saria u n a intervención quirúrgica.

Some aspects in the use of corpus linguistics as a tool of the XXI century in preservation and revitalization of indigenous languages

e live in a globalized world. Nowadays we are permanently surrounded by technology and all its implications. It is sure that technological development has brought a lot of advantages to our lives, such as in the field of communication, health, economics, knowledge, etc. Nevertheless, this process has also brought some disadvantages in some fields. One of the most endangered is language, especially the indigenous ones. In the next few years, almost 90% of the current world languages will vanish forever. This rate is growing so fast and is reaching an alarming speed (Abrams & Strogatz, 2003), this means that by the year 2050 the world will have an estimate of 300 alive languages of the 6000 that we already have (Farfán, 2011). Taking this into account lead us to search for an answer to resolve this tendency. Some may think that the process of language dead is something natural that is part of the history of the human being, but as Reyhner (1999) said: “language and culture are intimately entwined and cannot be separated”. So to lose a language involves to lose one culture and indigenous people need to retain their cultural strength face to a globalized world and to fight the individualization, and the little interest for the indigenous communities. The points of view about language death and extinction vary a lot, Krauss (1992) claims that language endangerment is even comparable to the endangerment of biological species in the natural world. And language disappearance is as severe as the loss of natural resources, language reflects our history, if we leave languages die then we die with them. The problem of language death is globalized, we share it with the rest of the world and Mexico as a multilinguistic and multicultural country has the same problems. Mexico counts with a population of 120 million persons, approximately 18 million of them are part of an indigenous minority and they still speak their mother tongue (Farfán, 2011). The linguistic landscape of Mexico includes several linguistic families between which we find the Uto-Aztecan, the Mayan and the Otomanguean (Vela, 2019). Within the Uto-Aztecan family, we can find an enormous amount of different languages with their respective dialects. One of the most

well-known is Nahuatl which is the most spoken indigenous language in Mexico. According to INEGI (Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía), (2010) in our country, there are 1,544,968 persons who speak Nahuatl and who live in the Mexican states of Jalisco, Nayarit, Veracruz, Oaxaca, among others. If the numbers are compared it is easily seen that Nahuatl is slowly dying, even if it is the most spoken indigenous language. It could be because of various reasons, maybe there are other languages which have more uses in daily life. Globalization and the reach of technology are two concepts that are contributing to the fading of thousands of languages in the world. Despite the role that has technology in language, death it also has many implications for heritage language maintenance and learning. In particular, authentic language usage can be easily recorded and preserved (Villa, 2002). Internet and the development of computer science have brought a lot of tools which can be used for revitalization of languages. One of the most important and less used of those tools is Corpus Linguistics which is a huge collection of text in electronic form from spoken and written sources, and that is designed to notice variations and similarities in the language (Kennedy, 2003). This paper presents a new approach to the usage of Corpora for the preservation of indigenous languages in Mexico, giving out new ways that researches in the field of linguistics have found in the last years for revitalizing or learning languages. Some linguists who are specialized in the field of applied linguistics and in the field of research about corpus linguistics say that there are two principal approaches of corpora in teaching and learning languages. That is the vision of Bernardini (2002) who claims that those two approaches are the direct one and the indirect one. For the purposes of this essay, we will take into account the direct approach. The direct approach in corpus linguistics is more focused on teachers and learners. It does not take into account the researcher, who is only a provider of corpus-based materials. This approach tries to explain how teachers and learners of languages can take corpora into their own hand for academical and personal purposes learning in an autonomous way (Bernardini, 2002). Corpus linguistics has a wide range of pedagogical activities that could be used inside a classroom by teachers of second languages. Between these activities, we can find material design, syllabus design, language testing, methodology development, the study of collocations, phraseology, etc. (Granger, 2003). Such activities are an optimum way for languages revitalization such as Na10 Nemea
