The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis is a fully professional theatrical operation belonging to the League of Resident Theatres (LORT), the Non-Profit Theatre Collation, Greater St. Louis Inc., and is a constituent member of Theatre Communications Group, Inc., the national service organization for the not-for-profit professional theatre. It operates independently of, but under a mutually beneficial agreement with, Webster University. The Rep operates under an agreement between the League of Resident Theatres and Actors’ Equity Association, the Union of Professional Actors and Stage Managers in the United States. The Rep hires directors and choreographers who are members of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers and stagehands who are members of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees. Scenic artists employed by The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis are members of United Scenic Artists, Local 829, AFL-CIO. The scenic, costume, lighting and sound designers in LORT Theatres are represented by United Scenic Artists Local USA-829, IATSE. DIRECTOR'S NOTE

Icons are like trains.

They are powerful, handsome, loud and nostalgic. They shape the landscape. They carry history, memory, and a lot of baggage. And once they start moving, it’s hard to look away.

Johnny Cash is one of those icons.

But what you’re about to see tonight is not a biography of Johnny Cash. It’s not an impression show, we are not trying to recreate the man.

Instead, Ring of Fire is a concert journey through the imagined final moments of Johnny Cash’s mind, heart, and soul—a life flashing, refracting, blazing through memory, music, and myth.

But these moments are not offered as facts and figures. They are offered as music— because music was the language Cash used to understand and commune with the world.

Johnny Cash stepped into characters that were not his own: prisoners, wanderers, saints, sinners, the hopeful and the broken. Through song, he invited audiences into empathy.

Cash understood that the fire that fuels great art can also burn. He lived with enormous passion, and he reckoned with the wreckage it sometimes left behind. But he never hid from it. He turned it into music. That honesty is part of why his work still resonates. Because ultimately this evening is not only about Johnny Cash.

It is about the landscape of America he sang into being—a country as vast and contradictory as its everyday people. A place where heartbreak and hope sit side by side, and where music carries the stories of ordinary lives into something larger than any one man.

If this show is a train, then we are all on it together—artists and audience alike.

Moving through memory.

Through rhythm.

Through the stories we carry.

And maybe, for a moment tonight, the music does what Cash always hoped it could do: bring us together and remind us that we are vividly, undeniably alive.

As Johnny Cash once said, “That’s the great thing about music. You can sing a song to 85,000 people and they’ll sing it back for 85,000 different reasons.”

THE LIFE OF JOHNNY CASH

 February 26, 1932: J.R. Cash is born to Ray and Carrie Rivers Cash in Kingsland, Arkansas.

 July 7, 1950: Following his graduation from Dyess High School, Cash enlists in the U.S. Air Force, taking the name John R. Cash.

 August 7, 1954: Cash marries Vivian Liberto. They have 4 daughters during their 12-year marriage.

 October 17, 1954: Cash and his band, the Tennessee Two, sign a record deal with Sam Phillips at Sun Records, where he becomes “Johnny Cash.”

 July 7, 1956: Backstage during his first performance at the Grand Ole Opry, Cash meets June Carter for the first time.

 July 9, 1958: Cash leaves Sun Records to sign with Columbia Records. The following year, he plays The Ed Sullivan Show

 January 1, 1960: Cash makes his first appearance at San Quentin State Prison. He becomes known for his free prison concerts throughout his career.

 April 19, 1963: The single “Ring of Fire” is released, co-written by Merle Kilgore and Cash’s future wife, June Carter.

 January 13, 1968: Cash plays Folsom State Prison, 13 years after the release of his single, “Folsom Prison Blues.”

 March 1, 1968: Cash marries June Carter. They remain married until her death in 2003.

 June 7, 1969: The Johnny Cash Show premieres. This 58-episode music variety show runs for three seasons on ABC.

 December 6, 1976: Cash premieres the first of several television holiday specials.

 1989: Cash is inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and wins the Grammy Legend Award.

 April 22, 2002: Cash is awarded the National Medal of Arts.

 September 12, 2003: Johnny Cash passes away at the age of 71, four months after the death of his wife, June Carter Cash.

JOHNNY CASH DISCOGRAPHY

Over his nearly 50-year career, Johnny Cash released 130 albums, mostly through his contract with Columbia Records. Below are just a handful of his best-selling records:

 The Fabulous Johnny Cash (1958), featuring “I Still Miss Someone” and “Don’t Take Your Guns to Town.”

 I Walk the Line (1964), featuring new recordings of “I Walk the Line,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” and “Understand Your Man.”

 At Folsom Prison (1968), a live album recorded at Folsom State Prison in California.

 Hello, I’m Johnny Cash (1970), featuring “If I Were a Carpenter” with June Carter Cash.

 Highwayman (1985), a collaboration with Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson.

