CHINA
Celebrations of love are somewhat of a universal tradition, no matter where in the world you are. In China, the Qixi Festival surrounds a tale of Zhinu and Niulang’s forbidden love, symbolized by the stars Vega and Altair, and the Milky Way that divides them. Yet, on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month, the couple is allowed to reunite. During this time, people give flowers and other gifts to their festival sweethearts.
BRAZIL
For Brazil, Valentine’s Day often falls around the same time as Carnival Week, one of the biggest events in the country. Instead, Brazil celebrates its Dia dos Namorados (Lovers’ Day) on June 12th, coinciding with Saint Anthony’s Day on June 13th. Saint Anthony was known for blessing couples with happy and prosperous marriages, and couples often exchange gifts and share a romantic dinner.
FRANCE
France has always had a rich history with traditions of love. An old tradition once celebrated was called loterie d’amour (a drawing for love). Single men and women would crowd into houses that faced one another and men would pick the women they favored until all were paired off. As for the unmatched women, well they would gather at a bonfire and burn pictures of the men who wronged them. The event eventually became so chaotic that the French government banned the tradition! But we still love the idea of finding the perfect match. Regardless of when and where, love evokes passion and acts of celebration all across the world. Whether you’re celebrating Valentine’s Day this February or are looking forward to another tradition this year, we at Ultra wish for you the best and for your love to prosper.
