The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis is a fully professional theatrical operation belonging to the League of Resident Theatres (LORT), the Non-Profit Theatre Collation, Greater St. Louis Inc., and is a constituent member of Theatre Communications Group, Inc., the national service organization for the not-for-profit professional theatre. It operates independently of, but under a mutually beneficial agreement with, Webster University. The Rep operates under an agreement between the League of Resident Theatres and Actors’ Equity Association, the Union of Professional Actors and Stage Managers in the United States. The Rep hires directors and choreographers who are members of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers and stagehands who are members of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees. Scenic artists employed by The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis are members of United Scenic Artists, Local 829, AFL-CIO. The scenic, costume, lighting and sound designers in LORT Theatres are represented by United Scenic Artists Local USA-829, IATSE. Financial assistance for this theatre has been provided in part by the St. Louis Regional Arts Commission; and the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency. This project is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, which believes that a great nation deserves great art.

“I had fallen under some sort of spell of the kind that certain places exude and it drew me, my imaginings, my longings, my curiosity, my whole spirit - towards itself.”

Welcome to The Rep’s first West-End production brought right here to St. Louis! We are so excited to welcome our friends from across the pond with this show, which is filled with terrifyingly creative actor-driven storytelling that reminds me why live theatre is inimitable.

I first saw The Woman in Black as a middle-schooler at a student matinee and vividly remember holding my breath at moments, feeling like there was a force beyond my control up to no good. I was literally on the edge of my seat and remember a camaraderie with the audience around me that comes from a feeling of shared tension. Years later, I am inspired to know that sense is brought on by live ritual storytelling and brilliant writing.

Susan Hill, who wrote The Woman In Black to bring the proper Victorian Ghost story and gothic horror into full-length fiction in the 1980s, captures some kind of conjured magic in this tale. As a textbook “cover my eyes and ears” scary story watcher, Hill’s horror slips in with potency—she allows our imagination to run wild.

The experience of a daring imagination interrupted with a sound, an image, a surprise can be pleasurable or perilous! St. Louis, like me, seems to love Halloween—and the delight the haunting fall brings. So here is to your whole spirit being drawn in as you enter the world of Arthur Kipps and the Eel Marsh House, and I expect that this British treat will encourage you to keep your lights on long after you fall asleep tonight.

DRAWN TO DANGER:

HORROR, FICTION, AND THE HAUNTINGS OF ST. LOUIS

Susan Hill’s The Woman in Black is your classic Gothic horror fiction story: set in a small, isolated location that’s bleak and inescapable, a constant sense of fear and past events impeding on the present drives the characters to an ever-increasing state of madness. Hill’s novel, published in 1983, was heavily influenced by Henry James’ 1898 novella The Turn of the Screw, which has been described by contemporary writers Stephen King (The Shining) and Gillian Flynn (Sharp Objects, Gone Girl) as one of the most chilling ghost stories ever written, notable for its mystery and lingering unanswered questions.

Horror stories have gripped audiences for centuries, starting with monstrous tales from folklore and leading to contemporary horror films and thriller novels. In her essay “Elements of Aversion,” author Elizabeth Barrette linked our fascination with the horror genre to our evolutionary drive for survival:

“We began to feel restless, to feel something missing [in our daily lives]: the excitement of living on the edge, the tension between hunter and hunted. So, we told each other stories through the long, dark nights... The rush of adrenaline feels good. Our hearts pound, our breath quickens, and we can imagine ourselves on the edge... Sometimes a story intends to shock and disgust, but the best horror intends to rattle our cages and shake us out of our complacency. It makes us think, forces us to confront ideas we might rather ignore, and challenges preconceptions of all kinds. Horror reminds us that the world is not always as safe as it seems.”

Certainly, St. Louis audiences are as riveted by horror as any other. Here at The Rep, shows like A Christmas Carol (2021–2022), Feeding Beatrice (2019),

The Mystery of Edwin Drood (2004), and Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992 and 2007) kept us on the edge of our seats, and around the city, ghost stories and haunted locales delight and entertain visitors and locals alike.

Hitchhike Annie

A local St. Louis ghost legend circa the 1940s, Hitchhike Annie was a young girl in a white dress who appeared on Calvary Road between Calvary and Bellefontaine Cemeteries to flag down drivers. The ghost was said to give an address but then vanish from the car before reaching the destination. When drivers arrived at that location and asked about the “girl,” they were told she died in a car accident on Calvary Road years earlier. The legend faded out by the 1980s.

Lemp Mansion and Brewery

This stately home belonged to the family of Adam Lemp, a German immigrant who was one of the first to produce German lager beer in the country. As business became more successful, his son, William J. Lemp, established the Lemp Brewery on Cherokee Street and built a family mansion there as well. However, many members of the family suffered from health issues and depression. The family estate is said to be haunted by the ghosts of the Lemp family, many of whom died by suicide in the house and the neighboring brewery. Today, it is considered one of the most haunted places in the United States and is home to a restaurant and inn that leans into the mansion’s macabre past.

The Exorcist House

In 1949, a family moved from Maryland into a house in Bel-Nor after their 13-year-old son started exhibiting signs of demonic possession, like shaking beds and guttural noises. Jesuit priests from Saint Louis University performed a twelve-week exorcism on the boy at Alexian Brothers Hospital, where he was eventually freed from the demon’s influence. The house continues to be of interest, with people reporting unexplained happenings or strange phenomena around the house. The story of the exorcism inspired William Peter Blatty’s 1971 novel and 1973 film, The Exorcist.

