Can you believe spring is almost here? 7:46 AM (PST) on Friday, March 20, to be exact. But the Spring Solstice isn’t just a date on the calendar. It’s an astronomical event. On the vernal equinox, the Sun crosses directly above Earth’s equator, meaning the Northern and Southern Hemispheres receive nearly equal amounts of sunlight.
In the United States, this seasonal shift also means setting our clocks forward one hour for Daylight Saving Time. By “springing forward” an hour at 2:00 AM on March 20, we make better use of the longer days ahead. Americans set their clocks forward so there are longer sunlight hours in the evening rather than in the morning. This change results in more daylight hours to reconnect with friends and family after work and school!