huatl because they solve one of the biggest problems that an individual may have when learning indigenous languages with the intention of maintaining them alive. This problem is the lack of authentic materials for instructional purposes (Villa, 2002). Villa (2002) defines authentic materials as “original texts, films, and recordings of language usage, among other media, that accurately reflect how a language community employs its heritage tongue, materials that have not been specifically created for an instructional purpose”. Having access to authentic material can have a vital impact in the motivation of the learner of indigenous languages because he or she will notice how the language is developed within a linguistic community and is used in real life situations. Using authentic material may seem simple but it is much more difficult than that because of the next reasons. The first one is that sometimes it will be difficult to find authentic samples of languages which are stored in a digital way. Compiling Corpus is a hard work which has to be done by professionals in the field of languages studies. In Mexico we only count with one Corpus, this electronic tool has been developed by the department of linguistic engineer of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). The Axolotl corpus, which is the name of the project, is a parallel corpus that contains samples in both Spanish and Nahuatl languages, and that gives the user the opportunity to look how the language works (Gutierrez-Vasques, 2016). Another problem is that even if we have corpus linguistics the potential to help improve language pedagogy, researchers in language field do not always make sufficient efforts to reach practitioners with what could be called the corpus mission and to find out about what teachers actually need and want (Römer, 2011). This means that even if we have the materials and corpora, researchers do not show educators how to use it, or simply they do not offer what they want. So it is necessary to be aware of the needs of learners and contexts in which we can use corpus linguistics. Finally, another problem that may come out when talking about the use of corpus linguistics in teaching and preservation of languages is that the use and implementation of recording and digital storage technologies require individuals who are capable of dealing with the necessary hardware, software, and key components of these electronic innovations, and who are sensitive to the language needs they confront (Villa, 2002). Apart from that, we must take into account the economic situation and social context in which a certain program
Some aspects in the use of corpus linguistics as a tool of the XXI century in preservation and revitalization of indigenous languages
may be applied. We will not have the same results in one place where there is no access to the internet. If we want to develop a good strategy for language preservation we have to deal with this sort of problems but the lack of awareness of corpora and in some cases, resistance to corpora from teachers, students, and material developers (Römer, 2005) has left outside the classroom the correct use of this medium of learning. I think that in most of the cases even the existence of such a tool like corpus linguistics is unknown for most of the educators and students. So we have to start by that. It is necessary to teach teachers how to use twenty-first-century devices. If teachers do not know how to use corpora how can we expect our students to be interested in learning about indigenous languages? The study of applications of Corpora is a fundamental issue for future research, the field is huge and we as linguists must be aware of all the implications that our work has in the future of our life and our country. This work was carried out with the intention of showing the critical condition of the indigenous languages in Mexico and how can we find a solution to it using virtual tools such as corpus linguistics. It is necessary for our work as linguists and language teachers because the development of these platforms, which contain real-life samples of language, has to be done by us. We can train people to do it, but it is not an easy job. Language is part of what we were, we are and we will be, so as we saw at the beginning of this paper it is necessary to fight against the huge influence of globalization and to use the new researches on technology for making a good way of preserving national languages.

“The applied linguistics in the political discourses” Atena Hernández Vázquez
Speech is a terrain, a dynamic linguistic and, above all, semantic space in which social meanings are produced or challenged (Seidel, 1985, p. 44)
A
s it is known language is not only a biological property of human beings but also is a social feature through which humans transmit their thoughts and communicate. Thereby, from the view of applied linguistics, it can be noticed some political discourses shared notable issues, such as the different meanings and functions a single word can have according to its context or the possible hidden meanings they can contain. In order to understand how the political discourse is constructed, within applied linguistics, it is worth to consider both corpus and critical linguistics, and so the poststructuralism to point out some of these complications. The main objective of this essay is to analyze how political discourses function through some authors, to name a few, Susan Huston; Randi Reppen; and Norbert Schmitt. In the wide field of study and analysis of linguistics, there is applied linguistics that solves problems through language knowledge and use. «Applied linguistics is using what [is known] about (a) language, (b) how it is learned and (c) how it is used, in order to achieve some purpose or solve [a] problem in the real world» (Schmitt, 2009, p. 1). Thus, to solve any language problem it involves knowing how language works and to know how to use it correctly. Additionally, the concept of Hymens (1972), «commu12 Nemea
