Hello, 2026! We love the fresh start a new year brings.
As planners by nature, there’s something almost sacred about a blank calendar — open space filled with promise, possibility, and purpose.
This year feels like opening a beautifully wrapped gift, one month at a time. Twelve carefully tucked surprises, each holding its own opportunities, lessons, and moments of joy. With every turn of the page, hopes feel bigger, dreams feel closer, and the invitation to grow feels unmistakable.
We see Lola Magazine much the same way — a gift we are honored to unwrap alongside you. Each year brings six new editions, each one a gathering place where longtime friends reconnect and new friendships begin. It’s where stories unfold, creativity is celebrated, and women come together to share wisdom, beauty, and life as it truly is.
In this issue, we step into the season with our much-loved Winter Bridal Edition — a celebration of love, new beginnings, and the many ways couples choose to say I do. Inside, you’ll find a thoughtfully curated collection of bridal inspiration, from courthouse ceremonies and destination weddings to timeless, traditional venues close to home. We’re also sharing helpful insights on honeymoon travel, along with glimpses of beautifully designed weddings that remind us just how meaningful the details can be.
And of course, it wouldn’t be winter in Louisiana without a sweet nod to one of Mardi Gras’ most beloved traditions — King Cake. As we look ahead, we also turn inward, exploring personal health and wellness to help ensure that 2026 begins on strong, intentional footing.

Letter from Editor & Contributors
As we step fully into the year ahead, our vision feels both exhilarating and just a little daring — in the best way. We are dreaming boldly, creating thoughtfully, and expanding with intention through print, digital storytelling, and experiences designed to connect women in meaningful ways. Our hope is that Lola continues to inspire you to live well, dream generously, and feel deeply connected to your community.
Each year, many of us choose a word to guide our journey — a quiet compass for the months ahead. For us, that word is unlimited. Perhaps it’s our love of storytelling or our belief that faith, courage, and creativity open doors we never imagined possible. Either way, we’re leaning in, trusting that when we dare to rise, beautiful things follow.
Thank you for being part of this story. You inspire us more than you know, and every page we create is shaped by the women who walk this journey with us.
Here’s to 2026 — and to stepping boldly into all that awaits.
With gratitude,
Sarah & Ellyn

HEART HEALTH during pregnancy
Written by Kalgi Modi, MD
Pregnancy is a demanding time for the heart. The American Heart Association (AHA) calls it the heart’s “first natural stress test” as the heart works harder to support both mother and baby. Knowing what is normal helps women spot any warning signs early.

Article 1 p1: Ochsner
How Pregnancy Impacts The Heart
As pregnancy progresses, the cardiovascular system adjusts to support the mother and the developing baby.
Increased Blood Volume And Cardiac Output
Blood volume increases by about 30% to 50%. This may cause a faster heart rate and mild shortness of breath with exertion, both of which are considered regular physiological changes.
Vascular Changes And Blood Pressure Shifts
Hormonal changes in early pregnancy cause blood vessels to relax and dilate, lowering blood pressure. However, some women develop gestational hypertension or preeclampsia later in pregnancy. Both of those conditions require prompt management and raise long-term risk for heart disease.
Heartbeat Changes And Palpitations
Increased blood circulation may cause palpitations or changes in heart rate. Occasional palpitations are common, but persistent or severe symptoms may signal an underlying arrhythmia.

