Repton School remains firmly committed to high standards of dress, smart presentation, and a strong sense of shared identity.
Following staff consultation and a review of dress regulations at comparable large coeducational boarding schools, we have made refinements to our uniform and dress regulations
These changes are intended to clarify expectations, reduce unnecessary complexity, and ensure our approach remains appropriate for a modern educational environment, while preserving what parents value most about Repton
These regulations are intended to promote smartness, consistency and pride in appearance, while recognising pupils’ maturity and preparing Sixth Form pupils for life beyond School. Expectations apply throughout the formal School day unless otherwise specified
A Whole School Approach
Across all year groups: Pupils are expected to take pride in their appearance and to present themselves as ambassadors for Repton School
Uniform and casual clothing may not be mixed during the formal School day
The Senior Management Team and pastoral teams retain discretion in matters of interpretation, particularly where judgement or professionalism is concerned
Adjustments may be made sensitively where required for medical, religious, or pastoral reasons.
The Lower School uniform reflects Repton’s traditional ethos and sets clear expectations of smartness, consistency, and appropriateness for a working academic environment

General expectations (Lower School)
Uniform must be worn correctly and in full during the School day.
Hair should be smart, tidy and not extreme in style or colour.
Jewellery and piercings must be small, discreet and minimal Pupils may wear a single necklace and not more than two piercings in either ear
Make-up, if worn at all, must be subtle and appropriate for School.
Only House scarves are permitted during the School day.
If a coat is to be worn, it should be dark in colour and waterproof From September 2027, the School coat, which will be supplied in the School Shop, should be worn.
The emphasis in the Lower School is on clarity, consistency, and formality, supporting pupils in developing good habits and a shared sense of identity.
In Sixth Form, uniform expectations move from prescription to professional judgement Dress should reflect pupils’ seniority and prepare them for future academic, professional, and civic contexts
Uniform A (Professional Dress)
Suit or tailored combination of a conventional cut and single dark colour (dark blue, dark grey or black)
Shirt or blouse with collar; ties worn where appropriate
Pullovers or a quarter-zip may be worn provided the overall appearance remains smart and business-like
Smart, formal footwear
Socks or dark tights that complement professional attire
Uniform B (Alternative Professional Dress)
Tailored jacket with matching trousers or knee-length skirt
Shirt or blouse with collar (white)

General expectations (Sixth Form)
Sixth Form dress should be professional, not casual.
Hair should be natural in colour, smart and not extreme in style
Jewellery, piercings and make-up should be discreet and appropriate to a professional environment.
Scarves may be worn with greater flexibility than in the Lower School but should remain sensible, plain, and appropriate

Sixth Form pupils are trusted to exercise judgement, but this autonomy is conditional and subject to staff oversight.
The School Shop keeps sample sizes for both School uniform and sports kit for sizing purposes The School Shop is located above Cloisters Café beneath Pears School and can be accessed via the staircase at the entrance to Cloisters.
It is essential that an appointment is arranged with the School Shop if you would like to try on uniform or sports kit

Our School Shop is also where Repton memorabilia can be purchased as well as day-to-day items that pupils may require such as pens, pencils and notepads as well as some essentials like toiletries
Trousers worn by Lower School pupils must be of a woollen or wool-mix fabric, not denim or canvas, and of a conventional style and fit For example, they should not be very low-waisted or cut in a ‘skinny’ style
Trouser fabric should be of a single, dark colour: black, charcoal or dark navy; lighter colours such as light grey or bright blue are not permitted
Belts, if worn, should be plain and of dark leather; prominent buckles are not permitted
Suits must be of woollen material, not linen or corduroy, and of an inconspicuous pattern. Unconventional styles will not be permitted. Fabric should be of a single, dark colour: black, charcoal or dark navy; lighter colours such as light grey or bright blue are not permitted
Sixth Formers may wear waistcoats as part of a matching three-piece suit.
Jackets should be in a blazer or semi-fitted style and of finger-tip length
Shirts and blouses should be white, of non-sheer fabric in a plain style, and long enough to be tucked into the skirt waistband
Lower School pupils are allowed to wear only House scarves. Sixth Formers may alternatively wear plain woollen scarves, in black or navy
Items of CCF uniform should only be worn on parade.
Boys’ faces must be clean-shaven for School
Official School sports kit must be worn for fixtures, including the School tracksuit If permission has been given for pupils to attend academic lessons or other formal activities in sports kit, the tracksuit must also be worn
Lower School skirts must be on the knee or below Sixth Form skirts should be only just above the knee and no longer than mid-calf. These must also be of an appropriate fit, lined, and made in a suitable fabric weight: knitted or stretch fabrics are not appropriate Pupils are not permitted to wear wrap-over styles or skirts with deep slits or decorations such as exposed zips or asymmetric hems.
Uniform B Sixth Form pupils are required to have a suit with a skirt, which must be worn for formal occasions (such as Sunday Chapel and whole-School events)
Trousers may be worn by Sixth Formers as an alternative to skirts during the week (Monday to Saturday). These should be part of a matching suit, tailored and of suitable fabric They must be of an appropriate fit, cut and length: skinny, lowwaisted, cropped or very tight styles are not acceptable, and they must cover the ankle. Socks or hosiery are to be worn with trousers.
Shoes should be of a suitable style and heels should be no higher than 35cm for Lower School pupils and 5cm for Sixth Formers. Stiletto, kitten, wedge heels, and styles with ankle straps are not permitted.
