" WHERE ARCHITECTURE BECOMES THE MOUNTAIN'S EMBRACE " In the dramatic, undulating landscapes of Baabdat, Lebanon, Akl Architect has conceived a masterpiece of organic design: the Black Ember – Lattouf Residence. This dwelling is envisioned as an architecture without boundaries, a structure that seamlessly flows with its natural gradient and artfully dissolves the threshold between the intimacy of the home and the grandeur of the horizon. Set against the majestic backdrop of Lebanon’s mountains, the residence doesn't just sit upon the land; it gently descends into it, rooting itself into place while gracefully unfolding towards the sweeping panorama that lies beyond.
11 The architectural philosophy behind Black Ember is deeply inspired by its context. The very diagonals of the surrounding ridges are mirrored in the strategic orientation of the home's walls and frameless openings. This ingenious design captures expansive southeast views, bathing the interiors in natural light, while simultaneously shielding the residence from neighboring sightlines, ensuring utmost privacy. Movement through the house is not merely functional; it is meticulously choreographed to unfold a sequence of breathtaking vistas. Steps and pathways thoughtfully connect indoor and outdoor zones, guiding the eye and the spirit toward the distant horizon, making the journey through the home as enriching as the destination itself. Upon entry, a central patio emerges as a transformative gateway, a serene interstitial space that fluidly links the exterior and interior through a sequence of thoughtfully designed zones. An exterior shell of engineered black stone grounds the dwelling firmly in its rugged, natural context, evoking the solidity and timelessness of the mountains themselves. In contrast, warm wooden interiors bring an essential sense of intimacy and comfort, creating welcoming living spaces. The interplay of stone, wood, glass, and steel creates a compelling balance of solidity and transparency, weight and lightness, giving the residence a dynamic yet grounded presence. The magnificent H+L HOUSE, a project born from intricate challenges and a highly detailed client vision, exemplifies their innovative prowess and commitment to elevating modern living. The H+L HOUSE serves as a testament to intelligent design navigating complexities, specifically addressing stringent setback restrictions and internal condominium regulations. The client's core desire was clear: to maximize the land and foster an intimate connection with nature, both within and outside the home. This vision was meticulously realized through the strategic incorporation of natural elements; soft stone and rich wood define the interiors, while lush landscaping is thoughtfully integrated, visible from numerous vantage points. The social area of the house was ingeniously designed for maximum transparency between the front and back of the lot, optimizing natural light and ventilation, while large openings create a fluid connection between internal and external spaces. The diverse material palette—concrete, stone, wood, steel, and glass—infuses the house with a lively, airy, and singularly special character. This two-story residence thoughtfully divides its functions, dedicating the ground floor to services and a large, integrated, and flexible social area, featuring expansive sliding doors that seamlessly connect to the garden and inviting pool. The upper floor offers private sanctuaries, comprising three exquisite suites, a comfortable guest room, and a convenient support kitchen, completing the home's comprehensive program. A standout achievement of this project is its exemplary commitment to sustainability; in addition to water reuse tanks, photovoltaic panels ingeniously cover the upper slab, rendering the house remarkably self-sufficient. The residence is further distinguished by rich carpentry and an exclusive design, from its exposed, mixed structure of concrete and steel that imbues it with uniqueness, to its bespoke furniture. The striking staircase, a main and sculptural element within the living room, powerfully reinforces the originality and bespoke nature of this entire, award-worthy project.