JOHNNY CASH, VOICE OF THE UNDERDOG

“I speak my mind in a lot of these songs,” Johnny Cash wrote in the linear notes to the album Man in Black (1971). Throughout his long career, Cash was often considered an advocate for the oppressed: outcasts, rebels, working classes, and the poor. Many of his songs reference incarcerated individuals, with his most famous being “Folsom Prison Blues,” released in 1955 and inspired by the 1951 film Inside the Walls of Folsom Prison, which had a profound impact on Cash while he was stationed in West Germany. The song, from the perspective of an incarcerated individual, perpetuated Cash’s well-known outlaw image, though the musician himself was never incarcerated.

Cash continued to revisit themes of crime and punishment in his music, including songs like “San Quentin,” “I Got Stripes,” “Delia’s Gone,” “25 Minutes to Go,” and “Greystone Chapel.” Early in his career, he gave his first prison performance at Huntsville State Prison in Texas in 1957. He would continue to give free prison performances throughout his career, and in 1968, he recorded the live album, At Folsom Prison, which became a sensation and relaunched his career. He followed this with more live recordings at San Quentin State Prison, Österåker Prison in Sweden, and Tennessee State Prison.

In addition to his music, Cash also advocated for prison reform through talks with six U.S. presidents and his testimony at a 1972 Senate Judiciary subcommittee hearing, where he shared stories from incarcerated individuals that he had met during his prison visits.

Elizabeth is the consummate draper. She has amazing gifts in patterning, cutting, and directing the assemblage of (mostly) women’s costumes. Every costume designer who has worked with her learns to lean on her exquisite taste in materials, understructures, and trimmings, as she brings our drawings to three-dimensional life. Beyond her technical expertise, she is an artist at manipulating the flow of fabrics to emphasize movement as it happens and enhance the gesture of the actor. Perhaps her most subtle but visually incredibly important talent is in manipulating the sculptural shapes, the seam placements, and other details to bring out the most flattering line for every actor. Everyone feels beautiful in Elizabeth’s costumes. All of The Rep’s Costume Designers are grateful to for her having made every design we have handed her exceed all expectations and earn us the many compliments that rightly belong to her work. Richard Maltby Jr. (Playwright) cconceived and directed two Tony Award-winning Broadway musicals: Fosse (1999: Tony, Outer Critics Circle, Drama Desk Awards) and Ain’t Misbehavin’ (1978: Tony, New York Drama Critics Circle, Outer Critics Circle, Drama Desk Awards), for which he also won the Tony Award as Best Director. With longtime collaborator, composer David Shire, he directed and wrote lyrics for Starting Here, Starting Now, 1977 (Grammy nomination); Baby, 1983, with librettist Sybille Pearson (nominated for seven Tony Awards); Closer Than Ever, 1989 (Two Outer Critics Circle Awards: Best Off-Broadway Musical, Best Score); and the musical Big, 1996, with librettist John Weidman (Tony Award nomination for Best Score). With the team of Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg, he wrote lyrics for the international hit Miss Saigon (London Evening Standard Award, Best Musical, 1990; Tony Award nomination for Best Score, 1991). Mr. Maltby directed and co-wrote with Don Black the American adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Song & Dance, 1986, which won a Tony Award for its star, Bernadette Peters. He has enjoyed a long association with the Manhattan Theatre Club, where he directed five musicals including the original production of Ain’t Misbehavin’. The son of the well-known orchestra leader, Mr. Maltby also contributes devilish crossword puzzles to Harpers Magazine.

William Meade (Conceiver) conceived and produced the Chicken Soup for the Soul Theater Series along with Chicken Soup for the Soul's Artistic Director Amy Newmark. A Grammy-nominated producer with over one hundred recordings, his credits including Hello, Dolly! starring Carol Channing, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas with Ann Margret, and Elegies written by William Finn and starring Betty Buckley. He has written and produced music for the television shows Sex and the City, Love Monkey, and Royal Pains, the Super Bowl Half Time Show, and The Miss America Pageant. Internationally, he has produced and written music and scripts for the Beijing Olympics, CCTV, VOX and ZDF television. With Johnny

Cash, he conceived and produced the Broadway show Ring of Fire. He wrote a series of educational teen musicals for the South Korean Ministry of Culture which toured schools through out South East Asia. He recently finished the screenplay for the feature movie Invisible Bridges , the play Ordinary Miracles and new adaptation of the classic stage show A Christmas Carol. He is the Executive Producer for the upcoming feature movies Melting Hearts of Stone and The Good Source.

He has also released four critically acclaimed solo albums, appeared on the Grand Ole Opry over 180 times, produced numerous records including an all-star tribute to Johnny Cash, and written hundreds of songs. Kate Bergstrom (Augustin Family Artistic Director) is a seasoned director, culture shaper, and creator, bringing to this position her extensive experience in theatre, opera, and film. Dedicated to enhancing community connectivity, she infuses her dynamic energy and fosters engagement through exceptional storytelling that is both entertaining and impactful.

Kate’s most recent productions at The Rep wowed audiences with the critically acclaimed Ken Ludwig’s Sherwood: The Adventures of Robin Hood in Spring 2025, It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play in December 2023 and The 39 Steps in 2022.