Cardiac Stress And Potential Heart Muscle Weakness
For most women, cardiovascular changes during pregnancy remain within a healthy range. In rare cases, heart muscle weakness (peripartum cardiomyopathy) can develop in late pregnancy or postpartum. Symptoms include fatigue, swelling or shortness of breath. They require immediate medical attention. Recognizing cardiovascular changes during pregnancy helps expectant mothers understand what is typical and when further evaluation may be necessary.
Evidence-Based Ways To Protect Your Heart During Pregnancy
Adopting essential eight heart-healthy habits during pregnancy (such as those outlined in this section) can support cardiovascular function and reduce the risk of complications.
• Follow a heart-healthy diet. Proper nutrition is essential for preventing high blood pressure and supporting healthy weight gain during pregnancy
• Engage in regular, moderate physical activity (such as walking, swimming or prenatal yoga) to strengthen the heart and support circulation.
• Manage pre-pregnancy conditions like obesity, hypertension, diabetes or high cholesterol
• Attend prenatal appointments to monitor blood pressure, heart rate and other key cardiovascular indicators.
• Avoid smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke. Limit caffeine intake if recommended by your healthcare provider.
Page 7
• Practice stress-reduction techniques (such as deep breathing, meditation or gentle stretching) to help reduce cardiovascular strain.
• Have good sleep hygiene and sleep on your side (particularly after 20 weeks) to improve blood flow and reduce pressure on major blood vessels.
WARNING SIGNS That Require Immediate Medical Attention
According to the AHA, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of pregnancy-related death in the United States. Seek immediate medical care if you experience any of the following issues:
• Chest pain, pressure or tightness
• Shortness of breath while resting or sudden worsening of breathlessness
• Rapid, irregular or persistent heart palpitations
• Severe swelling of the legs, feet or hands
• Sudden or excessive weight gain accompanied by swelling or shortness of breath
• Fainting, dizziness or near-fainting spells
• Severe headaches, vision changes or upper abdominal pain (may signal preeclampsia)
• Do not forget that breastfeeding and 4thtrimester care can further reduce heart disease in women.
Cardiovascular risks may persist after delivery, especially in the first six weeks. As many as two-thirds of heart-related pregnancy complications could be prevented by appropriate observation, prevention and early treatment strategies. Any symptoms during the first six weeks after delivery should be checked by a doctor. Supporting heart health during pregnancy involves making informed lifestyle choices, regular health monitoring and ongoing communication with your healthcare provider. If you experience any of the symptoms or risk factors previously discussed, your care team can guide you through a healthy pregnancy and postpartum recovery.

Planning with Purpose: An Expert ’ s Top Tips for 2026 Weddings
IWritten by Kayla Jackson Southard, Owner of Jackson Southard Events
n 2026, elevated weddings are placing a strong emphasis on experience. Food and beverage are no longer simply part of the schedule, they are a focal point of the celebration. Tray-passed hors d'oeuvres, bespoke cocktails, and interactive elements such as late-night bites transform dining into a memorable guest experience. Lighting is also being used with intention to shape the atmosphere throughout the day. From warm, cinematic tones during the ceremony to layered, lounge-style ambiance that evolves as the evening unfolds, intentional lighting design helps guide the mood of the celebration and creates a seamless transition from ceremony to reception.

Stationery also continues to emerge as a design element of its own, with couples investing in hand-drawn illustrations, letterpress, and fine calligraphy that feel like art and serve as lasting keepsakes. And of course, the guest experience continues to take center stage, with traditional favors being replaced by more thoughtful, personalized touches. From curated welcome moments and meaningful guest gifts to charitable gestures that reflect the couple’s values, these details are designed to make guests feel genuinely appreciated and leave a lasting impression.
Here are my top tips to guide couples as they begin their wedding planning journey:
Find Inspiration Beyond Other Weddings
The most meaningful wedding designs don’t come from recreating past celebrations. True inspiration comes from you and your partner, reflecting your personalities, stories, and shared experiences. During our first consultation, I encourage my clients to share everything from favorite travel destinations and architectural styles to home interiors, fashion, and culinary experiences. This helps us develop a deeper understanding of who you are as a couple. When collaborating with a designer, the goal is to craft a celebration that is truly original and one that feels personal, intentional, and uniquely yours.

Plan for the “Unplanned” Costs
When establishing your overall wedding budget, it’s wise to build in a 10% cushion for unexpected expenses. Weddings are full of surprises whether it’s an additional design element you fall in love with, an upgraded menu selection or a last-minute logistical need, this buffer ensures you’re prepared. It also covers overlooked necessities that only become apparent as the planning unfoldseverything from extra rentals to small but meaningful personal touches. Having this flexibility not only reduces stress but also allows you to make financial decisions with confidence, keeping your choices intentional rather than reactive and helping you maintain a sense of control over the day you’ve envisioned.
Hire Your Planner First
Before securing any other vendors, your first step should be hiring your wedding planner. Beyond providing expert guidance and access to trusted, reputable professionals, a planner’s most valuable role begins with a comprehensive budget analysis and strategic planning. From selecting a venue to choosing your photography “Strive to create a wedding that inspires others, rather than one that simply gets copied.”
team and entertainment, this ensures that every decision you make is intentional and aligned with your overall vision and financial priorities. By hiring your wedding planner first, you gain a partner who can help identify where to splurge, where to save, and how to balance unexpected costs. This will make the entire planning process smoother, more intentional, and far less stressful.
Without understanding how your budget is best allocated, it’s nearly impossible to know which vendors realistically align with your priorities. As I often remind my clients, budgets naturally ebb and flow. If there’s a category you want to splurge on, we simply revise another area to balance the investment.
Page 12
Planning your wedding is one of the most exciting chapters of your life. As you embark on it, make it personal and fun! Big or small, every decision is an opportunity to tell your story and celebrate your love. All while creating memories that will last a lifetime. As your wedding planner, my goal is to guide you with confidence, creativity, and care, which helps you navigate choices, avoid common pitfalls, and uncover inspiration that truly reflects who you are as a couple. Remember, what matters most is crafting a celebration that feels authentic, unforgettable and joyful. Don’t forget to enjoy the process as it’s the experiences along the way that shape the final celebration and create the lasting memories you’ll cherish for many years to come.