nicative competence» comes to look at, «which emphasized that language competence consists more than just being able to form grammatically correct sentences but also to know when and where to use these sentences and to whom» (Platt & Heidi, 1985, p. 49). That is, within the communicative process, the way a language is or should be produced allows humans to establish communication between them and making differences from one speech to another. It is needful to bring up the corpus linguistics into consideration as an essential tool to become aware of how the political patterns are presented. A «corpus linguistics uses large collections of both spoken and written natural texts (corpora or corpuses, singular corpus) that are stored on computers» (Schmitt, 2009, p. 89). The use of corpus linguistics has brought plenty contributions, one of the most recognized is the area of analysis of patterns of language use and natural language to demonstrate the variation of language in a specific situation either spoken, written, informal or formal. «Corpus studies have also led to an increased interest in analyses of ‘discourse grammar’, that is, analyses of the functional roles of grammatical structures in discourse» (Schmitt, 2009, p. 23). In this sense, corpus or corpora help the analysis of discourse because it is easy to recognize the different, either grammar or idiomatic, words that are
The applied linguistics in the political discourses
frequently used in political discourses. Subsequently, the grammatical choices politicians do «depend on how they construe and wish to represent the context and on how they wish to position themselves in it» (Schmitt, 2009, p. 23). Thus, it is possible to have a foresight of the topic established just with the first sentence. For instance, in the first line of George Bush’s discourse in 2007, he started as follows: «Good morning. For too long, the people of Darfur have suffered at the hands of a government...» (Bush, 2007), therefore it can be said and deduced, thanks to the specific words «people of Darfur», «suffered» and «government» that the main topic is related to the currently situation in Sudan and its « genocide system». Consequently, it shows, as mentioned lines above, that some information is foreseen from concrete words within the speech and, thence that valuable input can be obtained and allied to the principal subject. In this way, the analysis of political speech entails the use of frequency words list, phraseology, and collocations. The frequency words list is used in corpora to study and identify differences between them, for example, «grammar words are more frequent than lexical words […] The lexical words in […] corpora reflect their subject of matter, e.g. surface (34), energy (37), electron (48), and particles (50) in materials science, and international (21), policy (28), states (29) and socialization (50) in politics» (Hunston, 2002, p. 3). Therefore, it is shown that there are more words in material science than in politics, as a result of the density of prose in material science is higher due to the lexical words occur without grammar words (the, of, and, a, and in) interfering. Thus, the differences between these two corpora of contrary motifs are displayed by the frequency lists. Thence, scientific discourse focuses the most on using the correct and assertive words to convince since its main objective and precise, unlike the material political speech, is trying to persuade the audience of believing what is being said, therefore, the political discourse is usually more redundant and confusing due to the number of grammar words that are within it. Phraseology, it allows to identify the tendency of use of words or phrases, «allowing the user to observe regularities in use that tend to remain unobserved when the same words or phrases are met in their normal context» (Hunston, 2002, p. 9). For instance, in both speeches given by Mutasim Ali in 2013 and George Bush in 2007, phrases such as «the people of […] », «the sate of […]», «the region of […]», seem to appear repeatedly. Collocation is the tendency of certain words to co-oc-
cur. «It comprises two or more words which are not necessarily felt to be idiomatic and which co-occur more often than chance would predict for no obvious reason other than habit» (Milizia, 2019, p. 128). In political speeches this can be seen in collocates such as «human right», «militia forces», «international relations», «financial system», «peace agreement» among others. Notably, the collocations vary from language to language, so it would not be the same use of certain words to form a collocation in English as Spanish. Furthermore, sociolinguistics studies the social agents and language use, «it was acknowledged that the context in which language is used (for example, for what purpose, the relative power relationship between interlocutors) also affects the language communication» (Schmitt, 2009, p. 8). Since, context and cultural ideology in which a language is being produced are vital to becoming acquainted of how, when and to whom is accurate to use certain sequences of sentences. On the other hand, it is critical linguistics that conceives language as «something that ‘intervenes’ in the social word, largely by perpetuating the assumptions and values of [the] world» (Hunston, 2002, p. 109). One of its aims is to study texts within the context of the social circumstances in which they are produced; the options variegated appear in the ways in which individual words are used. Thence, it is the poststructuralism, as a political and literary philosophy has brought «philosophical ideas and concepts to the study of world politics. [It] holds that language is social because [humans] cannot make [their] thoughts understandable to others without a set of shared codes» (Hansen, 2014, pp. 169-170). In this sense, poststructuralism is involved in the language context; in politics, language is pivotal because politicians «must legitimate their foreign policies to the audience at home and abroad» (Hansen, 2014, p. 170). Thus, it holds that to make sense of the world, language is essential. As it has been mentioned, due to the environment, the period of time and audience to whom the speech is addressed, the grammatical words; the sequence of sentences; and word choices that a politician does, are the constituent parts of the discourse, that is, they built up its body because of the context in which the discourse is been produced. For instance, «if what happens in Darfur, Sudan is described as ‘a genocide’, there is a strong moral pressure on the international community to ‘do something’, but not if what happens is described as ‘tribal warfare’» (Hansen, 2014, p. 170). Hence, it evinces that the word handling is important since it can change Nemea 13
