Please welcome... e... Jessica Gribben, Economic Development Liaison on Jessica Gribben is the new Economic Development Liaison to the City of Shelby and Northern Richland County. Jessica was born and raised in Richland County and is proud to call Richland County her home. Jessica graduated from Crestview High School and a ended The Ohio State University Mansfield before she took a job at Richland Bank specializing in mortgage and consumer lending. She then returned to school and earned her real estate license, and for the past 3.5 years she has worked helping clients buy and sell real estate. Jessica has always been ac ve in her local community serving as president of the Richland Young Professionals, a volunteer for the United Way of Richland County, serving on the Chamber and Richland County Founda on boards, and a member of the RCDG leadership board. Jessica is passionate about being involved in the community. “I am so excited to be joining forces with RCDG/Richland Area Chamber, the City of Shelby, and the village of Plymouth. There are so many people that are interested in moving Shelby and northern Richland County forward. Local man makes it his mission to clean up Mansfield's 'front yard' Jon S erhoff takes it personally when Mansfield’s Central Park looks less a rac ve than it should. In fact, he can get a li le huffy about it. S erhoff was walking the park not long ago, picking up all kinds of li er, including a staggering number of cigare e bu s. While on this mission of cleanliness, he no ced a visitor get out of his parked car and toss a cigare e bu on the ground. “I couldn’t believe it,’’ he said in astonishment. “I went over and picked up the bu and put it under his windshield wiper.’’ That experience, along with his strongly held belief that Central Park should be Mansfield’s front yard showplace, caused this director of opera ons for Rex’s Landscaping and Construc on to adopt Central Park on behalf of the company he directs. That adop on agreement with the city means S erhoff and Rex’s Landscaping will not only clean the park on a regular basis but will also mow, mulch, edge, trim and strengthen every inch of the park that adorns the center of the city. All of that work will be done on a voluntary basis. Other volunteers who have annually planted the flowers in park beds and containers will s ll do that work. “I want this park to look good all of the me. I want it to be on a professional level,’’ S erhoff said. Tree trimming will be done on an as-needed basis in coordina on with city crews. S erhoff also said he will talk to the city about long-range plans to remove some diseased or damaged trees in Central Park and replace them with legacy trees. S erhoff, 50, is a life-long Mansfielder and believes that allowing Central Park to look anything short of beau ful shows a lack of respect for the individuals and groups memorialized by monuments within the park. He es mated the value of the voluntary work to be done by Rex’s Landscaping to be $6,000-$8,000 annually. Rex’s Landscaping is owned by Andy Rex. S erhoff’s involvement in honoring Mansfield’s treasurers and history goes beyond his work in Central Park. Another project serves to preserve the memory of the now defunct Wes nghouse Co., which once employed as many as 7,000 people in Mansfield. About all of the old appliance produc on factory has been torn down, but S erhoff was able to salvage a huge steel flywheel from the Wes nghouse power plant. He and his company mounted the big wheel on a three-lot vacant parcel on East Fourth Street, just east of the old Wes nghouse office building. The effort was not a simple one. The wheel is 13 feet high and weighs more than five ton. “There were genera ons of people who worked at Wes nghouse, and we should never let that be forgo en,’’ he said, adding that final plans for the memorial parcel have not yet been completed. Rex’s Landscaping also has an agreement with the Richland County Land Bank to plant trees and shrubs on north-end residen al lots where blighted homes have been demolished. The goal is to make these lots a rac ve to adjoining lot owners to purchase and add to their exis ng lots. This improves the look of the neighborhoods, puts delinquent proper es back on the tax schedules and regreens the north end. Landscaped lots can be obtained for $199. S erhoff said the firm has completed about 75 lots over the past three years. The company itself, on Ashland Road, is located in an abandoned re store it obtained through the Land Bank, and then completed total renova ons. To facilitate its work, the company itself purchased 23 lots in the affected neighborhoods where it stores trees for plan ng on other nearby lots. S erhoff said these lots could eventually be sold or allowed to simply exist as wooded lots in the area. There are two other companies doing the same type of work with the Land Bank, but S erhoff says his firm does the majority of the work. He emphasized his firm prefers to use na ve species. S erhoff said that there is li le ques on his work will con nue for some me with es mates that as many as 4,700 mostly residen al buildings remain for demoli on. S erhoff’s father was Jim S erhoff, a highly-regarded Richland County sheriff who returned honesty and respect to that office following other terms that ended with corrup on. Jon said he o en hears good comments about his father and his efforts to improve law enforcement in the community. It seems apparent he, too, wants to make a las ng posi ve impression in his hometown. Treat yourself and/or family to a day at Shady Lane Farms, just outside of Lexington. Best known for their alpacas, they also offer a diverse opportunity to create new adventures. The idyllic se ng and laid back atmosphere is the property of John and Jean McClintock and their animal family. The star a rac on is of course the alpacas, a herd animal of Peruvian descent, which is distantly related to camels. These docile cri ers are both interes ng and beau ful. They are primarily used for their coat fiber which is shorn once a year in the spring, an event the McClintlocks call “Alpaca Spa Day”. On that day they also receive a complete going over including having their teeth filed, hooves checked, and any needed vaccina ons. The fibrous coat is later spun into yarn or used for a variety of cra projects. Did you know the fiber is warmer than sheep’s wool, hypoallergenic, and flame resistant?

The subjects include blacksmithing (beginner to advanced), Cherokee double walled basket making, jewelry making (using beads and fused glass), and many projects cra ed from gourds grown on the farm. Not to be missed is the farm store which features alpaca fiber products, such as scarves, gloves, sweaters, hats, and jackets. The items are locally made with some imports from Peru. There are also tools and supplies for cra ing; gi s and handmade items from Ohio and around the world. Coming this month on September 22nd and 23rd is ‘Alpaca Days’. The Chamber Founda on’s Popular Economic Club Luncheon Series Begins a New Program Year! We would like to invite you to join a rewarding program that is offered through the Chamber Founda on. Four mes a year, the Economic Club brings world-class speakers to our area for luncheon mee ngs to address areas of concern and interest in the business community. The programs takes very li le of your me, and a por on of the annual membership supports the Young Entrepreneurs Academy of Richland County. Annual Membership in the Economic Club remains $100 for the year. Informa on for the first program will be revealed soon.