Your Guide to Radiant, Wedding Day Skin
A Thoughtful Timeline for Brides, Mothers, and Special Guests
By Dr. Lindsey Pennington
Whether you are the bride, the mother of the bride or groom, or a guest attending a oncein-a-lifetime celebration, feeling confident in your skin makes every moment more enjoyable. The secret to looking effortlessly radiant on a big day isn’t a last-minute fix, it’s thoughtful planning. Starting early allows time for a customized approach created alongside a board-certified facial plastic surgeon, ensuring every treatment aligns seamlessly with your schedule. As women, we understand the pressure we place on ourselves to feel just right on a special day, and we believe there truly isn’t a concern we can’t help you address.
A Personalized Consultation:
The First Step
engagements, showers, bachelorette parties, and celebrations leading up to the wedding day.
Non-Surgical Treatments for Skin Quality and Tightening
For brides and mothers of the bride or groom, we encourage a complimentary consultation as soon as the date is set. During this visit, we perform a thorough facial analysis and work together to define your goals. From there, we create a tailored plan designed to enhance your natural features while respecting your timeline and lifestyle. Ideally, this process begins six to twelve months before the event. This allows time to trial new skincare, schedule in-office treatments, and when appropriate plan for procedures that require healing and collagen regeneration. This window also accommodates the busy calendar that often comes with
One of our most popular, non-invasive treatments is Morpheus8, which combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy to stimulate collagen, improve skin texture, tighten laxity, and refine pores—all with minimal downtime. It can be performed on the face, neck, and chest and is suitable for a wide range of ages and skin types. These treatments are highly operatordependent, which is why we believe they should always be overseen by an experienced physician. Treatment settings must be customized based on anatomy, skin tone, age, and individual goals to achieve beautiful, natural-looking results.
Another favorite for event preparation is microneedling paired with topical exosomes and tranexamic acid (TXA). This advanced combination creates controlled microchannels in the skin, allowing regenerative ingredients to penetrate more deeply. Exosomes support cellular communication and collagen production, while TXA helps improve

pigmentation, sun damage, and uneven tone. A series of three treatments spaced four to six weeks apart is typically recommended for optimal results, delivering brighter, smoother, more radiant skin with minimal downtime.
Some concerns may also benefit from laser treatments, which is why early planning is so valuable—it allows flexibility for scheduling and healing while ensuring results are fully realized before the event.
Restoring Balance and Soft Volume
Approximately four to six months before the event is an ideal time to consider facial volume restoration. Hyaluronic acid fillers such as Juvederm or Restylane can subtly enhance areas like the cheeks, temples, jawline, lips, and nasolabial folds. For those looking to improve skin quality and stimulate their body’s own collagen, Sculptra is an excellent option that enhances radiance, texture, and overall facial harmony over time.
When performed by an experienced cosmetic physician, these treatments restore balance and softness- never an overdone look. Many patients come in with one specific concern, while others prefer a comprehensive consultation to guide them. Either approach is perfectly fine; our role is to help you feel confident in every decision.
Medical-Grade Skincare:
The Foundation of Every Plan
No treatment plan is complete without a customized medical-grade skincare regimen. Whether used alone or alongside in-office treatments, the right skincare supports collagen, elastin, and overall skin renewal.
Advanced formulations such as A.G.E. Interrupter Ultra Serum have been shown in clinical studies to visibly tighten skin and improve smoothness with consistent use. P-TIOX has demonstrated visible reduction in multiple types of expression lines while enhancing texture and radiance, with noticeable results as early as one week.
For concerns such as acne, sun damage, pigmentation, or redness, beginning a targeted skincare routine four to
six months before the event allows time for meaningful improvement and lasting results.
Surgical Options for Planning Ahead
For brides or mothers seeking more definitive rejuvenation, surgical options can be thoughtfully incorporated when started early enough. Procedures such as eyelid surgery, brow lifting, lip lifting, or facial contouring can refresh the face while maintaining a natural, elegant appearance.
These procedures are best considered six to nine months in advance, allowing adequate time for healing and refinement. When approached with careful planning and an artistic eye, surgical rejuvenation offers long-lasting results that photograph beautifully and age gracefully.
Final Touches Before the Big Day
Three to four months before is the ideal time for neuromodulators such as Botox or Dysport. These treatments take about two weeks to reach full effect, and planning ahead allows time for adjustments so everything looks just right.
In the final months, we also recommend professional facials to enhance glow and hydration. Our DiamondGlow Deluxe facial is a favorite for event prep. This non-invasive treatment exfoliates, extracts, and infuses customized serums in one session, delivering immediate radiance with no downtime. Treatments can be tailored to address hydration, brightening, acne, or collagen support.