The applied linguistics in the political discourses
the whole sense of what is intended to state. Seidel, G. (1985). Political discourse analysis. London: It also can be seen in the speech given by the President academic Press. George Bush, in 2002. He announced the existences of an «‘axis of evil’ threatening the Western world, this implied a radical difference between the USA and the countries (Iraq, Iran, and North Kore) that were part of the axis» (Hansen, 2014, p. 171). Therefore, as it can be seen from these examples, language is understood by poststructuralism beyond a neutral transmitter but as a meaning producer; as well, it means that the words chosen to describe something are non-neutral, and the use of a term above another has political implications. Taking everything into consideration, it can be concluded that political discourses are mainly concerned with international relations due to the specific and significant use of words in politicians’ speeches. It also shows that knowing the context in which a discourse is being developed affect the understanding of itself. Just as applied linguistics analyzes the construction of texts (in this case political discourse) through corpus, frequency, phraseology and collocations, as too critical linguistics do, through the review of the context in which the discourse is produced. Thus, poststructuralism appears as a back-up for the point of view of critical linguistics due to language is a meaning producer that can be assigned to a specific event, and it also stresses that language, within a discourse, sees structures as unstable because connections between words are never given once and for all. all (2011), noted that “applied linguistics is a discipline concerned with the role language and languages play in perceived problems of communication, social entity, education, health, economics, politics and justice, and in the development of ways to remediate or resolve these problems ”(p. 15). Applied linguistics is focused on the needs of the clients, which in this case are the health personnel, specifically nursing. The program of the academic unit of nursing, aims to train professionals who develop in the international area; nursing is responsible for developing care plans according a book named: NANDA (from the North American Association of Nursing Diagnoses); this book contains a standardized language and its application is international. The pragmatism of applied linguistics in nursing is focused on the analysis of the corpus of care plans with the aim of discovering the patterns of this standardized language in order to create didactic perspectives that can be useful in the teaching-learning of English. Also its pragmatism lies in the fact of the need to establish effective communication between the health professional and the patients; for this, the perspective of the nurse as a translator and the variables of language use are exposed; sociocultural theory and the Reading method are proposed as tools which can make possible to not only reduce linguistic barriers, but also cultural barriers between nursing personnel and their patients. According to the Mission of the academic program of nursing (2020), it is intended "Training nursing graduates nursing professionals according to the demands of health at the local, regional, national and international levels ...." (p. 54) This refers to the fact that a training in the English language is promoted within the curriculum plan; unfortunately, it is not until the last semester (eighth), that the subject is taught with vocabulary according to the jargon required for the field of study; during the remaining semesters, which are the majority of the curriculum, the subject is taught with vocabulary according to daily life, that is, slang. Health personnel have difficulties in their attendance due to language barriers; according to Carvajal (2018), "these are associated with an increase in: medical complications, lack of adherence to treatment, lack of understanding of the diagnosis, misunderstandings, systematic errors." (p.11) Thanks to this, it can be said that the nurse must understand the diagnosis well, especially the nursing diagnosis contained in NANDA. NANDA contains standardized languages that are used

internationally. According to Roy (2007) it is useful to “identify words and grammar that will need further exploration in our continuing effort to give input to a global vision of nursing knowledge.” (p.89) In accordance with the above, it can be affirmed that the analysis of a corpus taken from the nursing care plans is relevant. In agreement with Fortaleza (2003), the analysis of a linguistic corpus of 63 model plans in English can make it possible to “discover the linguistic-communicative potential of care plans in the English language and analyze the didactic study perspectives for the teaching-learning of foreign languages.” (p.1). Thus, the current patterns of the standardized language of NANDA can be explored to give it pragmatic use in university classrooms. In the diagnostic stage of NANDA book, the sentences are made up of two nuclei linked by the related to passive participle. For example, impaired physical mobility related to sensory loss. There is a causal relationship between both nuclei; Nuclei 1 is the effect of Nuclei 2 or related factor, as