Commencement cancellations and postponements across the country have left many soon-to-be-grads and their families unable to celebrate like in previous years. But that’s no reason not to do something special for the grad in your life. Here are a few creative ways to honor their hard work and show you care.
Video Chat Parties
It might seem obvious to video call, but there are a few ways to make your video call special. Try wearing or ordering silly props or outfits to theme the party based on the graduate. If they want to be a scientist, ask everyone to wear white “lab coats”, glasses or make beverages that look like experiments to lighten the mood. Personalizing the theme to them will make them feel special and lighten the mood.
Record a Video Tribute
Cards are nice, but there’s nothing quite as special as a video message that lets them know how proud you are. Add some good advice or something you admire about them for extra points.

Gift Scavenger Hunt
If your graduate is at home with you, it’s not too late to take advantage of any gifts you might give. To make them work for it and have some fun, consider stashing away their gifts and letting them search for them. You can even share clues on a sheet of paper for a real scavenger hunt indoors. It’s a fun activity and a way to say “good job!”
Share Some Family Wisdom
Ask others to record videos of their best advice for the young graduate and compile it into a longer video. There are loads of free apps to compile the videos together like iMovie, Splice, Quik, and Magisto. The grad might get some laughs and will be glad to have the video to look back on in the future.
Play Grad Trivia
Another way to jazz up a simple family party might be to play trivia about the graduate or about their favorite subject. Or, if your grad wants to show off, they can ask the trivia questions and you can be the subjects. Winner gets the biggest slice of dessert!
