Officials, parents urge DeKalb Schools to fix overcrowding
ST 20
dyanabagby@reporternewspapers.net
Overcrowding at several DeKalb County schools in Dunwoody continues to anger some parents and frustrate city officials as they watch more portable classrooms, or trailers, being planted on campus grounds to house students and teachers no longer able to fit into the main school buildings. DeKalb County School District officials say they are handling the overcrowding, which is focused in the northern area of

the county, as best as they can with funding from education special local option sales tax dollars, or ESPLOST. Adding trailers is currently the most cost-effective and efficient way, according to district administrators. But construction costs are increasing significantly in the current economy, they say, and not all projects originally planned can be funded by the approximately $561 million ESPLOST approved by voters in 2016. District officials say ESPLOST projects are estimated to cost $95 million more than the See OFFICIALS on page 14
The mayoral race became competitive as City Councilmember Lynn Deutsch announced she is running for the seat, saying she is “ready to serve Dunwoody in a new capacity to build on our strengths and tackle our challenges.” And community activist Joe Seconder has announced a run for the council seat Deustch will leave. “I’m ready to get to work to share my vision for Dunwoody but most importantly to hear what residents want,” Deutsch said in an interview. “I have my priorities but I’m excited to spend the [coming] weeks before the election meeting with everyone and hearing their ideas, too.” Councilmember Terry Nall, who has served eight years on the City Council, announced his bid for mayor in February, saying at the time the city needed “strong leadership” to face coming challenges. “A healthy democracy means giving voters a choice,” Nall said after Deutsch’s announcement. “I look forward to a spirited campaign for a better Dunwoody.” Incumbent Denis Shortal declined to seek reelection, saying during his State of the City address in April that he wanted to spend more time with his family. Deutsch was elected to the City Council Post 5, District 2 At Large seat in 2011 and was reelected in 2015 with no opposition. See DEUTSCH on page 22