can be seen in the following examples: Pain related to meningeal irritation, Postoperative pain related to surgical incision. This means that if we take RELATED as a node Word in concordance lines, we will find that it is followed by the preposition TO and then the related factor to the right side; to the left, the node Word is typically used with nouns indicating the health problem. According to Huston (2007), “tagging means allocating a part of speech (POS) label to each word in a corpus” (p.80) Nursing diagnoses are generally constructed from a noun phrase (NP) made up of a single noun (N) or a noun and several adjectives (A) or other nouns that act as modifiers. For example, Ineffective airway clearance NP = A + N + N. Another nursing diagnosis contains a preposition. For example, High risk for infection, that is, NP = FS (A + N) + P + N. With the evidence presented previously, it can be affirmed that there is a predominance of a group of patterns that go from the Nemea 15
Applied Linguistics in nursing
phrases that constitute information nuclei when formulating the diagnosis with well-defined institutional norms from NANDA (of the North American Association of Nursing Diagnostics). In consonance with Huston (2007), the transitive START is frequent in academic prose because it is used in sentences that indicate the beginning of a process, for example, Blood loss began around the eighth day after infection… ” (p.85) similarly, the care plans reflect the tendency to resort to the transitivity of verbs in clauses that involve participation in the process, for example, Assure patient and significant others of close continuous monitoring that will ensure prompt interventions. In agreement with Pirandelo (1939), reading is a translation because "we relate to others those ideas and those impressions received by reading" (p. 242) Following the same logic, it can be said that the nurse is a translator, since he is in charge of explaining to patients the health problem that he suffers using words that may be understandable, putting aside certain technicalities. For example, if a patient is told he has hyperglycemia, and the patient has limited vocabulary, they may not fully understand the condition; however, if you are told you have high blood sugar, you will probably better understand the health problem. According to Huston (2007), in the section called semantic annotation, it is possible to calculate the most frequent meanings made by health personnel by analyzing the interaction between them and their patients. (p. 89). It is stated that, if someone spent more time explaining to patients and use far more discourse particles, firsthand and second person pronouns and in a down tone, he or she will be perceived as more supportive, interactive and friendly; but, a person who spent more time using technical terms and spend more time talking about disease rather than treatment, is less supportive. Analyzing the above, it can be affirmed that there is the presence of a variation in the use of the speaker, since their linguistic resources depend on it; informal language is more concise, while formal language requires more elaboration. It is not intended to say that, for example, white is better than black, but that everything requires a proper balance on the gray scale. Similarly, the uses of language should be determined according to its context, since the use of informal language in a document that requires academic prose would not be appropriate. The nursing student must value the patient from the biological, psychological and social point of view; the16 Nemea
refore, it is necessary to analyze the patient's cultural values and beliefs in order not only to reduce linguistic but also cultural barriers. According to Schmitt (2010), the sociocultural theory “emphasizes individual-social integration by focusing in the necessary and dialectic relationship between the sociocultural endowment and the biological endowment… in order to understand the human mind, one must look at those endowments in an integrated manner” (p.8). During the interaction with society an exchange of ideas takes place; however, knowledge is acquired in an intrapersonal way when such information is assimilated. Imagine that one mirror is collocated in front of other mirror; with a certain degree of inclination, multiple mirrors can be seen within more mirrors. Sociocultural theory works the same because new knowledge is generated from previous knowledge already assimilated and stored in memory. A single mirror does nothing, it is necessary the use of two; likewise interaction with others is necessary to achieve the desired effect. Reading is culture; therefore, the Reading method is an adequate tool to guarantee the acquisition of vocabulary for the reader. According to Fortaleza (2009), “most foreign language lessons devote extensive treatment to grammar and pronunciation, while the vocabulary and culture of the language are often neglected” (p.1). This is one more reason to promote the acquisition of reading habits in the student who wishes to master a foreign language. As a conclusion, with the data analyzed, applied linguistics has been seen as a relevant tool for nursing and its relationship with the acquisition of a foreign language, English specifically. The patterns previously exposed in this work can be seen in the University classrooms from earlier semesters, in order to improve the learning of the English language focused on the area of study of the health professional. Special care must be taken in the use variation of language in order to establish effective communication between nurses and patients; the health professional is a social being who needs to read to add knowledge to his memory and thus lessen as well as possible the barriers not only linguistic but also cultural.

