As we progress through the winter season our minds turn to visions of all things happy and joyful; friends, family, food, warmth, to name a few; but for some this is not reality. The truth is some women face loss of habitat, ﬁnancial security, and worst of all physical injury; due to domes c violence, a scourge that although year around, increases during the winter and holiday season.

When a person decides to leave an abusive rela onship, they o en have nowhere to go. The choices for many are simply staying in the violent environment, going to a shelter, or living on the streets. Reluctance to leave includes leaving pets behind, disrup ng children’s school a endance, financial security and abandoning most personal belongings. In the Mansfield, Richland County area help is available through the Domes c Violence Shelter, Inc. The shelter can provide transporta on from the abusive home to the shelter which gives immediate safety, respite care, and suppor ve services. According to Execu ve Director, Kathy Ezawa, the recidivism rate is about six or seven visits, before the final determina on to leave is made. In addi on to safe housing (loca ons not disclosed to the public), the shelter provides guests the opportunity to fix their own meals and eat in a dining room as opposed to a cafeteria, play with their children in an enclosed playground, have a clean comfortable room, internet access and quiet places to read. Support groups, legal advocacy, life skills coaching and referrals are some of the services offered. The overall goal is to protect and inspire vic ms that there are be er opportuni es in life. What is domes c violence? The most common answer is physical violence inflicted on a spouse, however the truth is not so simple. Any form of maltreatment including coercion, threats, in mida on, isola on, stalking, emo onal abuse, sexual abuse, or economic abuse used to control the other partner cons tutes domes c violence. Abuse strikes couples of all races, religions, social economic status and sexual orienta ons. Risk factors for men or women becoming vic ms or abusers include poverty, lack of educa on, witnessing family violence as a child, and a tudes of male dominance, enhanced by substance or alcohol abuse. In some cases this abuse con nues to be endorsed in some socie es through sanc oning of the subjuga on of women and lack of legal protec ons for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender vic ms. Although both males and females can be recipients, the preponderance, sta s cally, are women at about 85%. The seasonal increase is due to both addi onal money demands and the poten al for more social interac ons, especially with family. Remember, the drivers are power and control. DV is the leading cause of injury to women, more than auto accidents, muggings and rape combined. Every 9 seconds a women in the US is assaulted or beaten. Everyday in the US more than 3 women are murdered by a boyfriend or husband. Cost is es mated at $4.1 billion for direct health care services. Loss of produc vity is es mated at $1.8 billion. Studies show a direct correla on with homelessness, especially women with children. One in four women will experience or have ﬁrst level direct knowledge of a vic m or abuser.

How can you help? Although grants and other ﬁnancial op ons help, there is always a need for more; think electric, natural gas, insurance, food, transporta on, etc. Direct dona on of items such as clothing, linens, toiletries, children’s items, etc. are always welcome. Cash or check is another way! Don’t forget volunteers are also needed! Call their oﬃce for guidance if required, at 419-774-5845. Their 24-Hour Crisis Line is 800-931-SAFE (7233).

Today dinner will be included. Day 3: Glasgow - Glencoe - Ballachulish Enjoy a leisurely morning in Glasgow before visiting one of Scotland’s renowned whisky distilleries. Day 4: Ballachulish - Isle of Skye - Ballachulish Take a stunning drive along the “Road to the Isles” and over the Skye Bridge to the legendary Isle of Skye, also known in poetry and

Then, visit Armadale Castle & Gardens* and the Museum of the Isles to learn about island life and the history of Skye. Conclude your visit with views of the isle from yet another vantage point during a ferry crossing back to the mainland. Returning to Ballachulish, see Glenfinnan where Bonnie Prince Charlie rallied the clansmen for battle during the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion. Today breakfast and dinner will be included. Day 5: Ballachulish - Loch Ness - Thurso Today, enjoy stunning and unspoiled landscapes as you journey further into the Highlands. Visit the striking ruins of Urquhart Castle before enjoying a cruise on Loch Ness, one of Britain’s most scenic bodies of water. Keep your eyes open — you never know when Nessie will appear! Travel through the Great Glen, famous for its many lochs (lakes). Your day concludes in Thurso. Today breakfast will be included. Day 6: Thurso - Orkney Islands - Thurso A day of adventure awaits as you voyage by ferry to the Orkney Islands** – once a Viking stronghold off the coast of Scotland. porpoises and seals. A local guide introduces this magical place that very few visitors to Scotland get to experience. Visit Skara Brae where you will discover the remains of a Neolithic village built at the same time as the Great Pyramids in Egypt. Next, pass the prehistoric Ring of Brodgar, reported to be older than Stonehenge. Visit the town of Viking Kirkwall before returning to the mainland. Today breakfast and dinner will be included. Day 7: Thurso - Eastern Highlands Today you will visit Culloden Battlefield. On this spot in April 1746, a half-hour battle changed the course of Scotland’s history. Day 8: Eastern Highlands - Pitlochry - St. Andrews - Edinburgh Begin your day with a visit to a family-run farm set in the heart of the Highlands.
