It was a beau ful (and warm) summer day for our 4th Annual Member Apprecia on Picnic! Over 200 members enjoyed a laid back lunch provided by Pump House Catering, drinks by Pepsi and Culligan of Mansfield , ice cream from Paul's Drive-In, and goodie bags from the Ambassadors Commi ee and Staker Dental! Thanks to Ricky Mitchell for the live entertainment as well! We are very excited to announce that our Chamber President, Jodie Perry, earned her Cer fied Chamber Execu ve (CCE) designa on at last week's ACCE Conference in Des Moines, Iowa. Since the first CCE designa on was conferred more than 40 years ago, about 500 professionals have become cer fied. CCE is recognized by many as the highest, and most elite, professional designa on in the chamber of commerce profession. Please join us in congratula ng Jodie on earning this dis nc on! We were honored to be on hand for the Flag Raising & Dedica on of this new huge flagpole along 71 in Bellville (behind Loves). Mayor Teri Brenkus (Village of Bellville) spearheaded this project and many, many local professionals and contractors donated their me, talents and resources to make it all happen. This was a wonderful project of the Richland Community Development Group (RCDG) Bellville Beau fica on Sector! Keep an eye out for it as you drive by!
He's cleaning up Mansfield, one piece of litter at a time Nelson Shogren may have the record amount of me spent picking up trash in and around Mansfield. d. He may also have the dis nc on of picking up the greatest variety of discarded items. He has walked streets, sidewalks and parking lots to snare glass bo les, aluminum cans, and plain old nly paper. But, he has also waded Mansfield streams to collect plas c and other trash items that not only he look bad but provide health risks for swimming fish, wading birds and other creatures from the waterways. He has even hiked four-lane U.S. 30 to pick up everything from paper to auto parts. “I have picked up enough car parts over the years that I could almost build a car,” Shogren said, adding ng he only needed a chassis. Kim Hildreth, program coordinator for the engineering department, coordinates the li er preven on and public involvement programs for the city. She agreed that there are very few other people who ho ble have been as ac ve picking up li er as Shogren has. She said he par cipates in nearly every available an program, including Earth stewardship programs, the downtown Clean Sweep, and Opera on Clean Sweep (S.O.S.) - A stream clean-up program. He has been at it for some 20 years, she believes. As an example of the volume of li er that Shogren has helped pick up, last year’s Earth Stewardship hip program alone saw about 20,000 pounds of li er cleaned up in the local community. There were 51 projects in last year’s stewardship program, with the majority of them being li er pick-up projects. Shogren, 63, said the waterway clean-up is the most challenging of the li er projects. He said the he sh streams not only contain paper and plas c washed in from areas upstream, but also piles of trash inten onally dumped into the water. Wading and cleaning the streams is par cularly important because the plas c and other materials ials can break down and harm wildlife,” he said. Shogren is a life-long Mansfielder who graduated from Madison High School. His post high school educa on took a couple of turns. He a ended Mansfield-OSU and graduated from North Central State College with a degree in electronic engineering. He later graduated from Ashland University with a journalism degree. Shogren worked for 30 years at the phone company that was called Sprint when he started and Century Link when he le . He spent most of his me in the communica ons department. His focus on environmental issues has been a straight thread throughout his life. “I have always felt that people who enter a clean area like a park are less likely to li er than they would in an area already containing li er,” Shogren said, explaining that he organizes a neighborhood clean-up project each year in his neighborhood along Charles Mill Lake. Other favorite spots for him to pick up trash is in city parks like Liberty, Middle, and North Lake. He also works along the B & O Bike Trail. Again, part of his focus on parks is in the streams that cut through them. Shogren is also involved with other efforts that focus on community health and environmental issues. He par cipates in Richland Moves!, a group that promotes cycling and ac ve transporta on in Mansfield and Richland county. Shogren is an ac ve cyclist and said his most recent part- me job since leaving Century Link is to take care of bikes at Dick’s Spor ng goods. “I can’t believe I get paid for having fun,” he said, adding that he goes for a bike ride nearly every day. When asked how far he normally travels on his daily rides, he said about 6 miles when he is pressed for me and as many as 50 if he has most of a day. Nelson’s father was noted Mansfield ar st Kinley Shogren. He said his father probably painted as many as 3,000 local scenic pictures, including some depic ons of historic buildings and se ngs in Mansfield. He said he believes his father’s ar s c talents may have been what mo vated him toward cleaning up li er. “I always have wanted everything to look picture perfect,” he concluded.

