Immigrants have shaped the history and culture of America. From food to language to business, immigrants have been leaving their mark on the United States for centuries. To honor them, we’re highlighting six inspiring entrepreneurs who immigrated to the U.S. and their incredible stories.

LEVI STRAUSS

p

The father of blue jeans, Levi Strauss, immigrated from Germany to San Francisco in 1847. He soon partnered with tailor Jacob Davis to create workwear, eventually inventing blue jeans. Now, more than a century later, Levi’s is valued at $6.6 billion and blue jeans have changed fashion forever. 2 2

SERGEY BRIN

p

Sergey Brin co-founded one of the most important companies of all time: Google. Brin immigrated from the Soviet Union at the age of six and later went on to earn degrees from the University of Maryland and Stanford. It’s at Stanford that he met fellow future Google co-founder Larry Page. In addition to Google, Brin is also

J U LY 2 0 1 9

the president of Alphabet and is now worth over $101 billion. But despite his successes, Brin says, “The only way you are going to have success is to have lots of failures first.”

PHIL LIBIN

p

Like Brin, Phil Libin also immigrated from the Soviet Union, settling in New York. From a young age, he was interested in technology, inspiring him to create Evernote, an organizational and note taking app. Today, Evernote has over 200 million users. For Libin, success was all about the product itself: “If you have a great product, that’s all you have to do.”

MIKE KREIGER

p

Brazilian-born Mike Kreiger came to the U.S. to study at Stanford. There, he met Kevin Systrom, and they partnered on a new app called Burbn. As the pair worked together, they turned Burbn into an app you may know: Instagram. Instagram would later be purchased by Facebook for over $1 billion. Success for Kreiger came with additional challenges, however, like issues with his visa. But Kreiger succeeded by, in his words, focusing on “the right things instead of a bunch of things.”

PIERRE OMIDYAR

p

Pierre Omidyar was born in Paris and moved to Baltimore to attend university. While in college, he became interested in tech. One of his first projects was to create a website for his wife to sell Pez dispensers she collected. The name of the website? eBay. Later, more collectors used eBay to sell their goods, and today it’s one of the most-visited and successful sites on the Internet.

RASHMI SINHA

p

Rashmi Sinha immigrated to the U.S. from India, and went on to earn a PhD in cognitive neuropsychology from Brown. After graduating, she launched several tech businesses, eventually coming up with Slideshare, which hosts presentations. LinkedIn purchased Slideshare for $118 million in 2012. Like a lot of entrepreneurs, Sinha says it’s important to make mistakes: “I’d rather we make a mistake, realize we did, and try something else instead of spending a lot of time thinking and not acting.”

At the beginning the language was a barrier. When I started, my English was basic and when English-speaking Customers came into the store, I could not provide a good customer service experience. But I always try to solve problems and I prepare myself to do better. How have you overcome those challenges? I enrolled into English classes and now I can provide good service and being bilingual really helps.

Many people are hard to please. Trust and respect are earned, not simply given. How have you overcome those challenges? By making sure I provide a Customer with the same compassion I’d provide my friends or family. Without them, there would be no Wireless Clinic.

What are some of the challenges you’ve faced in running a business in America?

I think the most difficult challenges we face in retail is not knowing what tomorrow may bring. Some days it’s busy and some days it’s very slow.

Finding a good location to open up my business that allowed me to build up my customer base was very difficult when I first started. It remains a challenge today, but with advertising and good customer service I have been able to overcome it and stay open for eight years.

Reopening * * Your Small Business After COVID-19

As restrictions continue to be rolled back across the country, it seems we’re almost set to return to normal. While that is very exciting, it can also be very stressful as we re-enter a drastically different economy postCOVID. Here are some tips to reopening your small business as effectively and efficiently as possible.

Have a Relaunch Plan You’re not just increasing capacity, you’re essentially relaunching your entire business. Think of this as a grand reopening. Take this opportunity to reassess inventory, focusing on your most popular products with the greatest ROI. Have PPE on hand for employees (and train them on how to properly use it). Be prepared to counter any hesitancies your Customers may have about returning to your business.

Reach Out to Your Community Speaking of hesitancies, many Customers aren’t ready to get right back to their old shopping habits. You’ll need your community’s trust in what you’re doing to keep them safe. Reach out via social media, send a survey by email, share flyers or just ask people as they come in. Adopting state guidelines is a start, but engaging your Customers directly to find out what’s important to them establishes

trust and builds loyalty. And don’t be afraid to over-communicate everything. Emphasize the precautions you’re taking, the availability of delivery or curbside options and most of all - the quality products people have been missing.

Consider Partnering Up Everyone is looking for help bouncing back in this post-pandemic economy and leveraging your offerings with another business or influencer could be mutually beneficial. Encourage Customers to tag you on Instagram and share their experience. Locals with large social followings may offer to create fun, authentic content promoting you on their own channels. Consider reaching out to other local businesses that offer products or services that complement yours for a collaborative promotion (e.g. purchasing a phone plan at your location nets the Customer a discount on a phone case next door). The last several months have been a challenging time for everyone, and countless businesses have fought to stay afloat and support their communities through it all. Having a well-crafted plan and effectively showing how you intend to move forward safely can ensure you have a successful reopening.