The Art of Choosing a Home
Bridal Registry Story by
Ellyn McKinney
I grew up in an era when bridal dreams were shaped not by glowing screens, but by glass cases, velvet-lined displays, and the steady hands of women who loved you. Long before digital wish lists, brides-to-be made thoughtful selections for their future homes from walls filled with fine china, polished silver flatware, and sparkling crystal meant to grace a well-set table.
What began as an idea at Marshall Field’s Department Store in Chicago during the 1920s eventually made its way south, where brides were guided by generational wisdom — and strong opinions. Clarkes Jewelers added high-end silver, china and crystal to their jewelry counter – creating a carefully crafted one-stop shop for bridal selections in Shreveport. Not long after, in West Shreveport, The Gift House, owned by Shirley Kerr and Mildred Walker opened as a small specialty boutique that felt like a treasure chest. For a little girl with fairytale dreams, it became the place where I first began to imagine my future home. Brides of my generation didn’t start their married lives online. They started them here — where selection was an experience, not a scroll.
part of the ritual. Bridal registries weren’t about practicality then. They were about taste, style, and the home you hoped to create long before turning the key in the front door. I remember choosing my own modest pieces: Fostoria Navarre in blue, delicate as a watercolor. Noritake Marywood, elegant and timeless. My stainless was Oneida — polished and proper — because good flatware matters. Even now, when I open the china cabinet or slide open a drawer, I can see the women who helped shape those choices. I can still hear their voices.
Advertiser: The Art of Choosing a Home (Bridal Registry)
Though the modern bridal registry was formalized in 1924, the tradition is far older. For centuries, brides prepared for marriage through a trousseau — linens, quilts, and tableware gathered over time. The boutique registry was simply the American continuation of that lineage — a hope chest, curated with intention.
At The Gift House, brides chose china, silver, and crystal with the care an artist gives a palette. Department stores had bridal counters, but the boutique offered something deeper: intimacy, heritage, and ceremony. When a bride walked through the door, she wasn’t browsing — she was envisioning her life. And she didn’t come alone.
Her mother brought wisdom. Her grandmother brought tradition. Close family friends brought opinions — some welcome, some less so. Shirley Kerr brought the keen awareness to notice when the bride’s eyes sparkled a certain way as she held a beautiful piece in her hands. And that was
One tradition I miss deeply is the way wedding gifts were displayed in the bride’s parents’ home. After each shower, every piece was arranged with care, allowing friends and family to admire the gifts, note the bride’s taste, and imagine the life unfolding before her. It was more than polite. It was the blessing of her community. Today, gifts arrive in cardboard boxes, often without a handwritten note. Somewhere along the way, something sacred has been traded for convenience.
There is still something heart-stirring about walking into a local shop — Lewis Gifts in Shreveport, The Muffin Tin in Monroe, or any beloved specialty boutique — and watching a bride hold a piece of china in her hands. A local registry isn’t simply a shopping list- it’s a ceremony. Maybe it’s time to return to those aisles — mother by your side, grandmother watching with pride — and choose a plate you’ll display proudly in your home. Maybe the gift isn’t the china at all. Maybe the gift is the choosing. Maybe the gift is in keeping a lovely tradition.