YEA! Is Entering its Fourth Year!
Get Involved! This fall, area middle and high school students will have the unique opportunity to start and launch their own REAL businesses or social movements by par cipa ng in the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!). Over the course of the 25-week program, students will brainstorm ideas, write business plans, pitch their plans to a group of investors, obtain funding, launch their enterprise and actually sell their products or services. Along the way they will register their business with the State of Ohio, open a business bank account, and get a tax ID number. They will work with business professionals to build a brand iden ty and create a website and a social media presence. The students will hear from local business owners, take trips to area businesses to see how they func on, and have a personal business mentor to guide them along the process. Students are able to create a business by themselves or they are welcome to start a business with a group of other students. At the end of the program, the students will par cipate in a Trade Show where their businesses, products, and services will be on display for the community to see. th

A bit of background… The Richland Area Chamber of Commerce is thrilled to be bringing the Young Entrepreneurs to Richland County for its fourth year. YEA! was developed at the University of Rochester in 2004 with the support of a grant from the Kauffman Founda on. In 2015, the Richland Chamber Founda on began the program right here in Richland County. YEA! guides middle and high school students through the process of star ng and running a legi mate business or social movement over the course of an academic year. YEA! has graduated hundreds of students since 2004, who have started well over 700 businesses and social movements! Kids start as students and graduate as CEOs!

What Execu ve Director Jason Larson calls “the best kept secret in Richland County” is your opportunity to hike on level to moderate terrain amongst some of the best that Mothers Nature has to offer locally. We are talking about the Richland County Park District and its Gorman Nature Center on Lexington Ave.

Our park district was started in 1965 with a generous dona on of 20 acres from Jim Gorman and his sister, Jean Bate. In the ensuing years addi onal dona ons were made bringing today’s total to almost 150 acres. The original ques on was ‘how do we best use this land’? Recognizing that numerous recrea onal opportuni es already existed the decision was made to create a nature center. Today over 6 miles of mowed trails, prairies, wooded areas, and a pond are yours to explore. Trail maps are readily available. The trails are open 365 days a year from dawn to dusk. They are also dog friendly with the only requirements being that they be kept on a leash and under control at all mes, and of course poop pick up (bags and a trash can are available). The Center sees 20/25K visitors each year, many are school aged children on a class adventure. The goal is to educate and inform these young ci zens about the wonders of our natural world. On display in the center are various creatures that inhabit our area, and yes you can touch the snake, if staff is available. The Centers hours are 9-3 Tues. – Sat. The Park District also includes the B&O Bike Trail, Hemlock Falls, and coming soon is Camp Mowana aka. Fleming Falls (at no taxpayer expense). Find lots more info at: www.gormannaturecenter.org. We have all been told by our doctors, read in a magazine, or seen on the internet the key to be er overall health is exercise. Many of us create great excuses as to why this is next to impossible; too busy, doesn’t fit the schedule, don’t know what to do, and the list goes on…. In the month of June the Snap Fitness facility on Ashland Road was taken over by partners James Lozier and Brian Russell. In an ins nc ve moment they knew this was their des ny. The desire to help others realize the poten al of being fit became the driver.

With backgrounds in the hospitality industry and healthcare, the first order of business became cleanliness. The second was to create programs that would appeal to a large variety of individuals. The result was the requisite cardio workouts, something for body builders, and a Zumba class. In addi on they offer something called Cardio Drumming, which involves actual drumming at moderate pace with a few moves thrown in. Coming next month is Senior Fit class, just for older folks, with the rou nes accompanied by 50/60’s rock music. Further down the road is an advanced edi on of the drumming rou ne with a more aggressive pace called Pound. The facility is open 24/7 to members, each issued a personal card which opens the always locked door. Think you are too old? The members range from 94 to 14 years old. In March 2018, 15 individuals took a big step forward in the re-imagination of Richland County’s greatest opportunity, Mansfield’s Central Business District. The group attended South by Southwest Interactive (SXSW) in Austin, Texas. They spent a week immersed in the world-renowned festival of ideas and technology in hopes of bringing the ideas back to our community. Since then the group has met on a regular basis with a team of 26 advisors to begin the process of creating a plan for our community. Join them on August 27th as they provide more information about the project, how it started, and what are the next steps. Event fee is $35 for non-members.
