2026 marks my first full year as Landscape Structures® President and CEO, but I began my career here 25 years ago. I knew this was the place for me the minute I met our founders, Barb and Steve King. Their genuine passion for play innovation play that’s life-changing for all kids — was woven throughout the company and continues to be felt to this day.

In my time here, I’ve been involved in every part of our business and I know what makes us special: our collective passion for play and deep focus on innovation. Now, as only the third president in our company’s more than fifty-year history, I’m excited to continue the success of the leaders before me by amplifying what makes us amazing.

I often reflect on the fact that I met my closest friends on the playground in elementary school. What a privilege it is to be part of creating the play spaces where those important relationships and memories form. Every day adds a new page in our company’s history. At Landscape Structures,® we’re experts in designing play. And good design is only possible when color is considered early on in the process. It can’t be an afterthought. Because color is so much more than an aesthetic choice. It’s a form of communication.

Humans make intuitive decisions based on color and shape in less than three seconds, and we strive to make playgrounds that act as an invitation from that very first glance. That’s why we’re deeply committed to creating the colors that help our playstructures speak the language of play to all kids.

Color matters

Research continues to show that color impacts emotions, behavior and cognitive development. For kids, color helps them decide if a playground is fun based on sight alone. And when we design, we want to give kids credit for their developing tastes and preferences for color.

We create colors that honor a child’s needs and communicate the intent of different activities at a playground. For younger children, we emphasize primary colors, while more sophisticated palettes are appropriate for older kids. We also use different tones to help spark energy on highly active play events or create a sense of calm in places of rest. And finally, we consider sensory stimulation by including palpable textures and matte or gloss finishes that create more visual and tactile variation.

Science + nature

While we could simply select trending colors from the pages of a catalog, we have invested heavily in creating proprietary colors that we thoughtfully group into palettes. First, we draw on research, then take cues from nature, and finally tweak and craft the color, texture and finish until it’s ready for the play setting. We focus on subtlety, not colors that shout at the viewer. And even our most vibrant colors are sophisticated and balanced. Our goal is to use color to create a cognitively appropriate, exciting and beautiful play environment for all children.

Our proprietary colors are as beautiful and purposeful as they are reliable. Through rigorous testing, we work to ensure our colors can withstand all the wear and tear that happens on a playground for years to come.

Here are some considerations to help you get started.

Ages

Consider the ages you’re trying to draw to your equipment. Younger children (in the 6- to 23-months and 2- to 5-years groups) are more drawn to primary colors. Older children (5 to 12 years) gravitate toward more complex and sophisticated hues. Choosing the right color for the age level will help communicate the age level of the equipment, even from afar.

Activities

The cost of inspection and maintenance shall be considered and incorporated into the budget at the time of design, purchase of equipment and installation (11.1.1 Budgeting).

100-Year Limited Warranty On all PlayBooster® and PlayShaper® aluminum posts, stainless steel fasteners, clamps, beams and caps against structural failure due to corrosion/natural deterioration or manufacturing defects, and on PlayBooster steel posts against structural failure due to material or manufacturing defects.

15-Year Limited Warranty On all Evos® and Weevos® steel arches, all plastic components (including TuffTimbers™ edging), all aluminum and steel components not covered above, Mobius® climbers, Rhapsody® Outdoor Musical Instruments, decks and TenderTuff™ coatings (except Wiggle Ladders, Chain Ladders and Swing Chain) against structural failure due to material or manufacturing defects.

10-Year Limited Warranty On concrete products against structural failure due to natural deterioration or manufacturing defects. Does not cover minor chips, flaking, hairline cracks or efflorescence.

8-Year Limited Warranty On Aeronet® climbers and climbing cables against defects in materials or manufacturing defects.

5-Year Limited Warranty On Rhapsody® cables and mallets against defects in materials or manufacturing defects and on polycarbonate panels against defects in materials or manufacturing defects.

3-Year Limited Warranty On all other parts, i.e., all swing seats and hangers, all swing chain and cables, ZipKrooz® cables, Track Ride trolleys and bumpers, Mobius Climber handholds, Wiggle Ladders, Chain Ladders, all moving equipment, belting material, HealthBeat® resistance mechanisms, Seesaws, etc., against failure due to corrosion/ natural deterioration or manufacturing defects.

The environment near a saltwater coast can be extremely corrosive. Some corrosion and/or deterioration is considered “normal wear” in this environment. Product installed within 500 yards (457 meters) of a saltwater shoreline will only be covered for half the period of the standard product warranty, up to a maximum of five years, for defects caused by corrosion. Products installed in direct contact with saltwater or that are subjected to salt spray are not covered by the standard warranty for any defects caused by corrosion.

This warranty does not include any cosmetic issues, wear and tear from normal use of the product, or misuse or abuse of the product. This warranty does not cover damage or failure resulting from natural disasters, including but not limited to flooding, fire, earthquake, hurricane, or other catastrophic events. This warranty is valid only if the playstructures and/or equipment are erected to conform with Manufacturer’s installation instructions and maintained according to the maintenance procedures furnished by Manufacturer.
