Drama

Pre-Prep Drama
Taking part in what could be considered their first performance and presented at the end of the Michaelmas term, Nursery, together with all the Pre-Prep pupils are given the opportunity to re-tell a Christmas-themed story. Children in Years 1 and 2 also participate in the annual Pre-Prep Review and ‘Speak Out!’ Festival in March, reciting short poems with the help of a variety of costumes and props.
Pre-Prep pupils enjoy watching lots of exciting performances from companies such as the Hobgoblin Theatre.

Prep Drama
In their timetabled Drama lessons pupils are introduced to a variety of topics and drama genres. In Year 3, children study Roald Dahl’s classic tale of ‘The Twits’. Year 4 pupils learn and recite classic and contemporary poetry from memory, which helps them to present excerpts from Shakespeare’s play, The Tempest in Year 5. Year 6 pupils research and present short role-plays and biographies.
Embracing the opportunity to perform to a live audience, the weekly Drama Club gives children a chance to take part in the annual pantomime. A Drama Scholarship Club also gives pupils an opportunity to pursue their passion for drama and explore topics in more depth. They are then given support when applying to their chosen senior schools.
Speak Out
Our annual public-speaking competition, ‘Speak Out!’ runs in March, (usually coinciding with World Book Day) and involves pupils in Years 3-6. Pupils demonstrate their performance skills in lessons and finalists are selected from each class to perform to the school. ‘Speak Out’ involves both presenting and performing with children enjoying everything from storytelling and reciting poetry from memory to performing excerpts from a Shakespeare play. Winners and runners-up are chosen by a panel of three guest judges.

Music and Drama Extravaganza
Another highlight is the Year 4 Extravaganza, where the Music and Drama departments join forces to perform everything from songs to poetry.

Productions and Workshops
During the academic year, all pupils have the opportunity to watch a professional theatre production, be it in the West End or an external company who visit the school. In addition, pupils take part in workshops tailor-made for their year group provided by professional practitioners such as The Young Shakespeare Company, Guildford Shakespeare Company and the Freshwater Theatre Company.

Year 6 Drama Production
Performed in July at the end of the Trinity term, it is the Year 6 pupils’ last performance opportunity before they move on to senior school –such a wonderful way to make lasting memories of their time at RGS Prep.
The Drama department has a fantastic wardrobe of costumes, make up and props, and the set designs are always the talk of the school.