CREATIVES

Susan Hill (Author) Susan Hill was born in Scarborough and educated at grammar schools there and in Coventry and took her English degree at King’s College London. Her best-known books, apart from The Woman in Black, are the novels I’m the King of the Castle, Strange Meeting, and In the Springtime of the Year. Her books have won the Whitbread Fiction Award, the Somerset Maugham Award, and the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize and been shortlisted for the Booker Prize. She has also written non-fiction and children’s books and been a regular reviewer of books for numerous national newspapers, journals, and broadcasts regularly. Her most recent books are a trilogy of crime novels featuring Detective Chief Inspector Simon Serrailler: The Various Haunts of Men, The Pure in Heart, and The Risk of Darkness. The series has been bought for television adaptation. Susan Hill lives in a farmhouse in rural Gloucestershire from where she runs her own small publishing company, Long Barn Books. Of her fiction, Susan Hill writes:

“I was born on the north-east coast of Yorkshire, in the beautiful town of Scarborough, in a snowbound February during the Second World War. There were a good many old ladies living there in those days but there never seemed to be any children near to us, so that I spent a lot of my time on my own. But quite contentedly so. I had imaginary friends and I made up stories about them. As soon as I could, I wrote them down. So there was never a time in my life when I was not a writer. And so it has gone on. At school, between work for O and A levels, I wrote two novels, which were published when I was at university reading English. They were very bad novels, my apprentice work, and they are out of print—but they were the best I could do at the time. It took me some years to find my real voice, and meanwhile, I lived from hand to mouth as a freelance book reviewer, and always, I read, not just the new books, but the things I had grown up with—Dickens, Hardy, the Brontës, everything with atmosphere and a sense of place.” Susan Hill was awarded a CBE in the 2012 Queen’s birthday and diamond jubilee honours. www.susan-hill.com.

Stephen Mallatratt (Playwright) June 15, 1947–November 22, 2004. Stephen wrote his early plays while working as an actor in Alan Ayckbourn’s Scarborough company. Several of these were produced and directed by Ayckbourn at Scarborough, and commissions from other theatres followed. Comic Cuts was written for the contact theatre in Manchester and won the Thames TV Theatre Writers award, and after many regional British productions, culminated ten years later in the West End – retitled as The Glory of the Garden. In addition to original plays he wrote adaptations of books for both TV and theatre – including Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw, and Daphne Du Maurier’s Rebecca. His television work included The Innocents for YTV, and he adapted the Forsyte Saga for Granada The Woman in Black is now in its 30th year at the Fortune Theatre in the West End, and in its ninth year at the Rafael Solaria theatre in Mexico. It has been translated into at least 12 languages and performed at the last count in 41 countries.

Robin Herford (Director) Robin read Philosophy and English at the University of St Andrews and trained as an actor at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

Much of Robin’s early career was involved with Sir Alan Ayckbourn, and the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough, first as an actor, then as Associate Director and finally a stint as Artistic Director. He has appeared in the original production of more Ayckbourn plays than any other actor, including the enormous 16 play two-hander Intimate Exchanges, performing both in Scarborough and the West End. He is often asked to direct Ayckbourn’s plays, and has notched up over 30 productions of them, both in the UK and abroad.

His most successful production started life in Scarborough. The Woman In Black which he commissioned and directed in 1987, has been running in London for over thirty years, and has completed 12 UK tours. Directing, and occasionally performing in this play, has taken him, among other places, to Japan, USA, India, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, and New Zealand. He now directs much more than he acts, varying his choice of play and venue as much as possible. The last two productions he directed were Stray Dogs, a new play about Stalin and the Russian poet Anna Akhmatova at the Park Theatre in London, and a new version of The Woman In Black at McKittrick’s Hotel in New York, where it won Best Revival in the Off-Broadway Alliance Awards.

Page 2 Stage sends Rep volunteers and staff members into community spaces to facilitate discussions about the creation and curation of a season, from play selection to the moment it comes to life on stage. Community members learn about all the different aspects of theatre and interact with props, set models, lighting fixtures, and more. All participants are encouraged to see a production in The Rep’s current season.

WORKSHOPS

Activate The Rep as a resource! We offer storytelling, devised theatre, team building, view points, and movement workshops for corporate, non-profit, and educational groups of all sizes. We tailor our workshops to the needs of our community groups and offer them as one-day experiences or a multi-day workshop series.

REPRESENT STL

This free conversation series takes a creative approach to building community through dialogue and helps us discover the subtle truths that unite our human experience. Throughout the year, The Rep hosts thought-provoking public forums intended to provide a safe space for the free exchange of ideas. This series explores the intersectionality of art and civic life with experts and thought leaders and skillfully discusses the issues that matter most to our community.

community impact

We partner with nonprofits and civic leaders to increase the authenticity of our productions, expand access to world-class storytelling, and provide action steps for inspired audiences to positively affect their communities.

SHUTTLE TO THE REP

In partnership with the St. Louis County Library, we offer discounted tickets to select performances at The Rep and provide shuttle transportation to and from the theatre, with Rep staff on board to talk about the organization and the production.

SLAM TOURS

For select shows of our season, guides at the Saint Louis Art Museum develop a curated tour of the museum of pieces with some connection to themes and ideas presented in our mainstage season. The tours are free to attend and do not require an RSVP, but space is limited.

OCTOBER: A Number by Caryl Churchill

Tuesday, October 14, 2 pm | Zoom (Virtual)

NEW! Tuesday, October 14, 6 pm | LHC Lobby

Wednesday, October 15, 2 pm | The Novel Neighbor

As A Number begins, a son confronts his father with the startling knowledge that he has genetically identical counterparts and is merely one of “a number.” Upon this topical foundation, Churchill shifts gears to engage in a penetrating, timeless inquiry aimed at the intersection of morality, nature versus nurture, and the very substance of love.
