HOW VALENTINE’S DAY IS CELEBRATED ACROSS THE GLOBE

Here in the US, we celebrate Valentine’s Day on February 14th by sharing gifts, flowers and candy with those we love. But did you know Valentine’s Day isn’t a uniquely American holiday? Many other countries celebrate Valentine’s Day with their own special traditions.
MEXICO: THE DAY OF LOVE AND FRIENDSHIP - FEB 14, 2026
Instead of Valentine’s Day, Mexico calls February 14th
El Día del Amor y Amistad, which translates to The Day of Love and Friendship. This holiday is celebrated much like Valentine’s Day in the US—with the sharing of gifts, cards and sweet treats—only they’re exchanged as much between friends as they are lovers.
BRAZIL: LOVERS’ DAY - JUN 12, 2026
Brazil is too focused on their epic Carnival celebration in February, so they don’t do Valentine’s Day on the 14th. Instead, they celebrate Dia dos Namorados AKA Lovers’ Day on June 12th, also known as Saint Anthony’s Eve. Couples celebrate Lovers’ Day the same way we celebrate Valentine’s Day—with gifts, fancy dinners and romantic gestures. It’s also said that Saint Anthony, the patron saint of marriage, will bless them with happiness and prosperity.
PHILIPPINES: VALENTINE’S DAY - FEB 14, 2026
Those afraid of commitment may want to avoid the Philippines on Valentine’s Day. A popular Filipino tradition is to celebrate with a kasalang bayan, a mass wedding often featuring hundreds of couples tying the knot all at once.
FINLAND: FRIENDSHIP DAY - FEB 14, 2026
In Finland, February 14th is called Ystävänpäivä (pronounced YOUS-ta-van-PIE-vah), which loosely translates to “Friendship Day.” Instead of showering their significant others with love and gifts, Fins show their dear friends how much they’re appreciated with small presents.
CZECH REPUBLIC: THE DAY OF LOVE - MAY 1, 2026
The Czech Republic has their own version of Valentine’s Day, just a bit later in the year. On May 1st, couples observe this holiday by visiting the cherry tree grove where the famous statue of Czech poet Karel Hynek Macha resides to kiss under the cherry trees, for good luck.
SPAIN: FEAST OF SAN DIONISIO/SANT DONIS - OCT 9, 2026
Spain celebrates Saint Valentine on February 14th, almost the same way we do in the US, with a focus on romance. But they also celebrate Saint Dionysius, the patron saint of love, on October 9th—a holiday known locally as Sant Donis. This Spanish holiday is celebrated across the region with parades, festivals, and sweet traditions like Mocadorada: the gifting of marzipan wrapped in silk handkerchiefs.
CHINA: QIXI FESTIVAL - AUG 19, 2026
Like Spain, China celebrates the Western Valentine’s Day on February 14th with flowers and gifts, but they also have their own equivalent holiday known as the Qixi Festival, or Qiqiao Festival, celebrating the romantic legend of two lovers in Chinese mythology. Taking place on the seventh day of the seventh month of the Chinese lunar calendar, this holiday is spent observing the stars and enjoying a deep-fried treat known as Qiao Guo, among other activities.
SOUTH KOREA: VALENTINE’S DAY, WHITE DAY, BLACK DAY - FEB 14, MAR 14, AND APR 14, 2026
Lovers are celebrated twice in South Korea, with women gifting flowers and chocolates on February 14th for Valentine’s Day, followed by the men returning the favor on March 14th, known as White Day. One month later, all the single people celebrate Black Day with a bowl of jajangmyeon, a traditional noodle dish doused in a sweet and savory black bean sauce.
JAPAN: VALENTINE’S DAY, WHITE DAY - FEB 14 AND MAR 14, 2026
Like in South Korea, Valentine’s Day in Japan is celebrated with women doing the gifting. They’ll pass out fancier “honmei-choco” AKA “true feelings/love chocolate” to those they have a crush on and “girichoco” AKA “obligatory chocolate” to friends, family and colleagues. The men then reciprocate one month later by giving out white chocolate and other gifts on White Day.
SOUTH AFRICA: VALENTINE’S DAY - FEB 14, 2026
South Africa observes Valentine’s Day the same way the US does, for the most part. One unique tradition they have is for single women to write the name of their crush on a paper heart and pin it to their sleeve. This is said to be a nod to the ancient Roman celebration of Lupercalia.
GERMANY: VALENTINE’S DAY - FEB 14, 2026
Germany also observes Valentine’s Day similarly to the US, but instead of heart-shaped gifts, couples will often give each other pigs as a symbol of love and gingerbread cookies.
ITALY: THE HOLIDAY FOR LOVERS - FEB 14, 2026
Italy’s version of Valentine’s Day is also celebrated on the 14th of February, but they call it La Festa Degli Innamorati, and it’s a holiday strictly dedicated to romantic lovers. Celebrations will last several days in the city of Verona, where Romeo & Juliet fell in love, with concerts and festive decor.

LUNAR NEW YEAR
FEBRUARY 17TH KICKS OFF A NEW YEAR IN THE LUNAR CALENDAR
The end of winter is celebrated on the first new moon of the season, which lands on February 17th this year, kicking off the Lunar New Year. According to the Chinese zodiac, 2026 is the year of the horse. More specifically, the year of the fire horse, which represents energy and momentum. The fire horse is said to embody traits like leadership and assertiveness, encouraging others to embrace challenges and set ambitious goals for the new year.
Lunar New Year is observed all over Asia as well as in Australia, the UK, Canada, the US and parts of Europe and Africa. Common traditions include sharing cash gifts in red envelopes as well as treats and fruit wrapped in red paper. Lunar New Year is one of our favorite times of year at Ultra Mobile.