In addition to her time at The Rep, Kate has over ten years of experience directing everything from reimagined classics to new works across the country at Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Trinity Repertory Company, Marin Theatre Company, Ars Nova, Rattlestick Theater, Playwrights Center, Cleveland Play House, Curious Theatre Company, Los Angeles Theatre Center, Opera San Diego, Music Academy of the West, Redcat, LACMA, and more. Her recent world premieres include You Can’t Hide From Yourself (Playwrights Horizons Soundstage), Oh To Be Pure Again (Actor’s Express), and Letters That You Will Not Get (American Opera Projects).

As Festival Director, Kate led, produced, and programmed the Big Eddy Film Festival, a cinematic celebration of counter-current narratives that crosses the intersection of art, film, and rural imagination in upstate New York. This experience from her tenure as Founder and Producing Artistic Director of On The Verge, a company staging and producing world premieres and workshops that sparked conversation, community, and celebration at the crossroads of Santa Barbara and beyond.

Most recently Kate has worked with dozens of large corporate clients such as Google, Genetech, and Cisco, co-leading multi-day programs and longterm adviserships in executive communication and leadership as a performance coach at Stand & Deliver. Kate holds an MFA in directing from Brown University and a BA in Directing and Acting from UCLA. She lives in Lafayette Square with her husband, Mike, and son, Otto, and the family pup, Crispy.

Danny Williams (Managing Director) An experienced arts administrator, Danny Williams was named The Rep’s Managing Director in January 2022. Danny brings to this position expertise in nonprofit accounting, senior management, and organizational development.

Prior to joining The Rep, Danny worked at The Public Theater in New York, where he served in various roles from 2006 to 2021. In his final role at The Public as Senior Director, Finance and Administration, he managed the daily and strategic financial operations of the $50 million nonprofit organization, successfully launched an organization-wide intranet, partnered with the development team to achieve fundraising goals, and collaborated on long-term financial planning and analysis, including cash investment strategies, budget analysis, and project management. Noteworthy and favorite productions Danny worked on at The Public include Broadway: Fun Home, Eclipsed, Hamilton, and Hair; Off-Broadway: Here Lies Love, Into the Woods, Twelfth Night, As You Like It, White Noise, and Rock Bottom.

Danny serves on the National Planning Committee for The Professional Non-Profit Theatre Coalition, working to promote lasting governmental partnership to support arts education, and workforce development and infrastructure needs in theatres across the country. He has also participated in panels at national conferences for Theatre Communications Group (TCG), the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), and Tessitura Network. He also is on the board of INTAR Theatre, committed to the development and continuation of the Latine voice in American theatre and beyond.

Before working in arts administration, Danny had a career as a performer and was notably featured in the 2002 Westport Country Playhouse preBroadway production of Our Town starring Academy Award winner, Paul Newman. He also performed extensively as an improvisor at various venues in New York. Williams directed several NY Fringe Festival productions including Gated and Yellow Brick Wall, both written by Marisa Marquez. From 2017–2019, Danny was an Executive Producer with the Warren Miller Performing Arts Center (WMPAC) in Big Sky, Montana. At WMPAC he produced productions of Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale, directed by Laura Savia; the world premiere production of Levity by Stephanie DiMaggio, directed by Stella Powell-Jones; The Last Five Years directed by Jason McDowell-Green; and [title of show] directed by Danny Sharron.

Williams also held roles with Musical Theatre International and Manhattan Theatre Club and served as an adjunct professor in the performing arts management Master of Fine Arts program at Brooklyn College. He holds degrees in marketing and theater from Fairfield University and spent a semester studying at Regents University in the United Kingdom.

CAMP REP

Camp Rep began as a manifestation of The Rep’s unwavering commitment to lifelong learning and the goal to foster a theatre-loving space for youth year-round. Starting in 2020 as a half-day venture, it swiftly evolved into a full-day camp by its second year. Camp Rep has grown not only in increased attendance, but it has also offered a wider array of workshops encompassing acting, dance, music, stage combat, filmmaking, costume and prop design, stage management, and directing. Campers create their own performances and learn about the magic of theatre and technology behind the scenes, culminating in a final showcase for friends and family.

LIFELONG LEARNER MATINEES

More than 3,000 intergenerational learners attend Lifelong Learner Matinees at The Rep each season. These matinees are typically designed for sixth–grade students and older, but we welcome learners of all ages, encouraging a diverse audience that includes all those who value continuing education through the arts.

2 PM–3 PM | The Novel Neighbor Amanda Wingfield is a faded remnant of Southern gentility who now lives in a dingy St. Louis apartment with her son, Tom, and her daughter, Laura, who has a physical handicap and debilitating shyness. The father has left home, so Tom supports his mother and sister with a shoe-factory job he finds unbearable. When Amanda convinces Tom to bring home from his workplace a “gentleman caller” for Laura, the illusions that Tom, Amanda, and Laura have each created in order to make life bearable collapse about them.