ith the category of university teachers or students comes the responsibility towards the society, if the knowledge received is not paid back to the community, the education is not being fulfilled. The language produced in the educational surrounding is rich in information. Teachers or even the students of applied linguistics, could take advantage of theirs skills and the multiple data near then, and use it to make changes, to correct mistakes, to improve education. After all, that is the purpose of Applied Linguistics, as Norbert Schmitt, in his book Applied linguistics, describes it: “Applied linguistics’ is using what we know about (a) language, (b) how it is learned, and (c) how it is used, in order to achieve some problem in the real world”. (Schmitt 2010: 1) Taking into account what was mentioned before, it was decided to make a simple analysis of data belonging to the Foreign Language major at the Autonomous University of Zacatecas. Although this University has existed since 1832, the career in Foreign Languages started only 9 years ago. The youth of the career is taken as an advantage. The ones in charge, the teachers, and the staff are working constantly to improve the quality of education given to students. Therefore, this work was made as-
suming its good reception, and as an encouragement to make deeper studies to help next generations. One of the main objectives of the Foreign Language major is to achieve English as a second language2 , the students should master the four language skills (speaking, reading, listening and writing) to receive their degree. This brief analysis focused only on the writing skill, but it is worth mentioning that all of the other three skills have much to offer for further studies. The writing skill involves a laborious process. For a second language student, to write correctly, first he or she need to know a good amount of words, how to use it properly, an idea of what is going to be said, a structure, and other little factors. That is why, this skill is one of the favourites for language investigators. It gives a great amount of information of the person, the way that the language is being assimilated, the problems that are facing, and naturally, it also gives information about the surroundings and the society in which he or she lives. The hypothesis from which we part is that there is a progress in the writing skills of a students within two semesters of writing a text in English weekly. This advance is going to be measured by the nouns, the largest word class3 . So, the next questions appeared: Is there a relationship between the quantity of nouns produced and the progress of learning a second language? What difference makes a year in the Foreign Language career
2 The students also have to study a third language (German, Italian or French). 3 https://dictionary.cambridge.org/es-LA/grammar/british-grammar/nouns_2 4 Susan Hunson in her book Applied Linguistics defines it as “A collection of texts produced by learners of a language.”

for the writing skills? Does the number of nouns in a text show the complexity that a writer can develop? The texts analysed could be seen as a small learner corpus4 , after all, all of the data comes from current students, consequently, as all kind of corpora, the corpus will not represent all kinds off language, but only a specific context. It must be remembered that it is an exposition of language out of context. From it can be obtained frequency of words, which must be interpreted according to the context. For the compilation of text for the corpus, two individuals of the fourth semester and two of the sixth semester, each one of them from a different group, were selected. These informants5 had in common that they were students in the Foreign Language Bachelor at the Autonomous University of Zacatecas, they were learning English as a Second Language, the four of them were females between 18 and 21 years old and none of them had other university studies before. Also, neither of them had lived in a English speaking country. T h e texts of the corpus needed to had topics in common to ensure the appearance of similar words for the further analysis, so it was decided that the source of the texts would be the Field Journal. The students of Foreign Languages of the Autonomous University of Zacatecas had to write a Field Journald from first semester to third semester in Spanish and from fourth semester to seventh semester in English to improve their writing abilities. This Journal is handled as an obligatory subject with a an assigned teacher who will correct the mistakes of the students and will give feedback. For this brief analysis, the first entry from the semester January - July was chosen, these four texts had a range of 153 to 385 words. To balance the quantity of words, it was decided to use just the first 150 words of each text. Then, from these 150 words, the nouns were selected and counted. And, finally, to get the percentage of nouns in each text, the rule of three was used.
As an example, the first informant, a 20 year old fourth semester female student wrote 161 words in total, for the analysis it is only taken the first 150 words. After counting the nouns, the total of nouns is 36. Next, rule of three is applied: 36 is multiplied by 100 and the result is divided by 150, giving us a total of 24%. If only the word form is counted, the total of nouns is 28, so the percentage is of 18.66%. This being explained, the data collected is the following: The four informants had in common two nouns: semester and class. And, between the fourth semester there were 8 nouns in common: week, semester, class, English, language, subject, score, and grade. While, between the sixth semester informants, there were only 4 nouns in common: class, German, semester and class. A reduction of the use of nouns can be clearly stated. The informants of fourth semester use more nouns in their texts, even if it’s a slightly difference (like the difference between Informant 2 and Informant 4). This reduction in the use of nouns could indicate that the students have a richer v o c a b u l a r y, that they are more careful with the repetition of words and maybe they are using more complex structures that contain more adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, etc. If all of the above criteria are accomplished it can be said that the Foreign Languages major is implementing a good educational programme for English as a second language. It would remain to investigate if the advance is still in the next semesters. Additionally, only as a suggestion, it is proposed to make a full corpus only with the Field Journal, this will give the teacher a tool to recognize the most common mistakes in the students, and to correct them.
“¿Qué estás haciendo?”: [keh-’thaIø-asien-do] o [ke-ø‘taia-sien-do]).

—A ver…
