Signs of Hope It’s absolutely incredible to think that this tumultuous journey we have been on ƚŽŐĞƚŚĞƌ ƐƚĂƌƚĞĚ Ă LJĞĂƌ ĂŐŽ͘ / ĚŝƐƟŶĐƚůLJ remember early March 2020 and worrying about whether we would have to cancel the Business Expo…and by the end of March I was not even leaving my house. We learned a year ago how quickly life can change – especially when you least expect it. But in truth, I learned ƚŚĂƚ ůĞƐƐŽŶ ϭϬ LJĞĂƌƐ ĂŐŽ ŝŶ DĂƌĐŚ ϮϬϭϭ ǁŚĞŶ ŵLJ ŵŽŵ ƉĂƐƐĞĚ ĂǁĂLJ ĂŌĞƌ Ă ϭϱͲŵŽŶƚŚ ďĂƩůĞ ǁŝƚŚ ĐĂŶĐĞƌ͘ ǀĞŶ ƚŚŽƵŐŚ ǁĞ ŬŶĞǁ ŚĞƌ ŝůůŶĞƐƐ ǁĂƐ ƚĞƌŵŝŶĂů͕ ŝƚ ǁĂƐ ƐƟůů ƚŚĞ ĚĞĞƉĞƐƚ ŐƵƚ ƉƵŶĐŚ ŽĨ ŵLJ ůŝĨĞ ƚŽ ĂďƐŽƌď͘ / ĚŝĚŶ͛ƚ ŬŶŽǁ ǁŚĂƚ ƚŽ do with myself in the months and years that followed. And yet, here I sit 10 LJĞĂƌƐ ůĂƚĞƌ ƐƟůů ŵŝƐƐŝŶŐ ŵLJ ŵŽŵ ĂƐ ŵƵĐŚ ĂƐ ĞǀĞƌ͕ ďƵƚ ĂůƐŽ ǁŝƚŚ ƚŚĞ ƚĞŶĚĞƌĞƐƚ parts of the grief having healed. I learned from the loss and have grown from it too. Maybe comparing that experience to what we have all lived through over the last year is too much, but it might not be as extreme as you think. Our ůŝǀĞƐ ǁĞƌĞ ƚƵƌŶĞĚ ƵƉƐŝĚĞ ĚŽǁŶ͕ ǁĞ ĞdžƉĞƌŝĞŶĐĞĚ ŝŶĚŝǀŝĚƵĂů ĂŶĚ ĐŽůůĞĐƟǀĞ ůŽƐƐ͕ we changed the way we live on a day-to-day basis. The experience was not something we chose, but rather it was imposed on us by this fast-spreading virus, but we all had to choose how we would individually respond. LJĞĂƌ ůĂƚĞƌ͕ ƚŚĞ ǀĂĐĐŝŶĞ ŝƐ ŶŽǁ ƐƉƌĞĂĚŝŶŐ ĨĂƐƚĞƌ ƚŚĂŶ ƚŚĞ ǀŝƌƵƐ͕ ƌĞŐƵůĂƟŽŶƐ ĂƌĞ ĞĂƐŝŶŐ ĂŶĚ ƚŚĞƌĞ ŝƐ Ă ƌĞĂů ůŝŐŚƚ Ăƚ ƚŚĞ ĞŶĚ ŽĨ ƚŚŝƐ ƚƵŶŶĞů͘ dŚĞ ƋƵĞƐƟŽŶ ƚŚĂƚ ŝƐ ŶŽǁ ŝŶ ĨƌŽŶƚ ŽĨ ƵƐ ŝƐ ƚŚŝƐ ʹ ŚŽǁ ǁŝůů ǁĞ ĞŵĞƌŐĞ ĨƌŽŵ ƚŚŝƐ ƟŵĞ͍ ŶĚ ŵĂLJďĞ Ă ƐĞĐŽŶĚ ƋƵĞƐƟŽŶ ʹ ŚŽǁ ǁŝůů ǁĞ ŐƌŽǁ ĨƌŽŵ ƚŚŝƐ ĞdžƉĞƌŝĞŶĐĞ͍ KŶĞ ƚŚŝŶŐ ŝƐ ĨŽƌ ƐƵƌĞ ʹ ǁŚŝůĞ ǁĞ ŚĂǀĞ ŚĂĚ Ă ĐŽůůĞĐƟǀĞ ĞdžƉĞƌŝĞŶĐĞ ƚŽŐĞƚŚĞƌ͕ our individual journey with COVID has been unique. Some have lost loved ones, others have been ravaged by the virus, some have lost jobs, others ŚĂǀĞ ŶĞĂƌůLJ ůŽƐƚ ƚŚĞŝƌ ďƵƐŝŶĞƐƐ͕ ƐŽŵĞ ĂƌĞ ĚŽŝŶŐ ũƵƐƚ ĮŶĞ͕ ŽƚŚĞƌƐ ĂƌĞ ƐƚƌƵŐŐůŝŶŐ ǁŝƚŚ ĨŽŽĚ ĂŶĚ ŚŽƵƐŝŶŐ ŝŶƐĞĐƵƌŝƚLJ͘ >Ğƚ͛Ɛ ƚĂŬĞ ƟŵĞ ƚŽ ůŝƐƚĞŶ ƚŽ ĞĂĐŚ ŽƚŚĞƌ ʹ really listen, not just wait for a chance to start talking. And let’s choose to ĮŐƵƌĞ ŚŽǁ ƚŽ ŵŽǀĞ ĨŽƌǁĂƌĚ ƚŽŐĞƚŚĞƌ͘ DLJ ĐŽŶŇŝĐƚĞĚ ĨĞĞůŝŶŐƐ ĂďŽƵƚ DĂƌĐŚ ĂƌĞ ŶŽƚ ŐŽŝŶŐ ĂǁĂLJ ĂŶLJƟŵĞ ƐŽŽŶ͘ Ƶƚ ĨŽƌ ƚŚĞ ĮƌƐƚ ƟŵĞ ŝŶ Ă ǁŚŝůĞ͕ ƚŚĞ ƐĞĞĚƐ ŽĨ ŚŽƉĞ ĂƌĞ ĮůůŝŶŐ ŵLJ ŚĞĂƌƚ͘ DĂLJďĞ ŝƚ͛Ɛ ƚŚĞ ƐƵŶŶLJ ĚĂLJƐ͕ ƚŚĞ ǀĂĐĐŝŶĞ ĚŝƐƚƌŝďƵƟŽŶ ƉŝĐŬŝŶŐ ƵƉ ƉĂĐĞ͕ Žƌ ƌĞĐŽŶŶĞĐƟŶŐ with friends and family. In November 2020, we kicked off the sixth year of Young Entrepreneurs Academy in Richland County. With five amazing students enrolled, we have been meeting once a month in both face-to-face and virtual settings. So far, these students have created a business idea, business name, and are currently building their business plans. In the upcoming weeks, they will work with mentors, graphic designers to create their business logos, and prep for the Investor Panel Presentation in April. In the first month of The Workforce Pulse, I want to focus on two specific resources available to employers that assist with Recruiting, Retaining, and Developing your Workforce. Richland County Job & Family Services oversees the “On-the-Job” and “Incumbent Worker” Training programs – both of which offer funding for the skill development of local employees. “On-the-Job” Training is a federally funded program that helps employers hire and train individuals for long term employment. Employers can get: • Help recruiting, pre=screening, and hiring new employees • Held in developing a workforce trained in the skills they need to thrive • Reimbursement for a portion of the trainee’s regular wages during the training period (up to 50% of the wages for as long as 6 months) “Incumbent Worker” Training is dedicated to supporting specific training needs and projects of local businesses to ensure that that existing employees’ skills meet the need of the industry.
