seniors may require the services of a visiting nurse or another caregiver. • Recognize that not all medications are right for seniors. The American Geriatrics Society maintains a list of medications that older adults should avoid or take with extreme caution. Some drugs pose a high risk of side effects or interactions, while others are less effective. Discuss alternatives with your physician if you are prescribed one of these medications. • Keep a medication diary. Record any side effects that occur and how the medications make you feel. Always bring up issues promptly with a doctor. Proper medication management can help seniors avoid drug-related accidents or worse.

6 ways to make bathrooms a safer place

Homes should be safe havens. But each year injuries in and around the home contribute to millions of medical visits and many fatalities each year. Although anywhere in a home can be the scene of an accident, bathrooms tend to be the most dangerous room in the house. Slippery tile, the presence of water, stockpiled medications, and many sharp and hard edges in a small space pose several different hazards in the bathroom, particularly for young children and people age 65 and up. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says falls, which can result in serious injuries like hip fractures and head trauma, are the cause of 80 percent of all bathroom accidents. Many bathroom accidents are preventable with some easy modifications. 1. Reduce slippery surfaces. Wet tile is a recipe for slick conditions. Bath rugs with rubber backing can provide traction in the bathroom, as

can nonslip mats placed on the floor of the bathtub or shower enclosure. Water-resistant flooring made from recycled rubber is another option. It is softer, less slippery and more forgiving than traditional tile flooring. 2. Install lever-style fixtures. Round knobs in the bathroom can be difficult to grasp, especially for the elderly or those with arthritis. Leverstyle fixtures are easier to maneuver and can help alleviate scalding from not being able to adequately adjust the water temperature. 3. Utilize transfer benches and shower seats. A transfer bench can help reduce injuries that occur when trying to climb over a tub wall. Benches are placed outside of the tub and a person sits and then swings his legs over the ledge. Transfer benches also can be used in conjunction with shower seats. This is a chair or bench that allows people to sit while they shower. 4. Discard old medications. Clean out the medicine cabinet of old or

expired medications, including both prescription and over-the-counter drugs. This reduces the likelihood of medication confusion, and does not put potentially harmful pills and syrups into the hands of children.

Explore hospice options for end-of-life care

Hospice refers to a style of care that focuses on maximizing quality of life when facing the end stages of a disease for which there is no other course of treatment or when treatment becomes counterproductive. Palliative care is provided, which helps a patient to be more comfortable and content. Thousands of people turn to hospice when facing a life-limiting illness. According to the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, hospice involves a team-oriented approach to medical care and pain management as well as emotional and spiritual support. Care plans are specifically tailored to a patient’s wishes and needs. Hospice is not only directed toward the person experiencing a life-limiting illness or injury, but is also designed to offer support and resources to family members to help them better cope with the end of a loved one’s life.

Hospice takes on many forms but focuses on caring for, but not curing, an individual. Hospice care is often administered in a person’s home, but it also can occur in freestanding hospice centers, longterm care facilities, nursing homes, and hospitals. Individuals can opt for various services, many of which can co-mingle with the care being provided by family, medical centers or long-term care homes. Hospice care often begins when the individual receiving care and his or her family members feel the end of life may be near. According to Relias, a healthcare advisory organization, most patients enter hospice during the last six months of life. Care providers are interdisciplinary. Doctors, nurses, social service providers, bereavement therapists, dieticians, spiritual counselors, and physical or occupational therapists may be included in hospice treatment. Hospice is usually paid through private insurance, Medicare or Medicaid, so there is no need to worry about cost. Various hospice services operate in different areas, and doctors and care centers can refer patients to hospice programs. A hospice program may conduct its own medical examination and review health records to recommend a plan of action. It is important for a family member or health care proxy to be present for this initial meeting to express the patient’s wishes if he or she is unable to do so. Hospice care may begin shortly after this initial consultation. Hospice helps people with lifelimiting conditions spend their final days as comfortably as possible.

Everyday ways to help your elderly neighbors Thoughtful men, women and children can give back to their communities in various ways. Coaching youth sports, volunteering with local charities and donating to local food or clothing drives are just a few of the ways you can help make your community a better place. Another way to give back is to help your elderly neighbors who may not be as independent as they once were. Such men and women may have physical limitations that compromise their ability to perform everyday tasks. People in the prime of their life take their ability to perform such tasks for granted. And while these gestures might seem simple, helping your elderly neighbors with their everyday tasks can have a profound impact on their lives. • Ask if a neighbor needs anything from the grocery store. Everyone forgets to buy something at the grocery store from time to time. That’s a minor inconvenience to most people, but it can have a much bigger impact on elderly people who have mobility issues. Before taking trips to the grocery store, make it a habit to call an elderly neighbor and ask if he or she needs anything. • Invite seniors over for dinner or other gatherings. Many seniors deal with social isolation, which occurs when they lack opportunities to interact with other people. Recent data from the Administration on Aging indicates that 35 percent of women over the age of 65 were widows and almost half of women 75 and older live alone. Inviting elderly neighbors who live alone over for dinners, movie nights or game watches once per week is a great way to help them avoid social isolation and give them something to look forward to. • Help with some weekly chores. Seniors living on fixed incomes

may find it difficult to maintain their homes. Relatively simple tasks like mowing the lawn, taking out the garbage and even vacuuming can be difficult for seniors with physical limitations. Pitching in to help with such chores once or twice a week won’t require much time on your part and can have a significant impact on the lives of your aging neighbors. • Drive seniors to religious services. Attending religious services is important to many seniors, but those who can no longer drive themselves to weekly services may not

be attending them as much as they would like. Whether you attend such services or not, offer to drive an elderly neighbor on Sunday mornings (or whenever weekly services are held). Religious services can help seniors stay connected to their faith and their communities, and driving an elderly neighbor to and from houses of worship once per week won’t require a significant commitment of your time. Helping your elderly neighbors is a great and often simple way to give back to your community.

Home security tips for seniors

Seniors are often targeted by criminals. Though many criminals target seniors from afar via telephone or internet scams, criminals seek to enter seniors’ homes. The Bureau of Justice Statistics offers that, between 2003 and 2013, the ratio of property crime to violent crime was higher for the elderly and persons between the ages of 50 and 64 than it was for younger persons between the ages of 25 and 49. Home security is important for people of all ages, but especially so for seniors and aging individuals living alone. By following certain safety tips and developing a home security plan, seniors can feel safer at home. • Lock windows and doors. It may seem like common sense, but failure to repeatedly lock windows and doors can, and often does, give burglars easy entry into the home. • Think about a smart doorbell. Technology now enables doorbells to provide a video feed to a person’s smartphone or tablet over WiFi. This allows residents to see who is at the door and speak to this person without having to open the door. Some products like Ring¨ will even register motion activity and record short videos from outside of the house. • Don’t share or leave keys. Avoid leaving keys under a mat or in a flower pot. Others may be watching your actions and

gain access to your home while you are away. • Ask for ID. When service people or other individuals come to the door, verify their credentials by asking to see some identification. • Get a home security system.