The Artistry of Eddie Colvin Design A Return to Beauty

Some creatives never stop seeing the world through a lens of beauty. Even when life leads them down different paths, the calling remains— quietly waiting for the right moment to bloom again.
Eddie Colvin is one of those rare creatives.
to floral design— but the way he gets to know his clients. Eddie listens. He observes. He develops a styling language that reflects not only the event, but the people at its center. The result is floral design that consistently exceeds expectations and feels deeply personal.
Advertorial p1: Eddie Colvin Design
Submitted/Ready for Layout
Today, Eddie is once again available for special events, business parties, bridal showers, luncheons, weddings, and receptions—and his return to floral design feels less like a comeback and more like a natural continuation of a gift that has always been present. Eddie doesn’t simply design florals; he creates atmosphere. He takes the heart of a client’s vision and elevates it into something immersive, intentional, and unforgettable.
What sets Eddie apart is not just his technical skill— though he is truly a master of artistry when it comes
Eddie has been a leader in the community of florists through the years, beginning when he owned and operated Consider the Lilies—a beloved floral shop that many still remember fondly. What was once recognized as an exceptional florist has evolved into something even more refined. Eddie has earned his place as an accomplished floral designer whose elevated style consistently evokes the kind of oohs and ahhs reserved for true artistry.
His designs do not sit on tables simply to be admired—they belong to the space. Florals flow naturally through venues, enhancing architecture, light, and movement, creating harmony rather than repetition. Each arrangement feels intentional, never duplicated, yet
beautifully cohesive from room to room.
Eddie’s professional calling is uniquely bivocational. Alongside his wife, Shannon, he is a highly sought-after worship leader whose ministry to families and churches is deep and lasting. Together, they serve with authenticity, compassion, and faith— values that quietly inform Eddie’s approach to design as well. His work carries a sense of reverence: for people, for moments, and for beauty itself.
Over time, Eddie’s career expanded beyond his work in local churches, allowing his long-standing love for floral artistry to rise again. That return feels timely—and important. In a world of trends and fast design, Eddie Colvin brings something enduring: thoughtful craftsmanship, trusted collaboration, and a creative eye shaped by years of experience and service.
Lola is honored to help share this next chapter. For those planning meaningful gatherings—whether intimate or grand—Eddie Colvin Design offers more than florals. He offers vision, partnership, and beauty that lingers long after the last guest leaves.

Client Reviews
I could not recommend Eddie Colvin enough! He listened and worked with me to make sure he knew exactly what I wanted. A year later I am still amazed by his work. The florals were everything I could have imagined. Eddie puts so much detail, thought, and hard work in everything he creates.

We knew we were in great hands and could trust his creative design and talents. Eddie turned a vision into elegance from the bouquet to the centerpieces and a 20ft arch into a floral work of art.

Beyond the Beach Reimagining the Modern Honeymoon
Written by Jessica Comegys
Beach- Honeymoon
Istill remember the first time I drifted into that sleep story about the Orient Express, one of those honey-voiced narrations meant to soothe you into dreaming. Instead, it electrified my imagination. Suddenly I wasn’t lying in bed in Louisiana. I was on a quiet platform in Paris at first light, wrapped in a silk-soft mist and the perfume of fresh baguettes drifting in from somewhere just beyond the station walls. Before me stood the legendary navy-and-gold train, shimmering like a promise. A porter lifted a white-gloved hand in greeting. Silver buckles on vintage trunks clicked in succession. The whistle sounded, a deep, resonant note that felt like the beginning of something.
But the train wasn’t the whole fantasy. It was merely the golden thread stitching together perhaps the most impossibly romantic route a honeymooner could dream of: Paris to the Amalfi Coast, with nights bookending the journey like gilded pages in a love story. Because you wouldn’t simply board the train and disappear. You’d linger. You’d let the anticipation breathe.
I imagined arriving in Paris days before departure, checking into a Haussmann-lined boutique hotel where the French windows opened onto wrought-iron balconies and the city unfurled below like a watercolor. Mornings would be slow and indulgent: café crème, pastries still warm from the oven, wandering hand in hand through the Musée Rodin gardens, pausing often because beauty demands it. Evenings would be candlelit bistro tables and whispered toasts, savoring the delicious tension of knowing something extraordinary was waiting.
And then the day would come. You packed the dress reserved only for the most important dinners, the linen suit that feels like a second skin, a small bottle of perfume for the train. Together, you’d make your way to the platform radiant with ceremony. And somewhere in the faint curl of steam rising from the locomotive, you can almost imagine Agatha Christie herself gloved, poised, quietly approving, because this is the kind of journey she would insist lovers take at least once in their lifetime.
Stepping onto the Orient Express is like entering a
different century. Everything gleams: lacquered wood, polished brass, crystal sconces, velvet upholstery in jewel tones that belong in old films. Your steward welcomes you to your cabin, a jewel box of light and silk. A bottle of champagne waits in an ice bucket, cold and beaded with mist. The train exhales. A soft jolt. Movement.
In the dining car, white linen glows beneath the sconces, and every table feels like it was set for a celebration. Dinner might be lobster bisque spritzed with Cognac or truffledusted pasta folded lovingly by chefs trained in Parisian kitchens. The sommelier pours a chilled Chablis. The sparkle of the crystal catches the gold in your wedding bands.
After dinner, the bar car becomes its own world. A small band begins to play something jazzy and molten. Couples sway lazily. Others simply sit close, letting the hum of conversation, the gentle clink of ice, and the rolling tempo of the train become the soundtrack of the future they are beginning together. Outside the windows, the French countryside slips past in a soft blur, villages glowing like lanterns.
By morning, the Alps rise around you, quiet and majestic. You sip espresso in bed as snowdusted peaks drift by your window, feeling as though the world has slowed to honor this moment in your story. Then Italy appears. Terracotta rooftops. Waves of vineyards. Sunlight that feels warmer, more golden, as if hinting at the coast waiting just ahead. Even the train seems to sway differently now, with a kind of Mediterranean ease.
the horizon as though floating above the Mediterranean itself. The light changes throughout the day—morning mist, afternoon gold, evening rose—and every shade seems designed to reflect back the feeling of being newly married. You linger by that infinity pool, the coast shimmering below you, feeling as though the entire world has paused to give you room to breathe in the beauty.
A honeymoon like this becomes a trip with chapters, each one lovelier than the last. Paris. The Orient Express. Ravello. City. Journey. Coast. Anticipation. Bliss. Reverie.
Eventually you arrive in Naples, where a driver winds you gently along the coast until the cliffs of the Amalfi open up like the pages of a beloved novel. Perhaps you stop first in Positano, where blush-colored houses spill toward the sea. But the final chapter of this honeymoon, the one that leaves its mark, unfolds in Ravello.
High above the coastline, Ravello feels suspended between sky and sea. Your hotel pool stretches out into
We often rush through travel, treating the in-between moments as inconveniences. But on a honeymoon, especially one like this, the journey becomes the moment. The slow unfolding. The liminal space between who you were and who you are becoming. And while this is the wedding issue, here is a secret: honeymoon travel is not only for newlyweds. We all deserve a rekindling escape—a second honeymoon, a just-because honeymoon, a reminder of how it feels to step out of real life and into romance. Sometimes the most meaningful trips happen long after the wedding photos fade, when you know each other more deeply and can savor the experience with a softness that only time brings. When I plan travel for clients, honeymoons or otherwise, my goal is always the same: to weave intention, curiosity, and a sense of magic. Travel should never feel like checking boxes on an itinerary. It should feel like walking through a doorway into the next part of your life. So, as you flip through this issue, dreaming of dresses, flowers, and first dances, I hope you’ll dream just as boldly about the moments that come after. The champagne on the train. The sunrise over a vineyard. The whisper of a foreign city waking up around you. The feeling of being suspended in a bubble of time with the person you love.
Your honeymoon is not just a vacation. It’s the prologue to the rest of your story. Make it unforgettable.
Honeymoon Dreaming
A guide to crafting a love story you’ll never forget
The best honeymoons aren’t defined by how much you spend. They’re defined by how deeply you feel the experience. Whether you’re planning something intimate and close to home or ready to board a plane to somewhere extraordinary, intention is what transforms travel into memory.
FOR THE ROMANTIC MINIMALIST
When life is busy, sometimes the most luxurious thing you can choose is togetherness. Think charming boutique hotels, mountain cabins wrapped in quiet, or a beautifully curated coastal town where mornings stretch slowly and nothing is rushed. A thoughtfully chosen splurge—a private dinner, a sunset sail, a massage for two—becomes the moment you’ll talk about for years.

away by morning. This is for the two of you who want to feel alive, curious, and beautifully connected to the world—and each other.
FOR THE “THIS IS OUR MOMENT” JOURNEY
When you’re ready to lean into cinematic, heartstopping beauty, the world opens. Clifftop towns in Italy. Sun-soaked Greek islands. Lantern-lit dinners in Japan. Safaris at sunrise followed by wine under the stars. Luxury here feels soulful, purposeful, deeply remembered.
FOR THE DREAMERS, THE LEGENDS, THE ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME LOVERS
Some places imprint themselves onto your heart forever. Overwater bungalows in impossibly blue lagoons. The quiet hum of the African savannah at dusk. Destinations so breathtaking they invite you to exhale and step fully into this new chapter together.
8 p3: Beyond the Beach- Honeymoon
FOR THE EFFORTLESS ESCAPE COUPLE
If you want relaxation without logistics, consider destinations where beauty, service, and experience come seamlessly together. Think turquoise waters, warm hospitality, and days that unfold gently and graciously. This is romance wrapped in ease.
FOR THE ADVENTURE-MEETSROMANCE TRAVELER
Some couples crave a story. Rainforest and beach in the same trip. Tucked-away vineyards. Hot springs beneath open sky. Cities that sparkle at night and landscapes that take your breath

The Skinny Louisiana New Year Reset
Drink More, Fiber Up, & Protein Always (Yes, You Can Still Have King Cake)
Every January, I see the same thing happen- people go all-in on extreme plans, cut out entire food groups, and swear off anything fun… only to burn out by February.
At Skinny Louisiana, we do things differently. We focus on simple habits that work with your lifestyle, your culture, and your kitchen, because healthy living should complement your lifestyle, not complicate it!
BY SHELLY MARIE REDMOND, RD, LDN
Page 43
If you want real results this year, these three foundational habits are where it all begins.
Article 9 p1: Nutrition in the New Year (Shelly Redman)
1) DRINK UP! WATER IS A WEIGHT-LOSS TOOL.
Before worrying about carbs, calories, or powders, let’s talk about water.
Daily goal: 72–100 ounces per day
At meals: 2 cups (16 ounces) before or with each meal
When waking: Hot lemon water
Drinking water with meals isn’t just a “good habit” — it’s backed by science. A study published in the journal
Obesity found that adults who drank water before meals consumed fewer calories and lost more weight than those who didn’t. Simply put, hydration helps your hunger hormones calm down so you can actually hear your body’s fullness signals.
Hot Lemon Water? This is my favorite way to start the day — before scrolling or chaos. How to make it:
• 12–16 ounces hot (not boiling) water
• Juice from ½ a fresh lemon or a True Lemon packet
Why it works:
• Gently wakes up digestion
• Supports regularity
• Gets hydration started early Is water too boring for you? You CAN add items to your water that don’t contain icky sweeteners or sugar replacers. My favorites (which you can find at our local grocery stores) include Ultima electrolytes (sweetened with stevia) and True Lemon or True Lime packets.
2) FIBER IS THE FOUNDATION.
If there’s one thing I’m known for, it’s talking about fiber, my favorite ‘F’ word!
Fiber goal:30–35 grams daily
Fiber helps:
• Control blood sugar
• Reduce cravings
• Improve gut health
• Keep you full longer
• Support consistent weight loss
Don’t panic — fiber isn’t that bland ol’ cereal your Maw Maw kept hidden in the back of the cabinet or sad plain ol’ veggie sticks. Today’s fiber-rich foods are flavorful, satisfying, and downright delicious. I’ve found options that keep you full and happy, which is exactly how healthy eating should feel.
For cold-breakfast lovers:
• ½–¾ cup Fiber One, Catalina Crunch, or Julian’s Bakery cereal
• Paired with high-protein yogurt like Ratio or Chobani Zero Sugar
• Ideal ratio: ½ cup cereal + ¾ cup yogurt + 1 tbsp chia seeds or 10 almonds
Not into cold breakfast?
• Sola bagels with eggs or turkey sausage! (PS - Sola Bagels have over 25 grams of fiber! That’s a strong start to any day.
Lunch That Loves You Back
• Mission Carb Balance wraps or Sola bread
Page 44
• Lean protein + vegetables (vegetables are between 4-5 grams of fiber per cup)
3) INCLUDE PROTEIN EVERY TIME YOU EAT.
Protein isn’t just for athletes — it’s essential for metabolism, muscle maintenance, and appetite control. We want to make sure that we are eating protein every time we eat!
Daily protein goal: 90 grams or more
Protein helps:
• Preserve lean muscle
• Stabilize blood sugar
• Keeps you satisfied between meals
Many people think of chicken, beef, or fish first — but don’t worry, it does not have to be meat. Yogurt, cottage cheese, eggs, and even beans can get the job done deliciously.
Easy Dinners for Busy Evenings
• Slow cooker chicken, pork, or beef (check out my recipe in Skinny Louisiana…in the Slow Cooker)
• Pair with vegetables and Parish Rice, a lowglycemic Louisiana favorite
• Add ½ cup berries at night for something sweet without the spike
Article 9 p1: Nutrition in the New Year (Shelly Redman) In Progress
• Add 1 cup raspberries if you want fruit (raspberries are the highest-fiber fruit, packing about 8 grams per cup)
Smart Snacks
• KIND bars (gluten-free and fiber-forward)7 grams of fiber
• IQ Bars - 9 grams of fiber
• Yogurt with berries - 8 grams of fiber
• Protein shakes with a fiber add-in (use Benefiber)
Supper, Simplified
• 4–6 ounces of meat
• 1 cup Non-starchy vegetables
» Try roasted artichokes, one of the highest-fiber vegetables available (Recipe available in my cookbook, Skinny Louisiana…In the Kitchen!)
What Happens When You Follow This for 14 Days?
When people consistently hit:
• 35+ grams of fiber
• 35 grams net carbs or less
• 90+ grams protein
• 1,500 calories or less
It’s common to see 4–10 pounds lost in just two weeks — without extreme dieting or cutting out joy. And yes, this plan still leaves room for my Skinny King Cake bars during Mardi Gras, because balance always wins.

The Festie Besties Celebrate the 2nd Annual
King Cake Crawl
WRITTEN BY LOLA MAGAZINE WITH THE FESTIE BESTIES
PHOTOGRAPHY BY PAIGE MELTON
The Sweetest Adventure Returns!
The Mardi Gras season is upon us, and The Festie Besties are once again gearing up for their annual King Cake Crawl—a delightful tasting event that promises to be even sweeter in its second season. On Saturday, January 31, participants will embark on an unforgettable journey, savoring the best King Cake offerings in Shreveport and Bossier City while bringing together food lovers, friends, and festive spirits alike.
Who Are the Festie Besties?
And Why a King Cake Crawl?
We’re glad you asked! Best friends Emerie Eck Holtzclaw and Jana Freeman Forrest founded The Festie Besties out of a desire to curate fun and engaging events for their community. After a year of planning and brainstorming, the King Cake Crawl was born. The event features all things Mardi Gras—local bakeries, festive flair, and plenty of fun. And who doesn’t love King Cake?
Within hours of launching the inaugural event, every ticket sold
out, creating immediate demand for a second round. As you can imagine, it sold out just as quickly—thrilling and exciting Emerie and Jana. The duo and their krewe were ready to roll!
The King Cake Crawl brought together enthusiastic crowds eager to indulge in the rich tradition of the sweet and sometimes savory confection. The crawl began at Andress Artist & Entrepreneur Center, The Festie Besties’ headquarters, where guests enjoyed King Cake coffee and cookies from
Rhino Coffee, a Sandy + Rizzo glitter bar, and fun photo ops. Participants then boarded a guided trolley tour, sampling a variety of delectable King Cakes from local bakeries.
And if you thought the trolley was simply a means of transportation, you don’t know these queens. Between stops, participants competed for Mardi Gras goodies during Trolley Trivia and enjoyed a festive atmosphere filled with laughter and camaraderie. After hours of sampling food, sipping drinks, and reveling in Mardi Gras culture, guests’ hearts—and bellies—were full.
“The inaugural event was a resounding success! We’re excited to bring it back- bigger and better for year two.” – Jana Freeman Forrest
This year’s crawl promises an enhanced experience, building on the foundation set in year one.

Mother of Your Sister Friend
Sometimes we think we should have all the answers. Truthfully, we don’t.
Oh, how I wish we did. Maybe it’s better that we don’t.
I had the extraordinary privilege of planning my daughter’s wedding—one of the most joyful and challenging experiences of my life. Blending her childhood dreams with her grown-woman vision felt like stepping into a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. And let’s be honest: wedding planning—the logistics, budgeting, and emotional weight—can be unnerving.
So, to every Mother of the Bride or Groom wondering if your child’s day is special enough, let me answer that for you. If you spent time with your child—if you thought about, prayed over, or planned their day—the answer is yes. No matter the mishaps, hiccups, or torrential rainstorm the weatherman failed to forecast, showing up and investing your heart and time into their celebration is enough.
And then—after the bouquet is tossed and life moves forward—what if?
Even in a bridal issue filled with beauty and hope, there are quiet realities we don’t always talk about. Realities that linger long after the dress is hung, the tux returned, and the flowers fade. It struck me while finalizing this issue of Lola, watching my daughter navigate what has become a familiar process of planning, directing, and editing.
What could diminish the beauty of a perfect
wedding day? Not the day itself, but the loss that may come later. Telling stories of perfect moments can sometimes unearth painful chapters that follow.
There is a particular ache in watching a marriage end—an even deeper ache in watching your beautiful girl gather pieces of herself from dreams she once believed would last forever- the love, the home, the family. I hate that for her. I hate it for me, too. I want her life to be filled with dreams come true, but some dreams simply unfold differently than we hoped.
So, what do you do? I paused. I prayed. And then I wrote this letter, hoping to give her one less thing to execute while processing old grief. Prayer, I’ve learned, is the real work. Perhaps our prayers for our children— and their prayers for themselves—are what God uses to bring beauty from ashes.
Scripture reminds us that God is the One “to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes” (Isaiah 61:3), and that while we plan our course, the Lord establishes our steps (Proverbs 16:9).
So, sisters, friends, mamas—be encouraged. Pray for your children. Pray with open hands and a trusting heart, and rest in this truth- the Father knows what you and your children need before you ask (Matthew 6:8).
-Your Sister Friend’s Mama, Ellyn
